GlobalSantaFe Orders New Ultra-Deepwater Drillship

GlobalSantaFe's new ultra-deepwater drillship, to be constructed in Ulsan, Korea, by Hyundai Heavy Industries for delivery in 2010. Maersk Drilling Bags Contract with Tullow Ghana

Maersk Drilling has been awarded a four year contract for the deep-water drillship Maersk Venturer by Tullow Ghana Ltd. The contract, which was signed December 2017, is expected to commence in February 2018 and covers development drilling on the Jubilee and TEN fields offshore Ghana. Maersk Venturer is currently in transit for the job offshore Ghana thereby further strengthening Maersk Drilling’s presence in the region. ”I am very pleased that Maersk Drilling will be mobilising another deepwater rig for this significant job in a strategically important region.

Keppel Awarded Contract for Bully Drillship

Keppel Shipyard Limited was awarded a contract valued at about $100.7m for the integration and completion of a new build Bully drillship. Keppel secured the contract with a company jointly owned by Frontier Drilling and Shell. This is the second drillship of the Bully rig design awarded to Keppel by the same owners. The first Bully drillship was awarded in June 2007 with delivery by fourth quarter 2009. The new hull will be built in China and is due to arrive at Keppel Shipyard in the first quarter of 2009. The drillship is expected to be delivered by the second quarter of 2010. The Bully drillships are designed to conduct surface BOP (Blow-out Preventer) drilling operations in water depths of up to 12,000 ft. and sub-sea BOP operations in water depths of up to 8,250 ft.

SHI South Korea Yard to Build Two Ultra-deep Drillships for Seadrill

Seadrill has entered into turnkey contracts to build two new ultra-deepwater drillships at Samsung in South Korea. The construction of the drillships is scheduled for completion in the second and third quarter 2014. Total project price per drillship is estimated to be under US$600 million, which includes a turnkey contract with the yard, project management, drilling and handling tools, spares, capitalized interest and operations preparations. Seadrill has also a fixed price option to order an additional drillship for delivery in 2014. The drillships are of the same design as the three previous dual derrick drillships that Seadrill ordered at Samsung late 2010 and early 2011, with increased water depth, technical capabilities and accommodation capacities.

R&B Falcon Announces Deepwater Pathfinder Incident

R&B Falcon Corporation announced drillship Deepwater Pathfinder sustained damage when 20 joints of the vessel's riser and its blowout prevention equipment fell to the seabed in approximately 7,000 ft. of water while preparing to continue drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico offshore Louisiana. None of the personnel aboard the drillship sustained any injury. The drillship's top drive and travelling equipment sustained damage, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of damages sustained. The marine integrity of the drillship was not affected. No environmental damage resulted from the incident. Deepwater Pathfinder is operated under a long-term bareboat charter by Deepwater Drilling L.L.C., a limited liability company in which affiliates of Conoco Inc.

Keppel to Build New Drillship to its Proprietary Design

The CAN DO drillship will be the front runner in exploration, development and completion operations. Following positive feedback and strong enquiries from the market, Keppel FELS Ltd (Keppel FELS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd. (Keppel O&M), is proceeding with the building of its new CAN DO drillship. When completed in 2016, the drillship is expected to be a state-of-the-art deepwater exploration, development and completion drilling vessel. Chow Yew Yuen, Chief Operating Officer and CEO-Designate, Keppel O&M, commented, "As with all our market established proprietary designs, our new CAN DO drillship design was developed in close consultation with customers, major oil companies and vendors.

Ocean Rig buys Cerrado drillship

Cyprus-based Ocean Rig has stepped in to buy the sixth generation ultra-deepwater (UDW) drillship Cerrado, which once drilled the giant Libra prospect offshore Brazil, following its owner Brazil-based Schahin Group bankruptcy declaration last April. Ocean Rig paid US$65 million at auction for the UDW drillship. The drillship was built at Samsung Heavy Industries in 2011 to similar design specifications as the company’s existing 6th generation drillships built at Samsung, and will be renamed the Ocean Rig Paros upon its delivery to Ocean Rig.

$630m Drill Ship is Korea's Most Expensive Ship

The most expensive ship among the orders Korean shipbuilders have won this year is a $630m drill ship. Samsung Heavy Industries won a contract from Sweden in October to build the 97,000-ton drill ship, which is 228 m long and 19 m tall. In terms of price, the ship costs the equivalent of five 300,000-ton crude oil carriers (VLCCs) or two or three LNG ships. The next most expensive orders were also for drill ships, worth $550-590 million in second to fifth, which were won by Samsung Heavy Industries from European countries including Norway. Excluding drill ships, a $284 million LNG ship is the most expensive order, won by Samsung Heavy Industries from Qatar in March.

