Delta Western Awarded $63.7M Contract

Delta Western, Inc., Anchorage, Alaska, is being awarded a $63.7m fixed price with economic price adjustment contract for fuel products and delivery services. Using services are Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Federal Civilian Agencies. This acquisition is a partial set aside of 3 percent with the remaining 97 percent to be awarded on a competitive basis. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The proposal was originally solicited with 12 responses. Date of performance completion is September 30, 2011. The contracting activity is Defense Energy Supply Center (DESC), Fort Belvoir, Va.

Pollution Response Team to Conduct Training in Juneau

A multi-agency pollution response training event will be conducted in the Juneau area during this week from May 13-15. The exercise is being coordinated under the Preparedness for Response Exercise Program, which has established requirements for periodically exercising oil spill response contingency plans throughout the country. A joint exercise team, consisting of local oil spill response planners, has been meeting to plan this exercise since January. A specialized team of Coast Guard exercise planners from the National Strike Force Coordination Center in North Carolina facilitated the team throughout the planning process. The Juneau Delta Western facility volunteered to participate as the lead industry planner for the exercise.

HMS Announces Management Hires

Marine services company Harley Marine Services (HMS) has expanded its management team, naming Don Martin as Vice President and General Counsel and Steve Carlson as Vice President of Engineering, the company announced today. Prior to joining Harley Marine, Martin was the Vice President and General Counsel for Delta Western and Hawaii Petroleum where he oversaw all aspects of safety, risk management and regulatory compliance for the fuel distribution companies. U.S. Barge Delivers Combination Deck/Tank Barge

U.S. Barge LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vigor Industrial LLC, this week will deliver a combination Deck and Tank Barge to NorthStar Gas LLC, an Alaskan Petroleum Distributor. The CAUNEQ was christened on April 15, 2011 and will start making deliveries in May to the Yukon, Kuskokwim and Western Alaska Costal Regions. NorthStar Gas and its operating partner, Delta Western, will use this barge to service customers in Western Alaska, stabilizing the transportation costs of fuel in the region.

Crowley Acquires Alaska Fuel Distribution Businesses

Crowley acquired the Alaska-based fuel distribution business of Northland Fuel, LLC. The purchase consists of the assets of Yukon Fuel Company, Northland Vessel Leasing and the stock of Service Oil and Gas, Inc. Crowley has also acquired the assets of Yutana Barge Lines, LLC from an affiliated company. The acquired businesses will be added to Crowley's newly formed Petroleum Services business segment. Service Oil and Gas will continue to operate under that brand name. As a condition of the acquisition, Crowley agrees to sell assets (including tugs, barges, and fuel storage capacity) to Delta Western, a Seattle-based petroleum distributor.

Carlile Transportation Joins Saltchuk Companies

Carlile Transportation Systems, one of the largest trucking and logistics companies in Alaska, has been acquired by Saltchuk Resources, a Seattle-based family of diversified transportation and petroleum distribution companies. “Our relationship with Saltchuk is 20 years long, already having been friends, vendors and customers," said Harry McDonald, Carlile CEO and cofounder. Carlile will remain a standalone company headquartered in Anchorage. “As with all of the Saltchuk companies, we will reinvest in Carlile’s assets, pursue growth opportunities and build on the very strong foundation the McDonald family has built for the future,” said Mark Tabbutt, of Saltchuk. Carlile’s 700 employees will join Saltchuk’s national team of 5,500 persons.

Niger Delta Avengers: Attacks Against Nigeria's Oil Sector Coming

Nigerian militant group Niger Delta Avengers said on Wednesday it will launch attacks on the country's oil sector in the next few days.   "This round of attacks will be the most deadly and will be targeting the deep sea operations of the multinationals," it said in a statement on its website.   In November, the group, which attacked oil facilities in 2016, said it had ended a ceasefire.   Reporting by Tife Owolabi

Francois Named CEO of Delta Towing

Hercules Offshore, Inc. has appointed Larry Francois as Chief Executive Officer and President of Delta Towing effective August 20. Delta Towing, a subsidiary of Hercules Offshore, operates a fleet of 96 marine vessels, including 42 inland tugs, 18 offshore tugs and 36 crew boats, as well as 60 barges, including 30 deck barges, 17 shale barges, four spud barges and one offshore barge in the Gulf of Mexico. Larry has over 30 years of industry experience, most recently serving as Sr. Vice President Operations for Trico Marine Services, Inc. Rotterdam: News From The World's Largest Port

Baltica Line has risen the frequency of its Saint Petersburg service . By deploying a third vessel it is possible to offer a sailing from Rotterdam every five days instead of 10. Mr. Peter van Dijk will temporarily replace Mr. Hans Simons as Alderman for the Port and Economic Affairs. The latter has been seriously ill for some time. So far Van Dijk was leader of the social democrat party in the municipal council. Morcon intends to take over Uniport container terminal. The latter is not considered part of the core business of its present owner Kühne & Nagel anymore. Morcon already owns a distribution terminal in Moerdijk and three empty depots and a container terminal in Rotterdam. Last year this terminal handled 115,000 containers. Uniport expects to handle 200,000 containers in 2000.

