Derecktor Delivers 85 ft. Freight Ferry

The Fire Island Ferries, Inc. took delivery of AMERICA, an 85 ft. Freight Boat built by Derecktor Shipyard Conn. LLC. This is the first boat to have been delivered by Derecktor’s Connecticut facility. AMERICA will be used between the Long Island operator’s home port of Bay Shore, on the South shore of Long Island, and various destinations on Fire Island. The new vessel shall be used primarily to ferry cargo needed by contractors working on Fire Island, and various commercial delivery vehicles and contractors. Designed by Nigel Gee & Associates, the ferry is a fairly traditional looking vessel with a singlechined hull. Hull and superstructure are all-aluminum alloy. The bow of the boat has an enclosed section for cargo storage and passengers.

Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC Announces Chapter 11 Filing

On July 18, 2008, Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC announced that the company filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The company said that it intends to maintain all normal business operations throughout the bankruptcy process. Its decision to file bankruptcy was a result of several factors, most notably issues relating to a contractual dispute. “The company has been engaged in lengthy negotiations to resolve issues relating to one of its contracts,” said Paul Derecktor, president of the company. Mr. Derecktor continued, “The action we have taken is a necessary step to preserve the company’s value for its creditors, customers, employees and other stakeholders as we work towards the future success of the company.

Shipyard files Chapter 11, but Derecktor Maintains its Course to Grow

Derecktor Shipyards Conn., LLC last month filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The company said the filing was the result of a single contract dispute, and that it is still busy and fully staffed, working on several newbuild projects, including a contract to build a massive 85.6-m motor yacht, a 45-m catamaran and a pair of tugboats for Boston Towing and Transport. In addition, the Derecktor yard in Connecticut has a building slot open starting September 2008, as well as a build slot available for delivery at the end of 2011/beginning of 2012. "The company has been engaged in lengthy negotiations to resolve issues relating to one of its contracts," said Paul Derecktor, president.

Derecktor-built Ferry to be Christened

The wife of Alaska’s senior senator Ted Stevens, is scheduled to christen Alaska's latest fast ferry at the Derecktor Shipyard in Bridgeport, Conn. The ship -- M/V Chenega -- is scheduled to begin service in Alaska’s Prince William Sound in late spring. Designed by Nigel Gee and built by Derecktor Shipyard, the vessel is the second aluminum passenger and vehicle carrying catamaran built for the state. Once it is put into service, it will provide daily service between its homeport of Cordova and the surface highway accessible communities of Valdez and Whittier -- at travel times of almost half those of most Alaska Marine Highway vessels.

NEWS:Derecktor Tapped to Build Second 73M Ferry for AMHS

Derecktor's investment in a new construction facility in Bridgeport, Conn., has paid off with a prestigious contract to build two new high-spec ferries for the Alaska Marine Highway System. Will the company soon be able to lure new defense construction business to the buildings? The State of Alaska gave notice to Derecktor Shipyards to proceed on construction of a second high-speed ferry for the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS). M/V Chenega is the second of a two-ferry $67.9 million contract. In February 2002 Derecktor Shipyards was awarded the contract to design and build two high-speed passenger & automobile ferries as the first phase of Alaska's plans to re-tool its regional water transportation system with fast, modern, efficient, environmentally-friendly vessels.

MV Chenega to be Delayed

In an expectation that the delivery of the state’s second fast vehicle ferry, M/V Chenega, will likely be delayed until late April or even May 1, the Alaska Marine Highway System decided to schedule the M/V Aurora for Prince William Sound service from May 15-June 30. AMHS reservations operators began taking reservations for the Aurora on February 22. “The latest word we have from Derecktor Shipyards in Bridgeport, Conn., is that, due to problems with the shipyard’s electrical subcontractor, delays have been incurred with the equipment testing, dockside and sea trials. The Chenega will not be delivered until late April or as late as May 1,” said AMHS General Manager John Falvey.

