UTLC Launches Service from China to Europe
Russia's JSC United Transport and Logistics Company (UTLC) jointly with KTZ-Express launched a new transport product for the delivery of non-hazardous chemical goods in tank containers from China to Europe as part of the regular container service U West (Dostyk-Brest). The first train, consisting of 82 twenty-foot tank containers, loaded with butylene glycol produced by XINJIANG MARKOR CHEMICAL INDUSTRY, departed from Korla Station (China). The cargo transited through the territories of Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus and further through Poland through the territories of the EU countries to the terminal at the station Duisburg (Germany). Nearly Half of Interlake Fleet Fit with Scrubbers
The M/V Mesabi Miner has sailed from Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., becoming Interlake Steamship Company’s fourth self-unloading bulk carrier to be outfitted with exhaust gas scrubbers. Interlake became the first U.S.-flag fleet to test freshwater scrubbers on the Great Lakes in April 2015 after pioneering the emission-reduction technology on its M/V Hon. James L. Oberstar. In 2016, the company outfitted its first thousand foot vessel, the M/V James R. Barker, and its 826-foot M/V Lee A. Tregurtha in its second phase of exhaust gas scrubber implementation.
Navios Selects Preferred Scrubber Supplier
Navios ShipManagement Inc., a member of Navios Group, has issued a letter of intent endorsing DuPont Clean Technologies as the preferred supplier of exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) for its vessels. The letter of intent also confirms that Navios and DuPont Clean Technologies will carry out a joint feasibility study and techno-economic analysis of marine scrubbing units for retrofitting or new build installation on a variety of vessels, from bulk carriers to containers and tankers. New Fuel Regs Drive Scrubber Business
The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association and its members are preparing to meet higher demand for gas scrubbing systems to bring SOx emissions in line with the targets set by the IMO’s 2020 fuel sulfur content proposals. As previously reported by this correspondent in Maritime Reporter and Engineering News (December 2016 issue, page 24; January 2017 issue, page 28), the IMO has come in for some severe criticism over its proposals to introduce a global marine fuels sulfur content cap of 0.5 percent (mass/mass) by the year 2020.

Maritime Reporter & Engineering News recently spoke with Mark Barker, president of The Interlake Steamship Company, who has sent its fourth vessel — its second 1,000-footer — to be outfitted with exhaust gas scrubbers. After seriously pursuing the possibility of converting its ships to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) several years ago, U.S. based Great Lakes shipper The Interlake Steamship Company found that the region’s LNG infrastructure was simply not present to support such conversions.

Scrubbers Set to Help Shippers Meet the New Sulfur Cap
The 0.5 percent global sulfur cap by 2020 requires marine industry action. “By 2025, up to 20 percent of the global fleet could have [scrubber] technology installed,” estimates DuPont Clean Technologies Marine Business Development Manager, Europe, Marco Dierico. “Ship owners and operators that want to minimize costly changes and continue to burn heavy fuel oil (HFO) will require a scrubber to clean the fuel. The October 27 decision from the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) to enforce a global 0.5 percent cap on sulfur emissions from fuels by 2020 will necessitate ship owners and operators to select an emissions abatement solution in order to meet the new requirements.
First Multi-stream DuPont Scrubbers Installed
DuPont, through its subsidiary Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), is installing the first of its proprietary in-line, multi-engine marine scrubbers serving three auxiliary engines on two newbuild bulk carriers. DuPont has submitted a patent application for this scrubber inlet configuration which connects multiple exhaust sources at the bottom of a single in-line scrubber tower with minimal space requirements. This proprietary design minimizes turbulence and back-pressure of entering exhaust, allowing multiple exhaust streams to take advantage of a single slim in-line scrubber tower without the need for large-footprint fans or venturis. “The DuPont Marine Scrubber design has always been in-line, and now we extend our low back-pressure, no-fans philosophy to the multi-stream design.
Another Scrubber Retrofit for Vulica Shipping
DuPont awarded third marine scrubber order by Vulica Shipping Co. Ltd. Vulica Shipping Co. Ltd. has selected DuPont Clean Technologies for the supply of a hybrid single-stream scrubber designed by DuPont subsidiary Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO) to be retrofitted to MV H.A. Sklenar, a self-unloading bulk carrier that operates along the Gulf of Mexico. The vessel is owned by Vulica Shipping Company Ltd., a subsidiary of Vulcan Materials. “We designed the exhaust gas scrubber tower and scrubber system so Vulica could efficiently treat the exhaust gas produced by the main diesel engine on MV H.A. Sklenar,” Garrett Billemeyer, Technology Development manager explained.

As vessel owners struggle over the best and most efficient means to meet stringent new emission regulations, the Interlake Steamship Company has proven phase one of emissions-reduction technology on Great Lakes; and two additional ships are to be outfitted with exhaust gas scrubbers in 2016. Following the implementation of exhaust gas scrubbers on its self-unloading bulk carrier M/V Hon. James L. Black Market Refrigerants Pose Risk to Shippers
In 2011, several refrigerated, reefer containers exploded, killing three port workers. While there has been no further tragedies since then, counterfeit refrigerants remain in circulation and still represent a safety risk. Counterfeit refrigerant cylinders can consist of a dangerously unstable cocktail of gases, blended to roughly mimic the most common refrigerant, R-134a. These cylinders are often loaded with rogue gases such as R-40. Though similar to R-134a, R-40 reacts with aluminium to form trimethylaluminum, a highly volatile substance that, when exposed to air, can explode.