FortisBC – a subsidiary of Fortis Inc. has officially started construction of its $400 million Tilbury LNG Facility expansion project today. The company is adding 1.1 million gigajoules of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to storage and 34,000 gigajoules per day of liquefaction capacity. FortisBC marked the occasion with a ground-breaking ceremony attended by The Honourable Christy Clark, Premier of British Columbia; Delta Mayor Lois Jackson; as well as Scott Hamilton, MLA North Delta; and Vicki Huntington, MLA South Delta. Report: Attack on ECO Supply Ship Kills One

A Nigerian oil worker was killed and another injured on Tuesday in an armed attack on a supply ship operated by a U Edison Chouest Offshore, Reuters reported. "Armed men came alongside the vessel at 0300 hours (O200 GMT) and got on board to look for things to take. They executed one of the crew when they didn't find anything," an unnamed source told the news agency. The supply ship was operated by Edison Chouest Offshore, a Louisiana-based oil services company, a security source said. The ship was working on an oilfield about three miles offshore operated by U.S. energy giant Chevron, but officials from the California-based company were also unavailable to comment. The field is part of the Escravos oil export system, which normally exports about 160,000 barrels of oil per day.

Chinese Mega Ports Increased in Number in 2011

The number of such ports was 22 in 2010, and 12 in 2006. Among the 26 100-million-ton handling capacity ports, 17 are costal and nine are inland, said a statistical bulletin, which was commissioned by China's Ministry of Transport and featured in 'China Daily'. Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, in east China's Zhejiang province, came out on top, with an annual handling capacity of 694 million tons of throughput in 2011, according to the statistical bulletin. Eleven ports on the list are located in the Yangtze River Delta, and two are in the central and western regions of China: Chongqing Port and Beibu Gulf Port. China has also seen a strong momentum…

Carl Vinson Strike Group Departs for Deployment to Western Pacific

More than 6,000 Sailors assigned to Carl Vinson Strike Group ships and units departed the U.S. West Coast, Jan. 4-5, for a regularly scheduled deployment to the Western Pacific. The deployment marks the second time the Carl Vinson Strike Group will operate throughout the Indo- Pacific region under U.S. 3rd Fleet's command and control. The strike group became the first in recent history to demonstrate the command and control construct called Third Fleet Forward when units completed a six-month deployment last year. Chengxi Shipyard to Build Deltamarin's Bulk Carriers

The new orders are the first B. Delta 37 bulk carriers to be built at Chengxi shipyard and have been specifically amended to take into account specific requirements of China Navigation. Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industries Co. is currently building other B. Delta 37 handy-size bulk carriers for Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) and M.T.M. Ship Management Pte Ltd. / Strategic Shipping Inc. and additional shipbuilding contracts are expected to be signed within a few months. •    Length over all 180 m. •    Beam 30 m. •    Scantling draft 10.50 m. •    Deadweight 39,500 metric tonnes. •    Cargo cubic 48,500 m3. Delta Power Secures Order From Irish Coastguard

In 2011, the Irish Coastguard placed a contract with Delta Power Group (builder of Delta RIBs) to supply 12 highly specified RIBs as part of a five year program of replacements and updates in its extensive fleet of search and rescue craft. Three 9.00m Delta RIBs, fitted with shockwave seating and Yamaha F225 Outboard motors, have already been delivered in 2011. As a follow-up to this delivery, the next installment in the contract is for seven slightly smaller RIBs – namely, one x DELTA 7.00m X, two x DELTA 7.50m Xs and four x DELTA 8.00m Super Xs. The demanding delivery schedule requested was just three months, with tests and trials throughout  January, 2012.

Delta Towing Wins Out in Legal Tussle

LeBlanc Bland P.L.L.C. announces important Fifth Circuit Maritime Ruling: decision addresses enforceability of liquidated damages provision. An important Fifth Circuit decision in a dispute over the enforceability of a liquidated damages provision -- here, triggered by breaches of a non-compete clause in the sale of two vessels -- constitutes only the third time the Fifth Circuit has addressed this enforceability issue under maritime law. The decision was handed down last week in the case of International Marine, L.L.C. and International Offshore Services, L.L.C. versus Delta Towing L.L.C., where the Fifth Circuit found in favor of the seller, Delta, and upheld the enforceability of the liquidated damages provision.

Delta Queen Named Ship of the Year

Legendary Delta Queen, a National Historic Landmark, has been named Ship of the Year by the Steamship Historical Society of America. "Delta Queen is the last operating steamboat of her era and is one of the most historic vessels in the world," said William duBarry, president of the society. Delta Queen was launched on the Sacramento River in 1927, and offered overnight service between Sacramento and San Francisco until 1940. When the Great Depression brought an end to her trips, the U.S. Navy leased Delta Queen as a troops barracks and then a shuttle for a servicemen traveling to and from ships in San Francisco Bay.

McGinnis Appointed VP Of Marketing

American Classic Voyages Co. has appointed Scott G. McGinnis vice president of marketing for its Delta Queen product group, which includes Delta Queen Steamboat Company and Delta Queen Coastal Voyages. McGinnis is responsible for all marketing activity on behalf of Delta Queen Steamboat Company's four riverboats, which cruise throughout the U.S. Heartland, South and Pacific Northwest, and Delta Queen Coastal Voyages' two ships, inaugurating 12 coastal vacation itineraries throughout the Americas this year. McGinnis joins AMCV after six years with the travel agency consortium Virtuoso, where he most recently served as the managing director for member relations.

Pilot Boat Uses Advanced Ventilation

Long Beach, California, is the second largest container vessel port in the United States. With rush periods now demanding bigger boats with more seating, Jacobsen Pilot Service needed a dependable, new craft to deliver up to eight pilots to incoming ships. They turned to Hike Metal, who supplied a 54 ft. welded aluminum pilot boat equipped with Delta "T" Systems ventilation equipment that provides peak engine performance. To keep the engine room free from damaging salt spray, Hike Metal outfitted the Long Beach Pilot Boat with Delta "T" Systems moisture eliminators.
