Denel, tkMS to Partner on Naval Ship Upgrades
As Denel gets ready to revive the Naval Dockyard facilities in Simonstown, the company is collaborating with thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) for joint support of the South African Navy frigates and submarines. Denel, which is a global supplier of defense products and solutions, and tkMS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on board the SAS Amatola, in Rostock, Germany. The cooperation is based on the recognition of the critical importance of the operational availability of the South African Navy Fleet at all times. Denel’s Maritime division will take responsibility for maintenance and upgrades on three Heroine Class submarines (SAS Manthatisi, SAS Charlotte Maxeke and SAS Queen Modjadji) and four Valour Class Frigates (SAS Amatola, SAS Isandlwana, SAS Spioenkop and SAS Mendi).

Bart Otten heads the Fire and Security Business Unit of UTC in Europe, Middle-East and Africa both for the land and marine business sides. He is also in charge of United Technologies’ entire Marine business initiative. Based in the Europe head office in Brussels, Otten, a Dutch citizen himself, has worked within the UTC Group since 2007.

RS Will Participate in IMDS 2013
Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) will for the first time participate in the International Maritime Defense Show (IMDS 2013) to take place in St Petersburg from July 3-7, 2013. RS will feature design support services, construction and repair services for ships and supply vessels of different types materials and products certification, production process survey as well as management system certification of enterprises participating in the Government Defense Procurement procedures and organizations engaged in research, development, production, delivery, maintenance, operation, repair and disposal of military equipment and defense products.