Maritime Administration Awards $9.8m in Shipyard Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration announced $9.8m in grants to 19 small shipyards in the . The grants are part of the new Assistance to Small Shipyards program, set up under the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2006. “Small shipyards are vitally important for the health of the maritime industry, and for the economy of the Nation,” said Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton. The purpose of the grants is to make capital and infrastructure improvements that facilitate the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and quality of domestic ship construction, conversion or repair for commercial and federal government use. The grants cover a maximum of 75-percent of the estimated cost of improvements. The companies are responsible for the remainder.

Jensen Maritime Consultants hired its third naval architect, Jianjun Qi, in the company’s new office in the New Orleans business district, reporting to Jensen General Manager Sergio Fifi. Qi brings to Jensen a decade of naval architecture, marine engineering and shipyard expertise. Before joining Jensen he worked as a naval architect at Incat Crowther, of Morgan City, La., a diversified naval architecture group, and served as a senior naval architect for Derecktor Shipyard in Bridgeford, Conn.

Derecktor Shipyards has been granted a contract by Lighthouse Landings to construct a 115 ft. (35 m) aluminum high-speed catamaran ferry to be built at the yard's Mamaroneck, N.Y. facility. The catamaran holds the distinction of being the premiere vessel in a fleet of four that will be built for a new passenger service scheduled to begin in Spring/Summer 2001 between Stamford, Conn. and New York City. The vessels' operator, Lighthouse Landings, through its operating subsidiary, New York Fast Ferries Services, Inc. (NYFF) currently provides fast commuter service between Highlands, N.J. and New York City. The new vessels will be built to a design in accordance with Nigel Gee and Associates (NGA) of Southampton, England.

The Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Joan McDonald shook off her champagne soaked hands and flashed a big smile after she smashed a champagne bottle on her first try to christen the "Robert E. McDonald had the honor of christening the Robert E. Derecktor, the newly recommissioned dry dock at Derecktor Shipyards. The dry dock will allow the Bridgeport boat yard to repair and build larger ships. “The partnership between Derecktor Shipyards and the state has been a fruitful one and one we hope will continue for years to come,” said Joan McDonald. “Derecktor is a brand known round the world, and we’re proud to support its growth.

Derecktor Shipyard Named Licensed Damen Builder

Damen licenses another U.S. Robert E. Derecktor Inc. and Damen Shipyard Group have entered into a license agreement authorizing Derecktor to act as an official builder of Damen designs. The agreement will see Derecktor offer its customers pilot boats and wind farm support vessels combining the range and international experience of Damen designs with its own American craftsmanship, which Derecktor says creates an innovative, cost-effective experience for its customers, with proven performance and reliable U.S.-based support and maintenance.

Derecktor Shipyards Chosen By SENESCO For Subcontract

Company (SENESCO) to provide construction support on a 140,000 barrel fuel barge project. Derecktor garnered the job as a result of their unique ability to bend one inch thick steel in the compound curves required on the project. Derecktor will build the bow section as well as roll the plate for both the stern and the section just aft of the bow. "Being chosen for the job by SENESCO, a leader in double-hulled barge construction and itself a specialist in steel fabrication, is a gratifying endorsement of our abilities and our record of delivering for the customer" commented Derecktor General Manager Gavin Higgins. The work will be done at Derecktor's 23-acre Bridgeport CT facility and is expected to be completed in March 2006.

Passenger Vessels:Derecktor Expansion in Bridgeport Extends Capabilities

The expansion of fast ferry building facilities has taken another gigantic step on the U.S. East Coast. In concert with a beehive of new capacity construction down south, Derecktor Shipyards recently announced that it has completed construction on a 45,000 sq. ft. main assembly building at its facility in Bridgeport, Conn., marking the completion of the second building on this 23-acre site, which is part of the development of the Bridgeport Regional Maritime Complex in Bridgeport Harbor. The new main assembly building consists of one 300 x 100 x 75 ft. (clear height) assembly bay and one 300 x 50 x 50 ft. (91.4 x 30.4 x 22.8 m) (clear height) assembly bay. This assembly building is the first of two main assembly halls to be constructed on the site which will provide a total of 168,000 sq.

