Interview: Dr. Dirk Jürgens, Heads of R&D, Voith Turbo Marine

The Voith Schneider Propeller is ideal for autonomous and remote-controlled vessels because on the one hand the forces can be managed very logically (according to X/Y logic) and on the other hand it can allocate desired forces so quickly. Any sensor errors or errors in data processing can therefore best be compensated by the VSP. Together with partners, we have advanced the technology development to such an extent that remote-controlled tractors with VSP can be realized. Dr. Dirk Jürgens, Manage

Dr. Dirk Jürgens heads R&D at Voith Turbo Marine, a part of the family owned Voith conglomerate which employs more than 19,000 people in 60 countries. Voith Rudderpropellers were chosen as the propulsion system for the three new Staten Island Ferry vessels, and Dr. Jürgens discusses the evolution of the system. The ‘Voith’ name is a well-known one in the maritime industry, but to start please provide an overview of the product and service you offer to the maritime industry. The…

Evolutionary Carrousel RAVE Tugs Under Construction

In cooperation with R. Allan Ltd. (RAL) and Novatug B.V., Voith participated in the development of a new tug. The Carrousel RAVE Tug (CRT) is characterized by a towing winch on a ring. This ring can rotate freely around the tug's deckhouse – a unit referred to as the "Carrousel Towing System". This system eliminates the risk of capsizing under a tow load. In combination with two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSPs) arranged in-line, the tug design allows for a slender and highly efficient hull. New and previously unseen levels of tug operation safety and efficiency will be reached with this evolutionary concept. The first two Carrousel RAVE Tugs are currently under construction for Novatug B.V., a subsidiary of Multraship Towage & Salvage.

Green Shipping: Wessels Reederei Takes the Lead

Gerd Wessels, the 45 year old CEO of the Wessels Reederei GmbH, was elected in 2013 as Chairman of the Environmental Committee of the Technical Advisory Board of DNV GL. In this role he has championed a number of pioneering developments, such as the “Environmental Passport – Operation.” (Image: PPM News Service Pospiech)

International trade relies on transportation by sea, as about 85 percent of the freight volumes are shipped globally by vessels. But while maritime is widely regarded as the most environmentally benign of any transport system, maritime transport can cause a diverse environmental burden: It includes, beside the potential for damages and leaks, the inflow of waste water and, in particular, the emissions of air pollutants. Furthermore the improper cleaning of oil sludge, as well as the transfer of organisms into foreign ecosystems within ballast water.

Siemens: Gigantic Gear Unit Technology

Ralf Meyersieck is with the Mechanical Drives business unit of Siemens AG. www.siemens.de/navilus

Gigantic records are set by land, sea and air. For them to be set, modern high-tech solutions are needed that in the right combination make the impossible possible. For example, one insider calls gigantic ferry boats “cruise ships with car decks.” By that he is referring to their size and the comfort that size brings with it. The biggest ferry boat ever built was launched in South Korea in 2012. Going along with it was the German-made standard gearboxes that in size, performance and quality are far from just standard.
