Shell Marine Launches New Cylinder Oil
Shell Marine has launched a new two-stroke engine cylinder oil, Shell Alexia 140, now available from the ports of Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Antwerp, Tanjung Pelepas, Busan and Salalah. The launch follows receipt of a No Objection Letter (NOL) for commercial use of Shell Alexia 140 from MAN Diesel & Turbo and coincides with Shell Alexia 140’s acceptance into full scale operations by two major customers. In September 2016, Shell Marine disclosed Alexia 140’s selection as the first test oil for ‘ACOM’ - MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Automated Cylinder Oil Mixing process.

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has appointed Shell Marine to provide its integrated marine solutions, which include lubricants and services for OOCL Hong Kong. OOCL Hong Kong, currently plying routes between Asia and Europe, is the latest vessel to claim the title of ‘world’s largest containership’, with a capacity of 21,413 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), measuring 400m in length and 59m in width. Maersk Fluid Technology Sees SEA-Mate Order Influx
Maersk Fluid Technology (MFT) has reported a recent influx of orders for its SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board (BOB) system as confirmation of industry demand for technological solutions that enable ship operators to blend fit-for-purpose cylinder lubricant compositions on board their vessels that match actual engine operating conditions and fuel sulphur levels. The use of this type of technology can reduce cylinder oil consumption and alleviate issues such as cold corrosion and excessive cylinder wear, according to MFT.

Maersk Fluid Technology Upgrades SEA-Mate
Maersk Fluid Technology (MFT) said it has recently upgraded its SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board Value Calculator to include a mobile optimized version that will assist in calculating savings, based on a variety of real life scenarios. The SEA-Mate Blending-on-Board (BOB) system enables the crew on board the vessel to blend an engine-specific fit-for-purpose cylinder lubricant with the optimal neutralization and detergent properties. The in-use two-stroke engine system oil is blended with a high-BN cylinder oil.
New Cylinder Lubricant: Shell Alexia 140
Shell Marine has shared an insight into the approach driving its work to protect modern ultra-efficient diesel engines against cold corrosion while still optimizing cylinder oil feed rates, across the entire range of vessel operating conditions. Big Win for Maersk Fluid Technology’s BOB System
In the second half of 2015, Maersk Fluid Technology introduced a new version of its cylinder oil ‘Blending-On-Board’ (BOB) system, targeting medium-sized 2-stroke propulsion engines with a cylinder bore between 420 and 680 mm. Now the first volume order has been placed for retrofit of the SEA-Mate B1000 system onto 12 tankers delivered to Maersk Tankers between 2005 and 2008 – ten vessels equipped with Wärtsilä (WinGD) RTA and RT-Flex engines with a bore between 580 and 620 mm and two vessels with engines designed by MAN Diesel & Turbo.

ExxonMobil: 5 Tips on Switching Fuels in ECAs
ExxonMobil has compiled five ‘top-tips’ to help vessel operators effectively switch fuels when entering and exiting Emission Control Areas (ECAs) without introducing maintenance issues. ExxonMobil highlights that switching fuels at correct time is key to meeting 0.10% sulphur requirement. Maersk to Address ‘Blending-On-Board’

UASC, Lukoil Enter Lubes Supply Deal
Container shipping line United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) and the Dubai-based marine lubricant specialist Lukoil have signed a lubricant supply agreement covering vessels from UASC’s advanced newbuilding program. UASC is currently implementing a newbuilding program that includes 17 new vessels on order; six x 18,800 TEU and 11 x 15,000 TEU containerships. Chevron Cylinder Oil Gains NOL from Wärtsilä
Chevron Marine Lubricants’ 100BN cylinder oil, Taro Special HT 100 has received approval for its use in another engine range – products made by Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. (formerly Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd.). Following the completion of a 4,000-hour shipboard testing program on a Wärtsilä 8RT-flex82T engine conducted by Chevron and reviewed by the OEM, as well as and analysis of the engine and samples of the lubricating oil, Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd has now issued a full No Objection Letter (NOL) covering the use of the lubricant, Chevron announced today. The approval allows the use of Taro Special HT 100 oil in Wärtsilä RTA, RT-flex and W-X engines as well as in Sulzer two-stroke engines operating on fuels with sulphur contents in the range of 2 to 3.5 percent on a continuous basis.
LUKOIL Marine Lubricants Launches iCOlube in the UK
To optimize vessel’s engine performance and efficiency, LUKOIL Marine Lubricants has developed the iCOlube system, which had its U.K. official launch on September 8, 2015 in London. According to LUKOIL, the iCOlube cylinder oil lubrication unit tailors the alkalinity reserve to engine load and fuel. The feed rate always stays at optimum level, while only the fuel sulphur content needs to be entered. This way, it maintains better engine conditions, reduces oil costs, saves fuel and is environmentally friendly, the manufacturer said.
ExxonMobil Helps Extend Ship’s Piston Ring Life
Athens-based Costamare Shipping has more than tripled the piston ring replacement period to more than 55,000 hours for containership Cosco Yantian, helping the company reduce costs and improve vessel performance. According to ExxonMobil, the life extension was achieved by switching the container vessel to its Mobilgard 570 cylinder oil in combination with the MobilGard Cylinder Condition Monitoring (CCM) program. The expected piston overhaul interval for the Cosco Yantian’s MAN Diesel & Turbo 12K98MC MK7 engine was 16,000 hours of unmonitored operation. Following a consultation with ExxonMobil’s Field Engineers, it was suggested that the vessel operator introduce Mobilgard 570 and the MobilGard CCM program.
Maersk's Blend-on-Board Project to Market Soon
The Danish shipping giant Maersk has decided to commercialise its new tech invention - SEA-Mate Blend-on-Board - developed by the subsidiary Maersk Fluid Technologies (MFT), says Denmark's post. The new technology recycles motor oil and has saved Maersk 110 million kroner every year in operating costs since its inception. "By recycling the lubricating oil and blending cylinder oil on-board the vessels, we secure large savings for 2-stroke engines in the container, tanker and bulk market. Our expectations are high for the marine market," says a statement from the company.
