Mohawk Changes Command
Coast Guard Cmdr. Craig J. Wieschhorster took command of the medium-endurance Cutter Mohawk during a ceremony Thursday at Coast Guard Sector Key West. Coast Guard Atlantic Area chief of staff, Capt. Doug Fears presided over the change of command ceremony as Wieschhorster relieved Cmdr. Adam B. Morrison of the duties and responsibilities as 14th commanding officer of the Cutter Mohawk. “Although I leave the Cutter Mohawk with a heavy heart,” said Morrison, “I have trust in Cmdr. Morrison was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal recognizing his service and performance of duty.

Higgins Named CEO of Nichols Brothers Boat Builders
Gavin Higgins has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Ice Floe LLC dba Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB), the company announced today. Effective immediately, Higgins replaces Matt Nichols, one of the company’s founders who has served as CEO of NBBB since February 2012, also serving as CEO for more than 35 years prior to the company’s sale in 2008. Nichols will remain with the company as its Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, and as a member of the board of directors.
Willard Marine Appoints Bryson Director of Engineering
With over 20 years of maritime experience, Bryson was previously with Derecktor Shipyards, Christensen Shipyards, and Heisley Marine Corp. Bryson also served as Director of Engineering at Brunswick Corporation, overseeing approximately 50 engineers and launching eight new products annually over a five-year period. Seakeeper Welcomes New Regional Sales Manager
Expanding its national sales force, Seakeeper named Brook Streit as regional sales manager for North America. Streit will be responsible for generating business in the recreational market. "Brook's great contacts and extensive industry knowledge will help us as we focus on the refit market over the upcoming months," said John Kermet, Seakeeper VP of sales and marketing. MTU 4000 Engines Power New LNG Terminal Tugs
Boston Harbor has been an important shipping center for more than 300 years, from its influx of European immigrants to the wide variety of cargo it handles today. Since the early 1970s, the area has become a major center for unloading the liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers that supply natural gas to much of the Northeast. The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) announced that Derecktor Shipyards Connecticut had been chosen as the selected supplier for a five year service and supply contract for maintenance and repair of the Austen Class Staten Island Ferry Boats. The award represents a major success for the Bridgeport Ct shipyard, as it is the initial major service contract to result from the yards newly expanded 4000 ton dry dock. Cakewalk, Largest Yacht Ever Built in the U.S.
On August 8, Derecktor Shipyards launched the 281-ft motor yacht Cakewalk, the largest yacht (by volume) ever built in the U.S. The six deck, 2,998 gross ton vessel floated off Derecktor’s new 4000 ton dry-dock into the waters of Bridgeport harbor, after several years and many thousands of skilled labor hours. Cakewalk was designed by Tim Heywood Designs with Naval Architecture by Azure Naval Architecture. Interior design was by Dalton Designs, Inc. Literally dozens of subcontractors from engineering firms to security specialists participated in the project.
Derecktor Christens New Dry Dock
The Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Joan McDonald shook off her champagne soaked hands and flashed a big smile after she smashed a champagne bottle on her first try to christen the "Robert E. McDonald had the honor of christening the Robert E. Derecktor, the newly recommissioned dry dock at Derecktor Shipyards. The dry dock will allow the Bridgeport boat yard to repair and build larger ships. “The partnership between Derecktor Shipyards and the state has been a fruitful one and one we hope will continue for years to come,” said Joan McDonald. “Derecktor is a brand known round the world, and we’re proud to support its growth.
Derecktor’s 4000 ton Dry Dock Ready
This spring Derecktor Shipyards of Connecticut will put its’ newly expanded dry dock to work. The dock will allow the yard to fully service vessels up to 4,000 long tons, 400 ft in length, 82 ft in beam and 20 ft draft. The expanded dry dock will also provide a seamless method of moving these large vessels from the water onto the repair apron or into the yard’s main building via the dock and a system of air casters. The expanded dry dock will greatly increase the yard’s capacity for repair and refit of multiple vessels during peak periods.
70 Shipyards Awarded ARRA Grants
The Department of Transportation has announced 70 grants totaling $98m in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds that will be used to improve small shipyards throughout the United States. The funds, awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Assistance to Small Shipyards program, will help create and preserve jobs, provide valuable employment training and make much needed improvements to shipyards across the country. The Small Shipyards Grant program provides up to 75 percent in ARRA funds for a project and requires the remainder be matched by the shipyard. A detailed list of the grantees is as follows. • Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc., Philadelphia, PA: $2,312,614, for the first year of training program.
