Horizon To Construct Z-Drive Tug

Horizon Shipbuilding formalized a contract with Dixie Towing, Jacksonville, Fla. for the construction of a 70 ft. (21.3 m) Z-drive tug. Designed exclusively for Dixie by Glowacki Engineering, also of Jacksonville, tug is scheduled for a fall 2000 delivery. The company is also involved in constructed a 135 ft. (41.1 m) dinner cruise vessel and a series of 28 ft. (8.5 m) fiberglass tow targets for the U.S. Navy.

Horizon Delivers New Z-drive Tug For Dixie Towing

Horizon Shipbuilding of Bayou La Batre, Ala., delivered a Cummins-powered Z-drive tug to Dixie Towing of Jacksonville Florida on January 12, 2001. The 70 x 26-ft. boat is powered by a pair of Cummins KTA19 M3 engines rated for 500 hp each at 1,800 rpm. The engines turn Ustein-Aquamaster 370H Z-drives with 52-in.(1321 m/m) propeller diameters. Dixie Towing owner Robert Gibbs explains that the new boat, named M/V Belle Watling, was nearly two years in planning. Working with Jacksonville based naval architect Ed Glowacki, Gibbs settled on an azimuthing stern Z-drive design for its versatility. The original plans for a 24-ft. beam on the hard chine hull was broadened to 26 ft. in order to achieve the nine-foot draft limit of much of the Intercoastal Waterway.

Horizon Delivers Azimuthing Tug

Horizon Shipbuilding, Inc. recently delivered Belle Watling, a 72-ft. Z-drive tug to Dixie Towing of Jacksonville, Fla. The tug was delivered 30 days ahead of its contractual delivery date. Belle Watling is the first azimuthing tug to be built by the Bayou La Batre shipyard. Glowacki Engineering of Jacksonville provided the contract design for Dixie Towing. Detail design was completed by Horizon’s design staff. The boat features a separate engine control room forward of the engine room. The Glowacki design provides for good deck stowage space and stowage below deck. The pilothouse is designed for 360-degree visibility and for working under a bow overhang when engaged in docking operations. The narrow pilothouse width is designed to enhance alongside and docking operations.

Teche towing Repowers with Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi heavy-duty marine propulsion engines are designed to withstand the rigors of commercial use. So, when Teche Towing owner Joey Carbonell wanted to re-power his 55-ft. tugboat, Dixie, with a tough engine, Mitsubishi distributor Laborde Products provided a S6R-MPTA. Headquartered in Berwick, Louisiana, Teche Towing services drilling rigs. Constructed by Albert Ortis Boat Builders, the Dixie is used for inland towing and oil field assistance. This is the second boat Teche has re-powered with a Mitsubishi engine. The 4-cycle, watercooled, turbocharged diesel engine delivers 590 hp at 1,600 rpm. With economic operation and easy maintenance, the in-line, 6-cylinder S6R-MPTA provides a total displacement of 24.5 L.

Intercoastal Waterway Reopens After Collision

The U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port for the Houston/Galveston area informs that a 2-mile stretch of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway between between Bolivar Peninsula and Goat Island has been reopened after a pleasure craft sank in the channel following a collision. The captain of the towing vessel Dixie Courage contacted Coast Guard Sector Houston/Galveston, 1 p.m. Sunday, reporting that his tow and barges had collided with a disabled and adrift 15-foot pleasure craft. The four people aboard the boat jumped overboard and swam to shore before the collision occurred. There were no reports of injuries to either crew or any reports of pollution. The captain of the Dixie Courage reported no damage to the tow boat, but the pleasure craft sank from the damage it sustained.

Collision on Mississippi River, Pollution Incident

The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to a report of acrylonitrile in the Mississippi River, near mile marker 775.5, one mile north of the Hachie River inlet. At approximately 9 p.m., July 26, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Lower Mississippi River received a report from the master of the Merrick Jones, a 128-ft towing vessel pushing 26 barges, that a collision had occurred involving the Merrick Jones and the Dixie Express, an 87-ft towing barge pushing two barges of acrylonitrile. A marine and pollution investigation team from Sector Lower Mississippi River were dispatched to assess the incident. An unknown amount of acrylonitrile was released into the water after one of the barges being pushed by the Dixie Express was damaged in the incident. The source of the spill has been secured.

Dixie Legacy features a number of technical innovations and amenities that should secure its profitable and successful future for many years to come.

Port Arthur Vessel Collision

The Coast Guard and agency partners have formed a Unified Command in response to an oil spill in the Port of Port Arthur, on Jan. 23. Vessel Traffic Service Port Arthur received notification at 9:30 a.m. reporting a collision between the towing vessel Dixie Vengeance and the two barges it was pushing, and the 807-ft tank ship Eagle Otome. As a result of the collision, the Eagle Otome sustained damage in the vicinity of the number one starboard tank, which was reported to be loaded with crude oil. The initial estimate of spilled oil is 450,000 gallons.

