Massport Board Appoints New CEO
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) picked its port director, Lisa Wieland, to be its next Chief Executive Officer(CEO), bypassing the other finalist, a member of the city's power elite, for one of the most influential public-sector jobs in the state.Board of Directors voted to offer Wieland the position of CEO and Executive Director for a five-year term. Contract negotiations will occur at a later date.The search firm Isaacson, Miller sought a diverse candidate pool for the position and more than 100 applications were received.
SMT Shipping, CSL Rolls out Joint Venture
SMT Shipping and The CSL Group announced they have entered into an agreement for CSL to acquire 50% of Eureka Shipping, SMT's pneumatic cement vessel business. The new joint venture will allow Eureka and CSL to combine expertise, resources and innovative technologies to expand services to customers in the seaborne cement powder and fly ash transportation markets around the world. WFW Advises Berenberg on Shipping Loan
International law firm Watson Farley & Williams (WFW) has advised private bank Berenberg on its acquisition, jointly with a Japanese financial institution, of a circa US$460m performing shipping loan portfolio from the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). WFW previously advised Berenberg on the acquisition of a similar US$300m portfolio from RBS in February 2017. Hamburg-based international investment and private bank Berenberg was founded in 1590 and is the world’s oldest merchant bank and the world’s second oldest bank overall.
New Leadership at Alphatron Marine
Alphatron Marine announced that Arno Metzemakers will join the company's management team as General Manager responsible for all operational matters worldwide, effective June 1. Next to Metzemakers, Karin Hoogendam will be appointed as COO. Together with Wil Walhain (CFO), they will be the day-to-day management of the Alphatron Marine Group. Luuk Vroombout will maintain responsibility as President CEO and will remain member of the Executive Board together with Dick Slingerland.
Venture Insurance Programs Acquires Tidal Solutions
Venture will rebrand and integrate Tidal Solutions specialty commercial marine products into its portfolio of industry leading programs. Venture Insurance Programs, a national insurance program administrator, today announced it has acquired Tidal Solutions, LLC, a Charlotte, NC-based managing general underwriter serving the North American specialty commercial marine market. Venture will integrate the Tidal Solutions marine products into its portfolio of industry specific insurance programs.
Noreco CEO Quits
Norwegian Energy Company ASA (Noreco) announces that Tommy Sundt is stepping down as CEO of Noreco ASA. Since joining Noreco in September 2014, Tommy Sundt has played a very important role during the financial and corporate restructuring of the Company. Whilst Mr. Sundt’s role as CEO for the Noreco group will cease with effect from this announcement, Mr. Sundt will continue to fill the role as general manager for the Norwegian operations until the end of 2015. Mr. Sundt’s departure has been agreed with the Board and Mr. Sundt will receive severance payment in accordance with his contract.
Questions Linger About Ill-Fated S.Korea Ferry's Owners
The company that owned the South Korean ferry which sank last week, killing possibly hundreds of people, sprang out of a shipping to cosmetics empire founded by a businessman who was jailed for fraud and then went bankrupt. The founder of the predecessor company, Yoo Byung-un, once likened his 1997 bankruptcy proceedings to a captain going down with his ship. An investment vehicle run by his two sons and its shipbuilding affiliate are now the majority owners of Chonghaejin Marine Co. Ltd, the operator of the ferry that capsized.
Calecore Appoints Geotechnical Division GM
Calecore announced the appointment of Mike Southall who commenced employment with the company in June 2013 as General Manager, Calegeo. Mike is a chartered engineer and geologist with nearly 30 years experience as a practicing geotechnical engineer and was previously General Manager for SEtech Ltd. OCS Safety Board Report Next Steps on Reforms
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that a team led by senior officials in the Department of the Interior, including Interior’s Inspector General, have completed a review of offshore oil and gas oversight and regulation and have delivered a set of recommendations that reinforce and expand on ongoing reforms being carried out by Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation, and Enforcement (BOEMRE) Director Michael R. Bromwich. The report of the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Safety Oversight Board, which Secretary Salazar established immediately following the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig, provides recommendations to strengthen permitting, inspections, enforcement and environmental stewardship.
Crowley Organizational Changes
Crowley announced several management changes within its logistics services group. Robert (Bob) Weist has been promoted to vice president of sales and will be responsible for all business development functions and North American transportation services, including trucking and rail. He remains domiciled in Jacksonville and reports to Steve Collar, senior vice president and general manager, logistics. Weist will help develop an actionable marketing plan and sales strategy, while ensuring that Crowley continues to provide value-added customer solutions.
The Coast Guard Announces Deployment of Homeport
The Coast Guard officially announced its initial deployment of Homeport, an internet portal. Homeport (version 1.0) is the official Coast Guard information technology system for maritime security created to provide information and services to the maritime community and the public over the Internet. Coast Guard Federal Maritime Security Coordinators will use Homeport as a primary means for the day-to-day management and communication of port security matters with Area Maritime Security Committee members, commercial vessel and facility owners and operators, government partners, and the public.
