Designed by Jensen Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and built by the Great Lakes Shipyard of Cleveland, Ohio a 74-foot workboat is quickly making a name for itself; in and out of the water. The “HandySize” Class Tug was designed to fill the niche between the 2,400 to 3,200 HP market for harbor workboats, fireboats, and construction operations and coastal towing, too. The Tug model 2800 is powered by two Cummins QSK38,1400HP diesel engines rated at 1800 rpm, providing a total of 2,800 HP – or in order words, just right for those niche tasks assigned to a Great Lakes workboat.

Duramax Marine, a world leader in water-lubricated rubber bearings, recently broke ground on a new facility that will streamline the company's current manufacturing operations. The facility, with approximately 65,000 sq. ft. of factory and office space will consolidate production and administration into one centralized location in Troy Township, Ohio, approximately 40 miles south east of Cleveland. The expected grand opening will be the first quarter of 2001. Watson Coatings Inc. said that Gordon Watson, founder and CEO, retired on Nov. 2, 2000. Gordon founded Watson Coatings in 1987 with his wife Carol, and sons, Tom and Gary. Carol Watson will continue as Office Manager…

Duramax Marine LLC creates a DuraCooler of seismic proportions with its largest keel cooling system to date. Created for Astromaritima’s supply vessel, the Astro Vermelho, the DuraCooler measures 32 tubes wide by 16 ft. long. A first of its size for Duramax Marine; the previous largest DuraCooler was 24 tubes wide. Headquartered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Astromaritima owns and operates supply vessels for the oil company Petrobras. “The service provided by Duramax Marine has been excellent, and the results of the DuraCoolers now on the Astro Pargo and the Astro Vermelho are extremely beneficial for our company,” as stated by Astromaritima’s technical department. Modifying the Astro Vermelho was more complicated than the previous modification of the Astro Pargo.

A few weeks before scheduled delivery of the first of two new 104-ft. pilot boats for the San Francisco Bar Pilots, Marco Shipyard Seattle managers were anticipating a smooth, on-time delivery – but everything changed during the vessel’s first sea trial. “At that late date we realized that the keel coolers that we specified and purchased were not adequate to cool the diesel generators. After we had already purchased the generator sets and the keel coolers, the diesel engines’ specifications, including heat rejection, were changed by their manufacturer,” says Bob McMahon, Marco Shipyard’s vice president and general manager at Marco Seattle. McMahon contacted Duramax Marine, the manufacturer of the new DuraCooler keel coolers used on the pilot boats.
