Manitowoc Selected to Build Navy Lighterage System (INLS)

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. and its subsidiary, Marinette Marine Corporation, part of the Manitowoc Marine Group, have been awarded a $40.5 million contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Department of the U.S. Navy, to build the Improved Navy Lighterage System (INLS). The contract contains additional fixed options that can be exercised over the next five years for a maximum amount of $404.8 million. As part of the initial contract, Marinette Marine will build 29 barges that can be assembled into floating platforms or causeway systems to transport heavy materials such as tanks, trucks, and cargo between ship and shore. Each barge will be approximately 80 ft. by 24 ft., will weigh between 75 and 124 tons, and will be capable of carrying approximately 150 tons of cargo.

Lakes Appointed VP at Marinette Marine

Marty Lakes has been appointed as vice president and general manager of Marinette Marine Corporation, a subsidiary of The Manitowoc Company. He will assume his new responsibilities immediately and will report to Dennis McCloskey, president of Manitowoc’s Marine Group. In his new role, Lakes will have total profit and loss responsibility for Marinette Marine and will oversee all engineering, operations, logistical and sourcing functions. In addition, Lakes will direct strategic development, lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.

The Manitowoc Company Launches Staten Island Ferry

Marinette Marine Corporation, a subsidiary of The Manitowoc Company, Inc., launched the ferry Guy V. Molinari, for New York City's Department of Transportation, on September 20. This 310-ft. ferry is one of three to be built as part of a $120-million contract that was awarded to Manitowoc in 2001. The launch ceremony featured Michael R. Bloomberg, mayor of New York, and Guy V. Molinari as the keynote speakers, with the Honorable Susan Molinari, former U.S. Congresswoman from New York and daughter of the ship's namesake, as the sponsor, who performed the traditional christening ceremony. Manitowoc to Build Oil Barges for Moran

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. through its subsidiary, Bay Shipbuilding Co., part of Manitowoc's Marine Group, has been awarded a contract from Moran Towing Corporation to build two ocean-class, double-hull, hot oil tank barges. The first barge is scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2004, and the second in the second quarter of 2005. Other contract terms were not disclosed. Each of the 110,000-barrel capacity barges will measure 425 feet in length by 78 feet in width and will be configured with 10 cargo compartments serviced by three diesel-driven, deep-well cargo pumps. The barges will also feature a stern notch and an Intercon coupling system, which will link the units to customer-supplied tugs.

News: First Staten Island Ferry

Marinette Marine Corporation last month launched the ferry Guy V. Molinari, for New York City's Department of Transportation. Manitowoc Wins DH Barge Contract

Hornbeck Offshore Transportation has contracted with Manitowoc Co. to build a 110,000-barrel, double hull tank barge due for delivery in one year, with an option to purchase three additional units within the next year. The contract will be fulfilled through Manitowoc's Toledo ShipRepair Co. "this contract marks the first new-construction project for the Toledo facility in approximately 15 years," said Dennis McCloskey, president of Manitowoc's Marine Group. The Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority has agreed to provide $7.5 million for the facility upgrade, following the commitment by Manitowoc to pursue additional new construction business for the facility.

Manitowoc Group Launches Cutter

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. has launched the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alder, the last ship in a series of 16 seagoing buoy tenders being built at Manitowoc’s Marinette Marine subsidiary. This 225-ft, Juniper-class vessel is part of a series of contracts that were awarded to Marinette in 1993 and 1998. “ALDER is a highly sophisticated cutter that will help the U.S. Coast Guard’s homeland security efforts and other missions,” said Dennis McCloskey, president of Manitowoc’s Marine Group. Manitowoc Marine Group Lays Keel of Great Lakes Ice Breaker

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. held a keel laying ceremony yesterday at its Marinette Marine subsidiary for the Coast Guard's newest icebreaker, the Mackinaw.. The ceremony featured Admiral Thomas Collins, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, as the keynote speaker, with Jean Hastert, wife of J. Dennis Hastert, Speaker of the House, serving as the ship's sponsor and authenticator. "The construction of this multi-mission vessel further demonstrates Manitowoc's superior technical and engineering capabilities," said Dennis McCloskey, president of Manitowoc Marine Group. "We are on schedule to deliver this innovative icebreaker in 2005. Not only is the Mackinaw the newest vessel we're building for the U.S. The Mackinaw will be approximately 240 ft. long, 60 ft. wide, and displace 3,500 long tons.

Feature: And Then There Were Two

The long-awaited awarding of the contract to construct the new series of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), a series that could total 60 ships worth $14 billion over 15 years, will have to wait just a little longer. Last of Three Built for NYC's DOT

Marinette Marine Corporation, a subsidiary of The Manitowoc Company, Inc. launched the ferry Spirit of America for New York City's Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) on December 18. This 310- ft. ferry is the third of three Staten Island Ferries to be built as part of a $120-million contract that was awarded to Manitowoc in 2001. The ships are the largest ever launched at the Marinette Marine facility. The launch featured Margaret Gordon, Executive Director of Safety and Security for the Staten Island Ferries, performing the traditional christening ceremony. Manitowoc and Kvichak Marine to Develop and Construct Prototype RB-M for Coast Guard

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. and its subsidiary, Marinette Marine Corporation, will partner with Kvichak Marine Industries, Inc. to develop and construct a prototype Response Boat Medium (RB-M) for the U.S. Coast Guard. Kvichak, located in Seattle with full-service waterfront facilities, will build the prototype RB-M. The Marinette/Kvichak team is using a design developed by Camarc, Ltd., an expert in the design of water jet-driven high-speed aluminum boats. Marinette Marine will serve as the prime contractor and program manager for the project. Delivery of the $2.5-million test boat is expected in late 2003. “We are pleased to work with the Northwest’s finest high-speed aluminum boat builder on this very important project,” said Dennis McCloskey, president of Manitowoc’s Marine Group.

LCS Program Team Announced

Trumpeting the strength of combining leaders in systems engineering, mid-market shipbuilding and naval architecture, officials from Lockheed Martin, Gibbs & Cox, Bollinger Shipyards and Marinette Marine today announced a teaming effort to capture the Navy's Littoral Combat Ship program. The Navy considers LCS its most transformational effort and number one budget priority. "In the process of creating this team, we carefully considered all of the innovative and unique requirements the Navy needs in this new ship," said Fred Moosally, president of Lockheed Martin's Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems. Lockheed Martin will be the prime contractor, with Gibbs & Cox, Bollinger Shipyards and Marinette Marine sharing significant roles as principal team members.

Byrne Retires From Manitowoc Marine Group

The Manitowoc Company announced that Thomas J. Byrne, president and general manager of Manitowoc Marine Group and vice president of The Manitowoc Company, will retire at the end of 2002. Dennis McCloskey, current vice president and general manager of the Marinette Marine Corporation, will succeed him in overseeing all aspects of Manitowoc Marine Group, including Marinette Marine, Bay Shipbuilding, and the company's Toledo and Cleveland operations. Byrne played a key role in the growth of Manitowoc's marine business, generating many commercial and government contracts and assimilating Marinette Marine after it was acquired in 2000. Prior to his role of president and general manager, Byrne served as vice president of business development from 1998 through 2000.
