Brexit Has 'Significantly Altered' Irish-British Freight Traffic

Dublin Get Kalmar AutoRTG Cranes

The cargo handling solutions and services provider, Kalmar has concluded an agreement with Dublin Ferryport Terminals (DFT) to extend the Kalmar AutoRTG system at the terminal with two new AutoRTG cranes.The order was booked in Cargotec's 2019 Q2 order intake, with delivery of the machines scheduled to be completed during Q2 of 2020, Kalmar, part of Cargotec, said. Part of the container and terminal division of Irish Continental Group, DFT operates the most modern container terminal at Dublin Port, with an annual throughput of approximately 380,000 TEU. The order forms part of DFT's ongoing investment programme focused on ensuring the terminal is equipped with the latest technologies to support future growth.

Eamonn O'Reilly Re-elected as Chairman of ESPO

Eamonn O’Reilly was unanimously re-elected as Chairman following a vote of European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO)'s General Assembly in Brussels. E. O’Reilly has been chairing the organisation during the last two years.The General Assembly also re-elected Annaleena Mäkilä and elected Zeno d’Agostino as Vice-Chairs. Royal Princess Crowns Record Cruise Season

The 330m Royal Princess cruise ship arrived in Dublin this afternoon carrying more than 3,000 passengers and crew. Her arrival kickstarts a record cruise season for Dublin Port with 151 cruise calls confirmed for 2018, bringing just over 270,000 visitors to the city. The Royal Princess will hold a commanding presence in the city’s port with her size more than two-and-a-half times the length of Dublin’s Spire (which stands at 121 meters) and her 66-meter height making her taller than Liberty Hall. The ship also holds the prestige of being christened by The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton. Among the 151 cruise calls confirmed for 2018, there are nine maiden calls. This year 23 cruise calls will feature ships longer than 300m including the 330m Regal Princess on September 13th.

World's Largest Short Sea Ro-Ro Vessel Named in Dublin

MV Celine, the world’s largest short sea Ro-Ro ship, will today be christened in a ceremony at Dublin Port with guest of honour, An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar TD, Godmother to the new ship, Geraldine O’Reilly, and the port’s chaplains. The formal ceremony is a long-held tradition intended to bring good fortune to the ship and involves breaking a champagne bottle against the hull as the ship is christened. To mark today’s occasion, new Irish music commissioned by Dublin Port and performed by John Sheahan of the Dubliners and Colm Mac Con Iomaire of the Frames will premiere at the ceremony, heralding the ship’s naming in front of invited guests representing her Luxembourg-based owner CLdN and the wider European shipping industry.

Four Luxury Cruise Ships Bring 13,000 Visitors to Dublin

Dublin Port welcomed four luxury cruise liners within a four-hour window this morning, bringing some 13,000 tourists to the city, making it the city's biggest-ever day for cruise tourism. The passengers from the four ships - the Celebrity Silhouette, the MV Horizon, the Magellan and the Royal Princess - are likely to spend an average of €100 each, which would amount to a €1.3 million boost for the Dublin economy over the course of the day, Dublin Port Company. Dublin Port Gets Approval for ABR Project

Dublin Port Company today welcomed the decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant permission for the Alexandra Basin Redevelopment (ABR) Project which will transform Dublin Port’s infrastructure and enable it to service the economy for decades ahead. The project will increase the port’s ability to handle large ships by deepening and lengthening three kilometres of the port’s seven kilometres of berths. It will also deepen the port to provide an entrance channel with a depth of at least 10m. The ABR Project is the largest single infrastructure development project in the history of Dublin Port. The project is expected to take five years to complete, costing an estimated €230m.

Varadkar Praises Dublin Port’s Financial Performance

Irish Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar has announced that Dublin Port Company has paid a dividend of €8 million to the State based on its financial results for the year ended December 31, 2013. The payment is in line with the company’s commitment to making a dividend payment of 30% of profit after tax, annually. It follows the company’s total dividend payment of €15 million last year, which included a once-off special dividend of €8 million, and brings total dividend payments to the State by the port to €69.8 million over the last eight years.

