Grand Bahama Shipyard has received Certification to verify that it recently successfully completeda "Liquid Natural Gas Carrier " training and familiarisation programme run by Det Norske Veritas. Aware of the special features of LNG Carriers and the specific requirements that they have during their dry-docking and repair programmes, the shipyard commissioned DNV to devise a customised course to address all the issues that arise with these Specialised Vessels.
Container Ship Launched
A 53,000-ton container ship, named Dinamod 53, was launched on June 13 by the Nam Trieu Shipbuilding Industry Company in northern Hai Phong city. The Dinamod 53, the biggest ever built in Vietnam at a total cost of $29m, is 190 m long and 32.26 m wide. The ship was built on an advanced production line under the supervision of the Det Norske Veritas (DNV), a leading international certification body. Siemens-Schottel Gains Worldwide Approval
The Siemens-Schottel Propulsor Consortium (SSRP) was granted approval for the new SSP marine propulsion. After more than two years of development, Det Norske Veritas was responsible for technical acceptance of the propulsion system for worldwide service. The propulsor, which is a so-called "pod type" propulsion system that offers both technological and economic advantages via an electronic motor housed in a pod or nacelle suspended beneath the hull of a vessel - providing direct drive to a propeller. The unit outputs a power of 7 MW, corresponding to 9,510-hp.

Marinette Marine Corporation, announced certification of their Quality Management System to the ISO 9001:2008 International Standard by Det Norske Veritas Certification, Inc. Recognition for Lloyd Triestino
The Italian container shipping line Lloyd Triestino di Navigazione SpA has taken a major step forward in gearing itself for further expansion. Its management and operational standards have been approved as conforming to the international quality management system standard ISO 9001:2000. The standard, introduced at the end of last year, is designed to ensure that companies focus their management systems on meeting the needs and service requirements of their customers. The assessment, which was conducted by Det Norske Veritas, specifically relates to Lloyd Triestino?s business as a provider of intermodal liner services with full container vessels. The formal presentation of the certificate took place in Trieste at the company"s headquarters on September 25.
CENTA authorized for In-House Testing
CENTA is the first company worldwide to which Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has conferred the responsibility for alternative product certification of type-approved couplings. In the future, CENTA will have the authority to carry out acceptance testing and final stamping of those couplings that have previously been classified as approved types. These tests must be performed in accordance with the “Alternative Product Certification,” a modular certification system developed by Germanischer Lloyd (GL). The approval becomes valid by their joint signatures on the appropriate product certificate. MDI RCA and Autopilot Secures Bureau Veritas Approval
Fast ferry and military craft motion control specialists, Maritime Dynamics, Inc. (MDI), have added Bureau Veritas to the classification approvals for their Ride Control System with Autopilot. MDI, part of the U.K.’s vosper Thorncroft Group, already has approval form Det Norske Veritas and the American Bureau of Shipping for its RCS and Autopilot. The RCS monitors vessel attitude and automatically positions effectors to reduce accelerations arising from pitch, roll and heave motions. The additional MDI integrated autopilote provides commands to the vessel’s steering system to dampen yaw motions and provide heading control. Over 100MDI RCS have been supplied to fast craft throughout the world.
Vacon Receives Type Approvals
The Finland-based AC drives manufacturer Vacon has received a type approval for marine use from the Norwegian certification body Det Norske Veritas (DNV). Earlier, Vacon received a type approval from the French certification body Bureau Veritas (BV). These approvals apply to Vacon's NXL, NXS and NXP ranges of AC drives. Vacon has delivered AC drives to control e.g. main propulsion, thrusters, steering gear as well as drawworks, topdrives, rotary tables and various types of winches. MMK Boosts Steel Shipments to Shipbuilders
OJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) supplied 78,000 metric tons of metal products to shipbuilders in 2014, which represents a 37.2% growth year-on-year. MMK supplies up to half of all metal products sold to the Russian shipbuilding industry. Key customers of MMK include companies that are part of such groups as United Shipbuilding Corporation, Oka Shipyard, and Red Barricades Shipbuilding Plant. MMK production of steel for the shipbuilding industry has been expanded following the commissioning of the thick plate Mill 5000 in 2009. The thick plate mill can produce steel used in production for the Russian naval fleet, tankers, modern ice-class vessels.

HB Rentals Major Norway Contract & Fleet Investment
Offshore accommodation specialist HB Rentals has secured a contract for four modules offshore Norway and announced a significant investment in its fleet. HB Rentals has agreed a long-term lease contract with Prosafe to supply four 20 ft by 8 ft A60 Zone II Norsok office modules for the Valhall platform in a $385,600 deal. The company has invested a further $771,300 in a fleet of brand new 20 ft by 8 ft A60 Zone II Norsok compliant modules for use as offices, laboratories and drilling/well services support cabins.

Norway Funds Shipbuilding Training Program
Norway has committed some $4m in grants to aid Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry in human resource development over the course of the next three years, VNA reported. A deal was signed in Hanoi, on May 21, to seal the decision during a visit by Norwegian State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anne Stenhammer. An amount of $1.84m is to be funded by Norway's Government, while Det Norske Veritas, Hoegh Autoliners and Jotun Paint, three of Norway's leading shipbuilders, will finance the remainder. The project aims to equip the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin) with new skills relating to shipbuilding management and quality control.

MITAGS Completes Annual DNV Audit
Glen Paine, Executive Director of the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS), announced the successful completion of MITAGS’ annual Det Norske Veritas (DNV) audit.
