MSC Observes National Maritime Day

More than 200 guests attended Military Sealift Command's annual National Maritime Day ceremony at Willard Park on the Anacostia River at the historic Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., to honor some unsung heroes of our nation's defense -- America's merchant mariners. Vice Adm. David L. Brewer III, USN, commander, MSC, hosted the ceremony that was attended by former Maryland congresswoman Helen Bentley as well as current and former members of the maritime service and military.

Industry Leaders Elected To ABS Membership

Sixty-Nine prominent shipping industry executives have been elected as new members of ABS. In addition, Rear Admiral David L. Brewer III, Commander, Military Sealift Command, U.S. Navy, was appointed as a member. This brings the ABS worldwide membership to 803. The members, each eminent in their maritime field of endeavor, provide broad governance and oversight of ABS. MSC Celebrates Mariner Heroes

The Navy's Military Sealift Command will commemorate the Merchant Marine heroes of yesterday and today at a 2:30 p.m. Maritime Day ceremony May 22 at Pier One East on the historic Washington Navy Yard. Rear Adm. David L. Brewer III, USN, commander, MSC, will host the event, and MSC fleet ocean tug USNS Mohawk will be pierside, serving as the backdrop for the ceremony. Mohawk is one of about 110 ships operating daily around the world supporting MSC's mission as the ocean transportation provider for the Department of Defense. All MSC ships are crewed by merchant mariners, and MSC is the world's largest employer of the U.S. mariners with more than 3,000 civil service mariners serving on MSC ships and nearly 2,000 mariners crewing ships under contract to MSC.

MSC Welcomes Newest Ship

MSC Activates Ship Status Hotline

Military Sealift Command is now providing a toll free number that will provide information regarding MSC and government owned or chartered ship. Concerned family members of mariners can now check on a ship’s status and general location. Family members of mariners who dial (888) SEA-LIFT (732-5438) and press 2 will be put in contact with a MSC employee who can tell them in general terms where the ship is operating and its general status. “Our mariners’ families are part of the MSC family too,” said Vice Admiral David L. Brewer III, commander of MSC. This hotline was available during the first Persian Gulf War. Vice Adm. Brewer said he hopes that it can be used along with other forms of communication to keep family members informed. world.