ABB Wins Offshore Contracts of $150m

ABB, a power and automation technology group, recently won six contracts collectively worth more than $150m to supply main electrical systems for drilling rigs and drill-ships built in Asia. The orders were booked during the third quarter of 2008. Among the new orders are three deepwater drilling rigs now under construction at the Jurong Shipyard in Singapore, two drill-ships (Stena DrillMAX ICE and the Pride #4 drill-ship) to be built at Samsung Heavy Industries and another drill-ship for Metrostar to be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Korea. Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division attributes the recent commercial success to the group’s global strategy.

Fatality on Drillship in Gulf of Mexico

The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is responding to a report of a fatality on a drillship in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) approximately 200 miles south of Lake Charles, LA, in 4,800 feet of water. The Pacific Santa Ana drillship was beginning drilling operations for Chevron. According to the operator, operations on the drillship have been shut down. There were no other injuries reported and personnel remain on the drill ship. There was no reported pollution. BSEE and U.

Ultra-deepwater Drillship Contract for HHI

Rowan Companies exercises option to build a fourth GustoMSC P10,000 design ultra-deepwater drillship with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. The cost for this rig, including commissioning, project management and spares, but excluding capitalized interest, is estimated to be approximately $620 million, with delivery scheduled for March 2015. Rowan plans to equip its drillships with 2,000 feet of additional riser to enable operations in water depths up to 12,000 feet upon delivery. Each drillship will also be equipped with a second BOP for minimizing non-productive time. The company will also incur operational training and personnel ramp-up costs in readying the drillships to commence well operations.

FOE and KNOC in Deal for Drillship

According to Rigzone, Fred Olsen Energy ASA (FOE) has entered into an agreement of intent with the Korean state owned oil company, Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) of South Korea, to request proposals for the construction of a jointly owned new-build ultra deepwater drillship. FOE's wholly owned subsidiary, Dolphin Drilling Ltd., will in case of realizing the project, undertake the technical and commercial operation of the drillship. R&B Falcon Drillship Sustains Damage

R&B Falcon's drillship Deepwater Pathfinder sustained damage recently when 20 joints of the vessel's riser and its blowout prevention equipment fell to the seabed in about 7,000 ft. (2,133 m) of water while preparing to continue drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico offshore Louisiana. None of the personnel onboard was injured, but the drillship's top drive and traveling equipment was damaged. A full investigation is currently underway to decipher the full extent of the accident.

Drillship Contracts Worth US$4-billion Awarded to Sembcorp

Sembcorp Marine secures US$ 4.032 Billion drillship contracts from Sete Brasil. Sembcorp Marine Ltd, through Jurong Offshore Pte Ltd’s wholly-owned subsidiarieshas secured contracts from Sete Brasil Participacǒes S.A. (Sete Brasil), for the design and construction of five drillships based on Jurong Shipyard’s proprietary Jurong Espadon drillship design. In addition to the above, Sembcorp Marine had earlier in the year announced that its wholly-owned Brazilian shipyard Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz Ltda secured a US$792.5 million contract for the design and construction of a drillship with Guarapari Drilling B.V., Netherlands, a subsidiary of Sete Brasil.

IHI Delivers Drillship Hull to Singapore

IHI Corporation (IHI) announced today that Drillship Hull for Singapore was delivered on December 17, which was constructed at IHI Aichi Works. Drillship is designed for the use in exploratory, completion and maintenance drilling of offshore oil and gas fields. The delivered Drillship Hull is with the length of 242 meters, breadth of 46 meters and depth of 19.6 meters. Drilling equipment will be installed on the Hull in Singapore and the Drillship will be completed after the commissioning.  

Transocean Forms JV for Two Drillships

Transocean Inc. announced that a subsidiary has exercised its option to purchase a 50 percent interest in a joint venture company with Pacific Drilling Limited. The joint venture company will own two ultra-deepwater Samsung-design drillships that are currently under construction in South Korea. Under the terms of an exclusive marketing agreement, the subsidiary has secured a long-term drilling commitment for the first joint venture drillship. The purchase price for Transocean's 50 percent interest in the joint venture and a promissory note issued by the joint venture was approximately $238 million, which represents half of the total costs incurred for the two joint venture drillships through the date of the option exercise.

