ExxonMobil Talks With Teekay Ahead of IMO 2020
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has mandated a global 0.50% cap on the maximum level of sulphur in marine fuel. This new cap represents a significant reduction – down from the current 3.50% limit – and presents the marine industry with compliance challenges.Starting from January 1, 2020, vessel operators will need to use a compliant fuel, or have a scrubber fitted if they wish to continue burning high-sulphur fuel oil. This ruling does not affect Emission Control Areas (ECAs), where a 0.10% sulphur fuel is still required.ExxonMobil anticipates that the vast majority of the industry will choose a low-sulphur fuel to meet the new IMO 2020 cap. ExxonMobil has announced its new 40BN cylinder oil, Mobilgard 540, will be available from September 2, 2019. The lubricant has been specifically formulated for use with 0.50% sulphur fuels that comply with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2020 emission regulations and meets the requirements of OEMs, MAN ES and WinGD.Mobilgard 540 will be available from launch in major ports around the world including Hong Kong, Singapore, Antwerp, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Maersk Fluid Technology (MFT) has reported a recent influx of orders for its SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board (BOB) system as confirmation of industry demand for technological solutions that enable ship operators to blend fit-for-purpose cylinder lubricant compositions on board their vessels that match actual engine operating conditions and fuel sulphur levels. Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has appointed Shell Marine to provide its integrated marine solutions, which include lubricants and services for OOCL Hong Kong. OOCL Hong Kong, currently plying routes between Asia and Europe, is the latest vessel to claim the title of ‘world’s largest containership’, with a capacity of 21,413 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), measuring 400m in length and 59m in width. The ship is equipped with MAN Diesel & Turbo’s (MDT) G-type engines that represent the latest in two-stroke engine technology.
Big Win for Maersk Fluid Technology’s BOB System
In the second half of 2015, Maersk Fluid Technology introduced a new version of its cylinder oil ‘Blending-On-Board’ (BOB) system, targeting medium-sized 2-stroke propulsion engines with a cylinder bore between 420 and 680 mm. Now the first volume order has been placed for retrofit of the SEA-Mate B1000 system onto 12 tankers delivered to Maersk Tankers between 2005 and 2008 – ten vessels equipped with Wärtsilä (WinGD) RTA and RT-Flex engines with a bore between 580 and 620 mm and two vessels with engines designed by MAN Diesel & Turbo.
Shell Marine Launches New Cylinder Oil
Shell Marine has launched a new two-stroke engine cylinder oil, Shell Alexia 140, now available from the ports of Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Antwerp, Tanjung Pelepas, Busan and Salalah. The launch follows receipt of a No Objection Letter (NOL) for commercial use of Shell Alexia 140 from MAN Diesel & Turbo and coincides with Shell Alexia 140’s acceptance into full scale operations by two major customers. In September 2016, Shell Marine disclosed Alexia 140’s selection as the first test oil for ‘ACOM’ - MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Automated Cylinder Oil Mixing process.

Shell Marine has shared an insight into the approach driving its work to protect modern ultra-efficient diesel engines against cold corrosion while still optimizing cylinder oil feed rates, across the entire range of vessel operating conditions. The company said it has been working closely with major OEMs and several ship owners who support this development. Maersk Fluid Technology (MFT) said it has recently upgraded its SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board Value Calculator to include a mobile optimized version that will assist in calculating savings, based on a variety of real life scenarios. The SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board (BOB) system enables the crew on board the vessel to blend an engine-specific fit-for-purpose cylinder lubricant with the optimal neutralization and detergent properties. The in-use two-stroke engine system oil is blended with a high-BN cylinder oil.
