L-3 SAM Electronics to Exhibit at Nor-Shipping 2013

L-3 MAPPS Awarded Contract for Degaussing Systems

L-3 MAPPS won a contract to supply degaussing systems for the Royal Canadian Navy’s 12 KINGSTON-Class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels. These degaussing systems will be delivered and supported locally in collaboration with SAM Electronics, an L-3 company, which produces one of the most effective means of ship protection against modern sea mines. The SAM Electronics solution reduces the magnetic signature of ships to safe levels mitigating the threat from sea mines and has been successfully delivered to 15 of the world’s leading navies. We are pleased to expand the scope of our product and service offerings in Canada to include electrical systems from L-3’s SAM Electronics business,” said Rangesh Kasturi, vice president of marketing and sales for L-3 MAPPS Marine Systems and Simulation.

New Counter-Mine Technology for Ships

Using a high-temperature technology developed by the Office of Naval Research, the U.S. Navy has successfully launched a new counter-mine tool to protect its fleet at sea. American Superconductor and Navy Test HTS on USS Higgins

American Superconductor Corporation, announced that it has supplied critical components to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) Ship Engineering Station Philadelphia for a high temperature superconductor (HTS) degaussing coil system that has successfully completed initial electrical testing onboard the USS Higgins (DDG 76), an 8,000-ton Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Powered by AMSC’s HTS wire and magnet cable technology, the coil system will undergo U.S. Navy sea trials over the next two years on the Higgins. SAM Gets South Korean Navy Contract

SAM Electronics of Hamburg has been awarded a major contract for supply and installation of advanced degaussing systems aboard five of the South Korean Navy’s new KDX-II frigates being built at the Daewoo and Hyundai yards. An option for equipping two further vessels is pending. Featuring either manual or automatic control in master/slave modes, the computer-controlled systems basically comprise a degaussing control unit (DCU), a power supply assembly and a magnetic probe facility for acquisition of magnetic earth fields relative to ship’s coordinates. Each is additionally characterised by a reduced number of coil cables, so allowing for significant reductions in weight and costs of cabling. Other main advantages include an enhanced capability for magnetic calibration during ranging.
