Dutch shipping company Eemswerken (Werkendam) has concluded its service contracts with Radio Holland Netherlands, covering its entire fleet of cargo vessels.Radio Holland Netherlands was founded in 1916 by a number of leading Dutch shipping companies with the purpose of installing, maintaining and operating maritime radio stations.The service contracts include the SOLAS annual surveys, special regional service rates and on-demand services of the Navigation and Communication equipment on board, around the world. And we have the technology to deliver gigabytes of data to shore without paying for a helicopter or a mid-ocean drop off of hard drives or DVDs. So, what’s next? Fincantieri has delivered today at its shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia the first two units part of the supply contract of four Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV), to the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG), through the upgrading and conversion of the Minerva class corvettes, decommissioned by the Italian Navy. These are the Minerva and Sibilla vessels, renamed Syed Nazrul and Tajuddin, which have been retired from the national fleet in May 2015 and shortly after arrived at Fincantieri’s dock in Genova, where the upgrading and conversion activities started.

DNV GL has honoured three engineers for their scientific research with the DNV GL Award for Young Professionals. Presented by DNV GL – Maritime CEO Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen at the Posidonia trade fair, the award is designed to find innovative ideas for increasing safety, efficiency and sustainability in shipping. Danelec Marine informs it has supplied new-generation Voyage Data Recorders (VDRs) for three U.K. Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Bay-Class Landing Ship Dock (LSD) vessels. The three ships, RFA Lyme Bay, RFA Mounts Bay and RFA Cardigan Bay, have been fitted with Danelec DM100 VDRs, replacing the existing VDRs which are no longer supported by the manufacturer. The type-approved Danelec DM100s bring the ships into compliance with the new IMO performance standards, which came into force in 2014.

AVEVA has released new enhancements to its AVEVA Bocad product range for structural steel detailing software. AVEVA Bocad features a plate and bar nesting capability for more efficient planning and use of materials, the developer said. An enhanced weld numbering and traceability feature provides efficient increased fabrication efficiency, design quality assurance and improved structural integrity maintenance. In addition, elements of AVEVA Bocad can now be brought into AVEVA Marine production tools to fabricate detailed ship and offshore designs.

Fincantieri has been awarded the contract with the Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) for the supply of four Italian Navy “Minerva” class corvettes to be upgraded and converted into Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), and to provide the related logistics support services. These units, which will be decommissioned by the Italian Navy and replaced by the new vessels covered by the fleet renewal program, have been remised by the Italian Navy through a reselling contract executed by the Central Unit for Naval Armament and Fincantieri. The last lowering of the flag of the first couple of vessels "Minerva" and "Sibilla" was held last 14 May in Augusta. Fincantieri has signed an agreement for the acquisition of a minority stake via capital injection in Camper & Nicholsons International (Camper & Nicholsons), the world leading authority in all luxury yachting activities. The agreement includes the possibility for Fincantieri to increase subsequently its share capital in Camper & Nicholsons. Canadian companies can get into the business of scrapping and recycling ships that have outweighed their useful life, reports Financial Post. When the life span is over, the ships are being sold to the countries that specialize in shipbreaking, such as Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan and Turkey. This has been happening for the past few decades. When they scrap the ships, firms in these countries recover huge quantities of steel. Transport Canada says that some ships in the country are not even worth towing overseas: dock yards and shore lines across Canada are increasingly littered with abandoned, discarded ships. ABB has signed an extensive service agreement with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCC) to increase cost efficiency and predictability of maintenance costs. The agreement spans 15 years and encompasses six vessels under RCC’s brands Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean International. The financial value of the service agreement is in excess of $50 million. The agreement covers four Solstice and two Oasis class vessels and includes an option to extend the agreement to additional existing vessels, vessels that are currently under construction and future newbuilds.
