A Thames river cruise company has been fined a total £304,925 (approximately $411,000) at Westminster Magistrate's Court in a prosecution brought by the Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) for operating without a valid Domestic Safety Management (DSM) certificate.Sodexo Ltd pleaded guilty to operating without the valid certificate, contrary to the Merchant Shipping Act 1995, on one of its Thames cruise vessels Symphony. Costa Cruises Installs Funnel on Costa Favolosa
Work is continuing in Fincantieri’s Marghera yard on the construction of the Costa Favolosa, the 15th member of the Costa fleet. Her funnel was recently installed: the same distinctive yellow funnel with the blue “C” that for over 60 years has graced every vessel in the fleet of Costa Cruises. Since the establishment of the brand in the 1940s, some 35 ships have sported the iconic Costa funnel. Like the other 14 members of the fleet currently in service, the Costa Favolosa will fly the Italian flag.

Tokyo-based shipping line NYK Group (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) has decided to establish a new company, Symphony Creative Solutions (SCS) in Singapore, to develop and market new solutions in the shipping and logistics fields. Port of LA hosts Musicians
Taiwanâ€™s Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (ESO) made its American debut on 9 and 10 December in Los Angeles. The 70-piece orchestra, under the direction of its Director of Music and Conductor, Gernot Schmalfuss, traveled to California from Taipei to perform in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Port of Los Angeles, a harbor that is a major port of call for Evergreen Line container ships. The performance on December 9 was held at the passenger ship terminal in San Pedro where a day-long celebration took place for the community, along with attractions for children and other celebratory activities. ESO played the 1812 Overture as its debut performance in the US.
MOL Safety Conference 2012 Held
Tokyo—Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. (MOL) announced that the company has held the MOL Safety Conference 2012 in Manila, Mumbai, Dubrovnik, and Tokyo. Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad from Oslo has been granted the Statoil talent scholarship in classical music for 2014. The grant is part of Statoil's talent program "Heroes of Tomorrow", where the company supports young talents in education, sports and culture. The classical music scholarship comprises one million Norwegian kroner. Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad is 20 years old and is studying at the Norwegian Barratt Due Music Institute. Aker Yards and MSC Signed Cruise Ship Contract
Aker Yards has signed a contract with MSC Cruises to build a 4th MSC Musica Class Cruise ship. The MSC Magnifica will be built at Aker Yards, Saint-Nazaire and delivered in 2010. The value of the contract is approximately $546.8m (EUR 410 million.) The contract is subject to financing. Like its three predecessors (MSC Musica, MSC Orchestra and MSC Poesia, this 89,600 GT cruise ship is 294 metres long and just over 32 metres wide, and complies with the Panama Canal Standard. MSC Magnifica will carry up to 4,000 people on board (including crew) and have 1275 passenger cabins, 80% of which being outside. Aker Yards is presently completing the construction of MSC Orchestra, which will be delivered in May.

Kiel Cruise Shipping Season Draws to a Close
As this year’s cruise shipping season draws to a close, Dirk Claus, the Managing Director of the Port of Kiel (SEEHAFEN KIEL GmbH & Co. KG), reported that it has been a positive one. The season ends on Monday September 21st with the visit of Marco Polo. Dirk Claus said at the Seatrade Europe Trade Fair in Hamburg that “this year Kiel has been visited by many especially big cruise ships. We were able to well exceed our passenger target of 250,000 passengers.” During the season, 21 different cruise ships called a total of 117 times and more than 290,000 passengers boarded or left a cruise ship in Kiel, compared to 222,000 in 2008. The biggest ship to call this season was the 102,600 GT Costa Magica, followed by the 92,400 GT MSC Orchestra and the 86,000 GT Eurodam.
DNV GL to Class Royal Caribbean’s New ICON Ships