Shipyard files Chapter 11, but Derecktor Maintains its Course to Grow
Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC last month filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The company said the filing was the result of a single contract dispute, and that it is still busy and fully staffed, working on several newbuild projects, including a contract to build a massive 85.6-m motor yacht, a 45-m catamaran and a pair of tugboats for Boston Towing and Transport. In addition, the Derecktor yard in Connecticut has a building slot open starting September 2008, as well as a build slot available for delivery at the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. "The company has been engaged in lengthy negotiations to resolve issues relating to one of its contracts," said Paul Derecktor, president.
Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC Announces Chapter 11 Filing
On July 18, 2008, Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC announced that the company filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The company said that it intends to maintain all normal business operations throughout the bankruptcy process. Its decision to file bankruptcy was a result of several factors, most notably issues relating to a contractual dispute. “The company has been engaged in lengthy negotiations to resolve issues relating to one of its contracts,” said Paul Derecktor, president of the company. Mr. Derecktor continued, “The action we have taken is a necessary step to preserve the company’s value for its creditors, customers, employees and other stakeholders as we work towards the future success of the company.
Maritime Administration Awards $9.8m in Shipyard Grants
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced $9.8m in grants to 19 small shipyards in the . The grants are part of the new Assistance to Small Shipyards program, set up under the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006. “Small shipyards are vitally important for the health of the maritime industry, and for the economy of the Nation,” said Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton. The purpose of the grants is to make capital and infrastructure improvements that facilitate the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and quality of domestic ship construction, conversion or repair for commercial and federal government use. The grants cover a maximum of 75-percent of the estimated cost of improvements. The companies are responsible for the remainder.
The World's Largest Sailing Catamaran to Set Record
Hemisphere (formerly Project Gemini), designed by naval architects Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) and built by Derecktor Shipyards in Bridgeport, CT, is on course for delivery later in 2008. With a length overall of 145 ft. and a gross tonnage of just under 500, is set to scoop the record as the world's largest sailing catamaran. The result is a design with practical features blending speed and stability with both space and style. It features a draft of only 9.8ft aimed to add ease of maneuverability and access to ports and lagoons inaccessible to monohulls of comparable size.
Derecktor Eyes Military Deal
Derecktor Shipyards could be building high-speed ferries for the U.S. military in Bridgeport if it and its partners can edge out some tough competition for what could be a $234m defense contract. Exactly how many consortiums have bid on the Joint High Speed Vessel for the Army and Navy is unclear. Only two groups have verified they are going after the contract to develop a completely new vessel for the Navy. Derecktor and its partners, Maersk Line Ltd., which is the U.S. subsidiary of Dutch A.P. Moller Maersk Group, and naval architects Gibbs & Cox confirmed they're in the contest this month. Louisiana-based Bollinger Shipyards Inc.
Maersk Enters Bid to Build Ships for Navy
Maersk Line Ltd. has submitted a bid to the Navy in hopes of winning a Defense Department contract to design and construct the Pentagon's proposed Joint High Speed Vessel, or JHSV. The Navy and Army plan to order at least eight of the ships for rapid transport of troops, supplies and equipment through shallow waters to small or damaged ports - for both military and humanitarian-relief missions. Maersk has tapped New York-based Derecktor Shipyards, one of the largest U.S. builders of commercial vessels, as its shipbuilding partner. The JHSVs would be built at the shipbuilder's Bridgeport, Conn., yard. Vessels: What’s in Store for 2004?
The 2003 workboat construction market had its ups and downs and at best has given mixed signals about 2004 and beyond. Among the various workboat vessel segments, passenger vessels, excluding ferries and inland waterway vessels such as tugs and push boats, are in a static mode. Vessels will be built in 2004, but at a pace constant with years past. Some markets such as the building of patrol boats and other vessels with national security implications appear are sure bet winners for 2004 with several shipyards with large contracts that have deliveries stretched out for two years or more in some cases. Another market that continues to grow is high-speed aluminum passenger ferry and the slower passenger/vehicle ferries.
Feature: Passenger Vessels : What's in Store in 2004?
The passenger vessel market is a classic mature marine market. Segments of it are doing well, while other parts have literally died. For example, the overnight segment of the market saw one substantial vessel delivered in 2003 with none on the horizon for 2004. The Empress of the North, a 360-ft. sternwheeler was put into service in September working the West Coast-Alaska route. Now that ice is a problem in Alaska, the vessel is working the Columbia River system in the Northwest U.S. The vessel was the largest vessel ever built by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders, Freeland, Wash. and is owned by American West Steamboat Company, Portland, Ore. Developing overnight service is the most difficult part of the passenger vessel industry to get established.
