Sulzer Acquires License for Total’s Wash Tank Technology

(Image: Sulzer)

Sulzer’s Chemtech division has been granted a license covering the Total-patented Wash Tank Technology for Oil Processing. The main purpose of this technology is to enhance the removal of water, salt and contaminants from oil and emulsions, by a controlled distribution of the feed into the bottom of a hull tank of an FPSO/FSO/FPU which transforms the water-in-oil dispersion into an oil-in-water one where high efficiency phase separation takes place more easily. The technology also involves a simplification of the topsides crude oil process.

Marine Battery Systems Come of Age

Saft’s Seanergy Marine Battery System offers a different way forward in the quest for reduced emissions in marine propulsion. Discovering new means to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiencies are top-of-mind for all companies in today’s day and age. The Paris Climate Deal, initiated nearly a year ago, is just one example of the world coming together to combat global warming. In the marine industry, operating with clean propulsion is a crucial goal for all parties involved, from navies, designers and shipyards to original equipment manufacturers (OEMS) and battery suppliers.

Cathodic Protection

Vessels that operate across the globe in waters of varying levels of salinity and temperature are susceptible to corrosion damage. For example, localized pitting can occur on steel or aluminium hull plates and result in the complete penetration of the hull below the waterline. This can render a vessel unseaworthy, meaning it could require drydocking for unscheduled and costly maintenance. Cathodic protection (CP) is a proven, cost-effective and efficient corrosion mitigation solution and is central to almost every hull design.

Stauff ACT Clamp Also Available In the Twin Series Design

Award-winning Stauff ACT Clamp prevents the formation of crevice corrosion under the clamp body.

In order to complete the product portfolio and fulfil customers’ requirements, the Stauff ACT Clamp – recently awarded by the U.S. American NACE International association with a prestigious Corrosion Innovation of the Year Award – will also be available in the Twin Series design from the fourth quarter of 2012 on. The new twin clamp allows for the simple, fast and secure fastening of two parallel running pipes with standard diameters from 6 mm to 25.4 mm (from 1/4 inch to 1 inch).

Cargo Handling: Molten Sulphur Tanker Sails Four Years Sans Freeze-Ups

The operator of the world’s largest and most modern molten sulphur tanker has enjoyed four years of near-continuous service, thanks in part to the ship’s innovative thermal maintenance system. Sulphur Carriers, Inc., a subsidiary of International Shipholding Corporation, keeps M/V Sulphur Enterprise at sea hauling around 24,000 long tons of molten sulphur per trip. “We’ve had zero freeze-ups and zero maintenance associated with the bolt-on piping and valve heating system,” says Peter Johnston, Sulphur Carriers’ VP of operations. For reportedly the first time on any sulphur transport ship, a bolt-on heating system keeps the molten cargo flowing and the ship on schedule by preventing costly delays due to frozen pipes and valves.