Unified Command Responds to Port Arthur Spill

At 12:17 a.m. Jan. 24, the Dixie Vengeance and two barges were separated from the Eagle Otome and moored on the east bank of the Sabine Neches Waterway. The Unified Command continues to respond to the spill, ensuring the safety of the public and minimizing environmental impact. Currently 11 skimmers are conducting operations and air monitoring is on-going. A collision between the towing vessel Dixie Vengeance with the two barges it was pushing, and the 807-ft tank ship Eagle Otome, resulted in damage to the Eagle Otome, which was loaded with crude oil. Merger's Goal: Improved Efficiency

Kirby Corp, the largest U.S. tank barge operator, has agreed to buy Hollywood Marine Inc., an inland tank barge company based in Houston, for approximately $325 million. Kirby, also based in Houston, said the purchase price consists of $90 million in stock, $135 million in cash and the assumption or refinancing of about $100 million of Hollywood debt. "Hollywood's operations are complementary to our core inland tank barge operation and are an excellent fit within Kirby's strategy of growing our core businesses through synergistic acquisitions," Kirby CEO and President J.H. Custom Mud Cat Dredge to Improve Boise Watershed

Ellicott Dredge Technologies (EDT) informed that the City of Boise, Idaho chose it to design a Mud Cat 40E Custom (MC-40EC) dredge for the city's innovative Dixie Drain Phosphorous Offset Project. Boise will use the MC-40EC dredge to remove phosphorous from the Boise Watershed. Boise selected the MC-40EC due to Mud Cat’s global reputation for quality and their proven ability to deliver custom features. Semco Completes World’s Largest Liftboat

Semco Shipyard recently completed the M/V Dixie Legacy, a 250-ft. leg liftboat for Power Offshore Service, the first in a series of liftboats under construction for Power Offshore Service of Belle Chasse, La. The vessel will be used as a support platform from which various oil and gas industry activities can be performed, including activities such as coiled tubing, hydraulic snubbing, nitrogen stimulation, drilling, plug and abandonment, construction, facility installation or removal and diving. Dixie Legacy, the largest liftboat in the world, features a number of technical innovations both evident and unseen, but its greatest assets are immediately evident upon first laying eyes on the boat: its cranes, its deck area and its legs.

One Person Missing After Boat Capsized

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for one person who ended up in the Pungo River near Hobucken, N.C. after a boat capsized. The 21-foot TowBoatUS vessel was towing a 47-foot recreational boat when the lead vessel capsized near the river entrance Thursday morning. Officials say and they are now searching the water for a 45-year-old TowBoatUS captain reported to be wearing coveralls, rubber boots and a lifejacket. Coast Guard crews aboard a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium and helicopter are searching on scene along with state and local partners…

OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design

Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.

Sabine-Neches Waterway Open, Limited Traffic

The Unified Command, consisting of the Texas General Land Office, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Eagle Otome's owner, opened the Sabine-Neches Waterway on Jan. 27 to limited traffic after moving the tank vessel Eagle Otome to the Sunoco oil terminal in Beaumont on the evening of Jan. 26. "The Unified Command has been working closely to get the waterway back open as safely as possible," said Coast Guard Capt. J.J. Plunkett, captain of the port and federal on-scene coordinator for the response. Three tugs escorted the Eagle Otome, while two boats carried boom to prevent further spillage and a fire fighting barge was on scene to prevent any fires. Two pilots were on board the ship to further ensure its safe transit to Beaumont.

Feature:SEMCO Builds World's Largest Liftboat

Lift boats are the unglamorous vessels of oil and gas well servicing industry. They travel to the job site with three large cylindrical legs rising 150-250 ft. above the waterline. Once onsite, lift boats lower their legs to the seabed and raise their hull up to 100 ft. above the waterline to be even with the structure they are servicing to provide a stable platform for workers to transit from the lift boat to the project in which they are working. These versatile vessels can serve through the entire life of a oil or gas well from driving casing to provide a "path" for a jackup rig to drill through construction of the platform, repair and renovation of the platform to plug and abandonment of the well.

A Quality Blend

A recent clutch of 'Rolls-Royce' shipboard equipment and technology contracts in Norway arising out of specialized, capital-intensive newbuild projects testified to the U.K. group's march into the commercial marine domain. For sure, the emergence of the engineering group's name in new mercantile circles is the outcome of last year's acquisition of Vickers, and its Vickers-Ulstein Marine division, rather than the result of U.K. home-grown product diversification. But the new proprietor of the former Ulstein and Vickers' interests intends to build on the platform and integrated system opportunities offered by ownership of the industry's most extensive global network of marine equipment production.

Laborde Powers Smith Maritime

Smith Maritime was contracted by a Nigerian company to deliver a 200' lift boat for oil field maintenance. Smith Maritime selected the 5,000 hp tug Rhea and 400' barge Atlanta Bridge for the voyage. The barge was equipped with pumps to allow for controlled sinking and recovery in order to float the lift boat on and off. But they ran into a hitch. Shortly before departing, Smith Maritime discovered the African port was unable to furnish power for the pumps. Within hours Smith Maritime received delivery of a 60 kW Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT, formerly Iveco) diesel generator from Laborde.

NTSB Issues Report on 2016 Columbia River Bulker Grounding

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a report on its investigation into the November 2016 grounding of the bulk carrier Nenita in the Columbia River. The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel was fully laden when it suffered an engine failure that impacted its ability to maneuver and subsequently ran aground at Three Tree Point on the Washington State side of the river. The ship’s bulbous bow and hull were damaged, but no injuries or pollution were reported. The vessel was towed to Longview, Wash.