DryShips: Ocean Rig Financing, Fleet and Contract Developments

DryShips Inc., a global provider of marine transportation services for drybulk and petroleum cargos, through its majority owned subsidiary, Ocean Rig UDW Inc., an offshore deepwater drilling service company, made several company announcements. Ocean Rig announced that it has signed a supplemental agreement to amend certain provisions in its $1.35 billion Senior Secured Facility dated February 28, 2013. Under the terms of the agreement, the existing dividend restriction of up to 50% of preceding fiscal year net income will be amended to apply on a cumulative basis from July 1, 2013 onwards (50% of cumulative net income and 100% of cumulative losses) and include a carve-out to pay additional dividends up to the higher of $150m and 5% of the Ocean Rig's net tangible assets.

Maersk Drilling’s fourth ultra deepwater drillship has been named in a ceremony held at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in Geoje-Si, South Korea. Lene Berg, wife of Gregers Kudsk, Vice President in Maersk Drilling, named the drillship 'Maersk Voyager'. Maersk Voyager is the fourth in a series of four ultra deepwater drillships. The four drillships were ordered in 2011 and represent a total investment of USD 2.6bn. This latest ultra-deepwater drillship is scheduled to be delivered from SHI in Q4 2014 and awaits first contract.

Pride's Deep Ocean Clarion Delivered

Pride International recently dedicated its ABS-classed deepwater drillship Deep Ocean Clarion at Samsung Heavy Industries Shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. This is the second of four new drillships for the deepwater drilling contractor. Its sister ship, the ABS-classed Deep Ocean Ascension was delivered in February 2010 and has been deployed to the Gulf of Mexico. The 96,000 dwt Deep Ocean Clarion is capable of dual drilling activity and can drill in water depths of up to 12,000 feet.

Ocean Rig Updates on Financing, Newbuildings & Contracts

The Company announced that it has signed a supplemental agreement to amend certain provisions in its $1.35b Senior Secured Facility dated February 28, 2013. “We are pleased that our syndicate of commercial banks and export credit agencies agreed to our request to amend certain provisions in their facility. The Company announced that on August 20, 2013, it successfully took delivery of its newbuilding drillship the Ocean Rig Mylos. The Ocean Rig Mylos is the first in the series of three 7th Generation Ultra Deepwater Drillships the Company expects to take delivery in 2013. The drillship is currently mobilizing to offshore Brazil and is expected to commence drilling operations under the 3-year drilling contract with Repsol Sinopec Brasil S.A. by November 2013.

DSME Wins New Drillship Order

DSME signed a contract with Atwood Oceanics, a U.S.-based ocean drilling company, for the construction of one drillship. This is the option of last year’s contract with a value of approximately $570 million and it will be delivered at the end of 2015. DSME and Atwood Oceanics also agreed in principle to an additional drillship contract. The newly ordered drillship is a DSME-12000 type drillship which was developed using DSME’s own technology. It is able to drill down to a maximum of 12km in water up 3,600m in depth and will possess dual derricks so pipe assembly work and drilling operations are possible at the same time. This will increase its effectiveness and reduce working hours by 25% when compared to a single derrick system.

Transocean Awarded Contracts for Drillship and Semisubmersible Rig

Transocean Awarded Contracts for Drillship and Semisubmersible Rig Transocean Inc. announced that Hydro has awarded the company a drilling contract for the construction of an enhanced Enterprise-class drillship plus a multi-year contract award for the High-Specification semisubmersible rig Henry Goodrich. Combined revenues possible from the two contract awards total approximately $950 million over six years. The enhanced Enterprise-class drillship is being designed to include the most advanced drilling capabilities in the offshore drilling industry. Hydro has awarded the company a four-year drilling contract, which is expected to commence by mid-2009, following shipyard construction, sea trials, mobilization to the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and customer acceptance.

Noble Corp. Orders Ultra-Deepwater Drillship

Noble Drilling Holding has signed contracts for the construction of a new, dynamically positioned, ultra-deepwater, harsh environment Globetrotter class drillship with 's STX Heavy Industries Co., LTD (STX) and Dutch-based design and construction firm Huisman Equipment B.V. The drillship will be built on a fixed-price basis in two phases. Following construction of the hull and installation of the propulsion system by STX at their new state-of-the-art facility in , , the to-be-named drillship will sail under its own power to the where Huisman will complete the installation and commissioning of the topside equipment. The delivered cost of the drillship, excluding capitalized interest, is estimated to be $585 million, with delivery scheduled for the second half of 2011.
