Dredging of the Rogue River at Gold Beach, Ore. is scheduled to begin in June, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.In March, Army officials announced the Corps had awarded a $5.3 million contract to Tacoma, Wash.-based American Construction for the dredging operations. Kvaerner has entered into an agreement with Allseas for the recycling of the topside and bridge of the 36-year-old Valhall QP platform when Allseas removes this installation for operator Aker BP in 2019. The structures will be deconstructed during winter 2019 and spring 2020. Kvaerner has also signed a contract with Saipem Uk for disposal of the Varg A installation. Saipem will remove the installation from the field on behalf of Repsol. Varg A was originally  delivered by Kvaerner’s yard in Verdal, Norway in 1997. The topsides, mono-tower, piles and various ancillaries will be delivered to Kvaerner’s disposal site at Stord during the summer of 2018 for deconstruction and recycling.

The almost 100-year old firm has many specialties, including the ability to construct innovative, complicated tonnage for its own purposes. The slowdown in barge construction in some sectors hasn’t dampened the need for specialty barges in other areas. In many cases, these mission requirements can involve the repurposing of existing tonnage using sometimes innovative and unusual design parameters. Such was the case when Cranford, NJ-based Weeks Marine (WMI) completed the conversion of an existing ABS deck barge into a loadline compliant, semi-submersible, all self-contained unit. Its first assignment involved transit to Canada for the launching of concrete caissons in Halifax, Nova Scotia for a new pier.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed to designate a dredged material disposal site to serve the eastern Long Island Sound region. The Eastern Long Island Sound Disposal Site (ELDS) would be located offshore from New London, Conn., and would be available for the disposal of dredged material from harbors and navigation channels in eastern Long Island Sound in the states of Connecticut and New York. A damaged dry dock vessel has been removed from Honolulu Harbor last month after electrical problems caused the vessel to sink in September 2015, the Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced. The dry dock, named Kapilipono, took on water and sunk in its berth on September 9, 2015 due to an electrical malfunction. In the following months, recovery plans were activated, the water was removed and the vessel was refloated in January. Kapilipono was fully cleaned of any and all petroleum products, and all cargo holds, tanks, voids and bilges were emptied as verified by the U.S.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing to amend its 2005 rule that designated the Central and Western Long Island Sound Dredged Material Disposal Sites. The proposed amendments will help meet the goal of reducing or eliminating dredged material disposal in open waters of the Sound. These amendments are available for public review and comment through March 25, 2016, and the EPA will also hold two public hearings on the proposed amendments in early March. According to the EPA…

A recommended $73 million plan to deepen the Redwood City Harbor and San Bruno Shoal channels, the navigation corridors essential for commerce and the Port of Redwood City, has been issued  in draft by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers' San Francisco District. The port is conducting a public hearing on what is called the "Redwood City Navigation Improvement Project" August 10 at 7 p.m. at Redwood City Hall to allow public comment and recommendations on the project's Draft Feasibility Study and Environment Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report.

Port Manatee’s Berth 12 dredging project – the final piece of the Tampa Bay port’s 11-year, $200 million expansion – enters its third week with 25 percent of the project complete. Port of Houston Authority Chairman James T. Edmonds has declined a suggestion by Galveston Bay Conservation and Preservation Association Chairman James Blackburn that the Port adopt one of two alternative sites in place of the Port's proposed Bayport location for a new Houston area container terminal. "Bayport is the right location for the Port's proposed container and cruise terminal, environmentally, financially and socially," Edmonds told Blackburn. In a meeting on Thursday, Blackburn proposed that Spilman Island and Texas City would be better locations for the new container facility. Edmonds described both alternatives as impractical.
