We visited Grand Bahama Shipyard CEO Dave Skentelbery, who updates us on his shipyard and the cruise shipping industry.How do you see the market today?In terms of the cruise ship market, it is very healthy. As a business, we are growing the amount of work we do on each of those projects. We’re doing more complex scopes of work. I think we’re truly demonstrating our capability as a project management company to the cruise lines.How do you evolve to more complex jobs?It’s investment in people and facilities.

Cammell Laird: Navy Deal Saves Jobs

Cammell Laird, under threat of losing a key $500 million deal with U.S. cruise ship firm Luxus, said it had won a U.K. Navy contract, helping safeguard 150 jobs at the group. "The work will generate employment security throughout the period (82 days) for some 150 personnel," Cammell Laird Holdings Plc said in a statement. The contract to repair the Fort George ship at Tyneside, northeast England, is worth just under $7.17 million. "It's certainly nowhere near the size of the Luxus contract, but it shows the market that we're out there fighting and winning work," Cammell Laird Managing Director Dave Skentelbery said. A&P wins Conversion Contract

A&P Tyne Ltd, part of UK’s A&P Group, was awarded the first phase of a multi-million dollar conversion contract involving the 14,793 grt Dock Express 20 by De Beers Marine (Pty) Ltd of South Africa. This 1983-built ship will arrive at the yard during August this year (2005) and remain for up to 11 months. On completion of the project the vessel will return to South African waters for the finishing touches to enable her to operate as a fully equipped diamond-mining vessel. A&P Tyne to Convert Ferry

A&P Tyne Limited has signed a contract with Mercy Ships Limited to convert a former Danish rail ferry now named Africa Mercy to a hospital ship for service in Africa. The conversion will take place over an 18-month period and will include the upgrading of the existing vessel, to carry some 400 persons and a hospital facility with 6 operating theatres; 78 hospital beds and an intensive care unit. Dave Skentelbery, Managing Director Shipcare & Projects for A&P said "this is a particularly demanding project and follows on from our recent success with the !Gariep for De Beers. Most importantly it opens up a new market for us in the sphere of passenger ship conversions that is in line with our strategy.
