New E-learning Course for Migrant Sea Rescue

UK-based charity Human Rights at Sea (HRAS) announced its cooperation with maritime training provider Marlins on the development and endorsement of a new e-learning course addressing the rescuing of migrants at sea. The new course, entitled Humanitarian Response, aims to provide learners with an understanding of the reasons why migrants and refugees choose a sea route, suggestions for planning and preparing ship and crew for possible involvement in large scale rescue operations and guidelines and suggestions for vessels involved in the rescue of large numbers of migrants or refugees at sea.

'Mass Casualties' Unless Thailand Meets Migrant Obligations

Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia should fulfil their obligations under international maritime law by rescuing thousands of migrants adrift at sea and avoiding "mass casualties", shipping experts said on Friday. landing, despite a request by the United Nations to rescue them. "We will have mass casualties on our hands if there is not an immediate and concerted search-and-rescue operation by countries in the region," said David Hammond, a maritime law expert and founder of charity Human Rights At Sea. The migrants have been at sea in rickety boats for weeks with little water and food following a crackdown by the Thai government on human trafficking.

Tundra Incorporates Security Management System

Tundra Maritime Defense Services (MDS) has completed Stage 1 of the ISO/PAS 28007 process in collaboration with Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA). Already SAMI Stage 1 and ISO 9001 certified, Tundra MDS have now incorporated a Security Management System (SMS) which they say allows them to demonstrate their reliability and professionalism to potential customers measured against a consistent and highly-demanding International Standard. Tundra said it is now on track to becoming one of the first PMSC’s to obtain ISO/PAS 28007:2012 certification.

Crowley Appointed as VP at Inland Marine

Inland Marine Service, Hebron, KY has announced the appointment of Captain A. Steven Crowley as Vice President of Operations, where he will oversee management on all line haul boats and harbor boats. Crowley has been the director of Inland Training at the Seaman’s Church Institute for the last several years. Prior to joining Seaman’s Church, he held various staff positions at Ingram Barge Company including assistant vice president of operations, marine superintendent and manager of dry cargo operations. Steve will join the existing management team of Richard Maynard, vice president, Tim Gambrel, operations manager and David Hammond, Sr., executive vice president.
