China’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Passenger Catamaran Launched

China’s first hydrogen fuel cell powered boat “Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat No. 1” has been launched in Guangdong.“Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat No. 1” is a 164 foot long, 33 foot wide passenger catamaran capable of reaching a maximum speed of 17 miles/hr. It is powered by a 500 kW hydrogen fuel cell with a 1,800 kWh lithium battery system and has a range of 124 miles. DNV GL Offshore Wind Standard for China

DNV GL is part of the consortium selected by the World Bank to support the development of 3 new standards in offshore wind turbine support structures, offshore substations, offshore wind farm power cables. DNV GL will also be advising the Chinese government on project financing and risk management as part of this project. “Offshore Wind is a very demanding technology. BV Classes Mega Asphalt Carrier

Classification society Bureau Veritas is classing the 37,000 dwt asphalt carrier Asphalt Splendor, recently delivered to U.S.-based Sargeant Marine. The vessel was built at Avic Dingheng, China and is one of a series of two designed by Chinese design institute SDARI in cooperation with Sargeant. The hot asphalt can be carried liquid at temperatures up to 170 deg C in sixteen independent tanks with a total capacity of 35,666 cu m. SENER holds a FORAN seminar in Wuhan, China

The ‘FORAN new modules, new functions and FEM-Link (Hypermesh) Seminar’ was held on April 23rd in Wuhan. SENER is playing a big role in China, where it has been promoting the FORAN System for many years.Through the seminar, important new enhancements in its shipbuilding CAD/CAM System FORAN, SENER (Shanghai) hopes to bolster confidence of existing customers and arouse more interest among the potential customers for FORAN system. Xinlin Zhou presented the FORAN FGA/FBASIC modules, functions and hull capabilities of new release V70R3.0. The paper introduced general arrangement drawings using FGA modules and naval architecture calculations using FBASIC module.

SDARI Inks Agreement for INTERSCHALT Loading Software

INTERSCHALT maritime systems AG, a maritime software and services provider of loading computers on board containerships, signed a cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI) in Shanghai for the provision of MACS3 loading software for containerships, bulk carriers and tankers built in Chinese shipyards using SDARI designs. MACS3 provides INTERSCHALT with an approx. 65% market share of the approx. 6,000 container ships currently in existence worldwide.

China’s Wuhan Ship Development and Design Institute (WSDDI) extended its FORAN contract with SENER. At the end of December 2014, WSDDI signed a contract with SENER’s partner in Beijing, United Force Corporation (UFC), about additional licenses of FORAN system and relevant services. China Shipyards Benefit from Lomar Fleet Expansion

Lomar informs it has declared a further three options to build new container vessels at Chinese shipyards, which brings the total number of newbuilding orders in hand to over 20 ships. The company has declared its final two options in a total order for six 1,100 TEU container vessels from the Yangzijiang shipyard. They are designed by leading Chinese design institute SDARI (Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute) and have much improved fuel consumption and the ability to carry up to 220 reefer containers.

Ship Performance Monitoring: SDARI & NAPA to Collaborate

Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI), the leading ship design company in China and NAPA, the global leader in maritime software solutions and services for ship design and operations, have agreed to expand their co-operation to cover ship performance monitoring. The enhanced agreement will extend an existing co-operation that includes the application of NAPA software to SDARI’s ship design processes and NAPA’s Loading Computer, which enhances safe operation and maximisation of a vessel’s cargo carriage capacity. Ship performance monitoring has been added to partnership’s scope in response to a shift in focus in the maritime industry from capital expenditure costs to operating costs, amid sustained high bunker prices.

Deck Cargo Barge for SE Asian Routes

The Hangzhou Dongfeng Shipbuilding yard is busy with multiple projects in their yard. In addition to a series of patrol vessels they are building a number of coastal ships and barges. Established in 1978 the yard covers an area of 70,000 square meters and is fronted by 400 meters of deep-water pier face. Facilities and equipment includes a 140 by 38-meter slipway, a 100-ton crane, plasma numerical controlled cutting machine, submerged arc automatic welding machinery, 160 ton hydraulic pressure and a 20-inch pipe bending machine in addition to plate bending machines. The yard can build vessels up to 20,000 DWT. The shipyard has built a wide range of vessels to class from container and bulk cargo ships to tugs and hovercraft.

New Pilot Boats for Chinese

On June 16 Zhang Guangqin, Vice Minister of the Commission of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defence --- a body set up by the Chinese central government to oversee China’s ship building industries --- announced that there would be a 14 percent increase in production from China’s yards in 2004. This would bring the country’s production to 10 million deadweight tons this year, compared with 8.8 million tons in 2004. He went on to say that Chinese yards earned nearly US$3.2 billion on the export of 5.6 million deadweight tons of vessels in 2004. This represents 70% of total construction. The balance of 30% was made of up ships and boats for domestic use. These include everything from crude oil carriers to naval ships and workboats.

New Century Shipbuilding Acquires AVEVA Solution

AVEVA, a supplier of engineering IT solutions for the process, power, and marine industries, signed a contract to provide its design and production solutions to New Century Shipbuilding (NCS). The contract means that two of the fastest-developing, non state-owned, local shipbuilding forces in China have now signed up to and are benefitting from AVEVA’s marine solutions. NCS, located southeast of Jingjiang, will utilise AVEVA’s software to enhance its shipbuilding capabilities on its latest project – the design and manufacture of a 4250TEU Container Ship prototype, for which delivery is expected in 2007. The software will enable NCS to improve its design processes, precision management, and coordination between hull, outfitting, design and fabrication. Mr.