MPE Helps on Stena Ferry Interior Refit

MPE Interiors has completed a contract for ferry operator Stena Line to deliver an extensive fit out on the Stena Adventurer vessel. MPE carried out the refurbishment works at the forward end of passenger decks seven and eight on the vessel which operates between Holyhead, on Anglesey, and Dublin Port. "This is another great project for MPE Interiors to win and continues our long standing relationship with Stena Line," said Cliff Grainger, MPE director. "The job follows similar works which we completed on the Stena Mersey and Stena Lagan over the summer. "On this job we have worked on the ‘Stena Plus Lounge’ on Deck eight. This includes installing new seating for extra comfort and creating a more spacious lounge and dining area with a media room and quiet area.

Irish Ferries Launches Dublin-Cherbourg Ferry Route

A new direct passenger car ferry service linking Dublin with the French port of Cherbourg is being introduced by Irish Ferries with the first sailing departing from Dublin on January 18. The once-weekly, year-round service – which the company’s head of passenger sales Dermot Merrigan said “will bring the European motorways directly into the heart of our capital city” – will depart from Dublin every Saturday (15.30) arriving into Cherbourg next morning (11.30). Return sailings will depart Cherbourg each Sunday (17.00) with early arrival back in Dublin on Monday morning (11.00).

Irish Port Hosts UNCTAD Training for Developing Countries

The 'TrainForTrade' Port Training Programme focussing on ‘Modern Port Management’ runs for two weeks in the port. The programme, which sees 28 delegates attending from countries across the globe including Ghana, Indonesia, Maldives, Namibia, South Africa, Pakistan and Tanzania, has been organised by UNCTAD in cooperation with Port of Cork (PoC), Dublin Port Company (DPC), Belfast Harbour Commissioners (BHC), and with the support of Irish Aid. The TrainForTrade programme was set-up to facilitate sustainable economic development in developing and transition countries through training and capacity development and is run by UNCTAD, whose mandate is to work for development-led globalisation, where the development paths are sustainable and inclusive.

SafePort Project Completes Successful Sea Trials

Aker Finnyards Delivers Unique Ferry

Irish Continental Group has taken delivery of its newest vessel, the $92 million cruise ferry m.v. Ulysses, from Aker Finnyards. With 2.6 miles (4 km) of deck space for commercial vehicles and cars, and accommodation for 2,000 people, the Ulysses is the largest ferry of its kind in the world, ICG said. The vessel, which is expected to arrive at Dublin port on Sunday, will enter service on ICG's route between Dublin and Holyhead in Wales in a month's time, it said. Ulysses is 50,938 grt and stands 12 decks high, with a keel-to-mast height of 167.5 feet. Onboard features include a complex of bistro-style restaurants, two cinemas, a 500-seat traditional Irish pub, a shopping mall, a helicopter pad, and a glass-fronted passenger lift, which operates on the outside of the vessel.

Port workers refuse to handle Irish Ferries' ships

Dublin port workers voted to support Irish Ferries staff fighting attempts to replace them with cheaper foreign labor by refusing to handle any of the firm’s ships, according to an Ireland Online report. The vote was unanimous. As a result of this ballot, SIPTU (Ireland’s largest union) members will not handle any Irish Ferries ships – such as the MV Normandy – until the dispute is resolved, according to the report. The MV Normandy was allowed to dock late on Sunday night at Dublin with 113 passengers, for what was described as humanitarian reasons, after protests by port workers in Rosslare forced it to divert to the capital. It has since sailed to Cherbourg and SIPTU has given the company notice its members will not allow it to return.

New Port Tunnel Will Ease Dublin Congestion

The Irish government approved a $262 million tunnel-building scheme designed to divert port traffic away from the traffic-choked center of Dublin. The tunnel will provide a direct motorway access to Dublin's port, linking it to the main Dublin-Belfast route. It will remove heavy goods vehicle traffic from the city center, currently clogged by almost two million trucks each year. Work on the project is expected to begin at the end of next year and take some three and a half years to complete.
