First Vessel Heads for MD's Cove Point LNG

The first liquefied natural gas vessel, the Maran Gas Delphi, was headed Thursday for Dominion Energy Inc's Cove Point LNG export facility in Maryland, a Reuters interactive map showed, with the facility expected to enter service by the end of the year. Cove Point will be the second large LNG export terminal in the lower 48 U.S. states, after Cheniere Energy Inc's Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana, which exported its first cargo in February 2016. The Maran Gas Delphi, which is currently entering the Chesapeake Bay, is expected to arrive at the $4 billion terminal later Thursday. It can hold about 3.3 billion cubic feet (bcf) natural gas. One bcf is enough fuel for about 5 million U.S. homes.

For U.S. railroads alone, which consumed 3.6 billion gallons of diesel in 2012, the potential savings are huge. Yet more than a year after Warren Buffett's BNSF Railways Corp generated big headlines with a plan to test a handful of natgas locomotives…

Training on Z-Drives with Jeff Slesinger

Captain Jeff Slesinger, trainer and author. Photo courtesy Jeff Slesinger

I asked a friend at Seattle’s Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) if she thought someone like me could successfully complete just one maneuvering task in their tug simulator after a couple hours of training. Ten years ago I’d run a cutter aground in San Francisco Bay when my Officer Candidate class was let loose in the Coast Guard Academy’s simulator, but that was the extent of my shiphandling experience, real or virtual. As a testament to her optimism, my friend scheduled me in PMI’s Z-drive tug simulator last January under the instruction of Captain Jeff Slesinger…