East Coast: Derecktor: Bridgeport Expansion Opens Opportunities

Derecktor Shipbuilding has quietly gone about the business of building great boats, generally eschewing bold press headlines along the way. Derecktor Eyes Military Deal

Derecktor Shipyards could be building high-speed ferries for the U.S. military in Bridgeport if it and its partners can edge out some tough competition for what could be a $234m defense contract. Exactly how many consortiums have bid on the Joint High Speed Vessel for the Army and Navy is unclear. Only two groups have verified they are going after the contract to develop a completely new vessel for the Navy. Derecktor and its partners, Maersk Line Ltd., which is the U.S. subsidiary of Dutch A.P. Moller Maersk Group, and naval architects Gibbs & Cox confirmed they're in the contest this month. Louisiana-based Bollinger Shipyards Inc.

Derecktor’s Sala Moves On

After almost four years with Derecktor Shipyards, Enrico Sala is following his family in its move back to Europe. He will be working with the Italian Challenge for the next America’s Cup and we are certainly excited for him at the idea. As marketing manager Enrico handled all our image promotion, advertising, public relations with media, industry and clients relations as well as trade shows exhibits and attendance. He also coordinated all yacht bids and yacht sales and contracts, besides taking care of Derecktor’s Internet needs and web presence.

The State of Delaware Division of Fish & Wildlife took delivery of “First State” to replace their current Fisheries Research Vessel, a hundred-year -old converted wooden sailboat. The new 62 ft. Derecktor Shipyards has launched a new high-speed 149.6 ft. catamaran passenger ferry for the Argentinean Company, Buquebus. Capable of operating speeds in excess of 52 knots, when fully loaded, this new vessel becomes the fastest passenger ferry of its class in the world. Derecktor engineers work with the ferry operator, helping evaluate which vessel design best suits its application, based on passenger capacity, speed, length of route, prevailing sea conditions and operating cost. Derecktor and Alaska Government Officials Sign Contract

Paul Derecktor, Alaska Governor Tony Knowles, State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joe Perkins and several Alaska State Officials were in attendance last week at the State Capitol in Juno, for the signature of the contract that entrusts Derecktor Shipyards with the construction of two new high-speed ferries for the Alaska Marine Highway System. This contract will be the first time a U.S. yard builds passenger-vehicle high-speed ferries. Until now the domain of overseas shipbuilders, the passenger-vehicle high-speed ferries have proven their worth in many countries around the world. The Jones Act requires that these boats servicing U.S. waters be built in the US.

Derecktor Awarded High Speed Ferry Contracts

Derecktor Shipyards won the contract for the construction of the first two passenger /vehicle high-speed ferries for the State of Alaska's Marine Highway System. The NGA design presented by Derecktor competed in a bid race that lasted several months and ended with the notice of intent to award going to Derecktor Shipyards. This project, funded by the Federal Government, allows the State of Alaska to link Sitka to Juneau with fast modern boats, capable of a one-day round trip. The Alaska Marine Highway System has been operating year-round since 1963, with regularly scheduled passenger and vehicle service to 32 communities in Alaska. It carries more than 300,000 passengers every year. The new boats are designed by Nigel Gee and Associates (NGA) Ltd.

Decktor Shipyard Wins Contract For Two Pilot Boats

Derecktor Shipyards signed a contract with the New York/New Jersey Sandy Hook Pilots Association for the construction of two all aluminum fast pilot boats. The two vessels will be built according to plans by Camarc Small Craft Designs of Worthing, U.K. in Derecktor's Mamaroneck, N.Y. facility. Delivery is scheduled for fall 2000. The Sandy Hook Pilots serve the port of New York, the busiest commercial port in the U.S. They operate four boats from a stationary mother ship anchored near Ambrose Lighthouse in open waters and in a rough environment. "The Sandy Hook Pilots wanted a safe, reliable boat with superior ride comfort," said Gavin Higgins, general manager of Derecktor Shipyards.
