The UK Emissions Trading Scheme Authority (UK ETS) – has announced that the scheme will be expanded to include domestic maritime transport from 2026.The scheme will be applicable to vessels of 5,000 gross tons or higher.The UK ETS is run by a joint body comprising the UK Government, Scottish Government, Welsh Government and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland.The UK ETS was launched in 2021 to replace the UK’s participation in the EU ETS.

Indonesia will not enforce new global rules mandating low-sulphur marine fuels on its domestic shipping fleet because of the high cost of cleaner fuel, an official from the country's Ministry of Transportation said this week.Under International Maritime Organization (IMO) rules that come into effect in 2020, ships will have to use fuel with a maximum 0.5% sulphur content, down from 3.5% now, unless they are equipped with so-called scrubbers to remove the sulphur from the vessel's emissions.But because of the high cost of complying with new rules…

According to a new study conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) on behalf of Transportation Institute (TI), the Jones Act continues to fuel a strong maritime industry throughout the Great Lakes region, where the PwC report shows 123,670 Jones Act-related jobs – or 20% of the national total – are based.Between 2011 and 2016, maritime employment in the region increased by 25,400 jobs. Philippines' Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) is encouraging shipping companies to deploy ships to missionary routes to enhance the connectivity of the country’s islands.Marina opened new roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) missionary routes for application by shipping operators, in line with its initiative to modernize domestic shipping in support of the development of a national nautical highway system in the Philippines.“The Marina declared 19 missionary routes on 31 January 2019 to further connect various islands between the Central Nautical Highway to the Eastern Nautical Highway or from the Western Nautical Highway to the Central Nautical Highway.

The government of India has revised guidelines for chartering of ships by providing the right-of-first-refusal (RoFR) to ships built within the country, a move to promote the Make in India initiative and incentivise shipbuilding activity.Henceforth, whenever a tendering process is undertaken to charter a vessel, a bidder offering a ship built in India will be given the first priority to match the L1 quote. It is expected that this priority given to ships built in India will raise the demand for such vessels, providing them with additional market access and business support.Prior to the revision of the guidelines, the RoFR was reserved for Indian flag vessels as per the relevant provisions of Merchant Shipping Act, 1958.
