Huisman Secures Port Order for Automated Stacking Cranes

Sri Lanka Starts Construction of $700M Port Project

Sri Lanka's largest port began on Wednesday construction of a $700 million terminal project, partly funded by India's Adani Group, an official said, marking the first foray by an Indian company into the sector. India has this year provided the most financial support to its southern neighbour, which is facing its worst economic crisis in more than seven decades. India is now keen to see long-term projects by Indian companies take off in Sri Lanka. "Dredging commenced in the morning," Upul Jayatissa, managing director of the state-run Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), told Reuters.

Recent cyber attacks to the US Government, the IMO, Maersk, amongst others has caused the world to pay attention to criminal cyber activities by foreign states, terrorists, and criminals. The cyber attack against CMA CGM shut down services for close on two weeks. Two days later, on October 30th the IMO was held hostage by a cyber attack. These attacks follow attacks earlier this year against MSC and COSCO.As of January 1, 2021 all vessels that have a safety management system must address cyber security in order to maintain ISM certification.

Port of Rotterdam to Trial PIN-free Container Handling

This week, various parties in Rotterdam will be launching a new pilot project, in which containers are handled and released without a PIN code: a widely used verification method in this transport segment. The project revolves around a new application, Secure Container Release, which replaces the PIN code with a digital signal: a solution that is significantly less susceptible to fraud. CMA CGM Launches Rhine Valley Rail

The CMA CGM Group has introduced Rhine Valley Rail, a new rail service connecting the Port of Rotterdam with the German hinterland. The train connections are aligned with CMA CGM’s deep-sea services.Operated in cooperation with TFG, the Rhine Valley Rail service will officially start with its first train departure in Dortmund on 18 October. Sri Lanks Invest $190mln on ECT Terminal

Sri Lanks will invest a sum of US$ 190 million to installs gantry cairns and also add other infrastructure to the East Container Terminal, said Sagala Ratnayaka, the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Southern Development.He said Sri Lanka Port Authority (SLPA) would initially invest this amount and then get it reimbursed from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)  under a loan agreement.Ratnayaka said that the passenger terminal in the Colombo Harbour too would be developed. “We want this passenger terminal to be in par with the Singapore Cruse terminal to attract vessels that would pick up and drop passengers in Colombo.”He said…

MSC Gulsun Arrives Rotterdam Port

World's largest container ship the MSC Gülsün arrived yesterday (August 03) at the APMT 2 terminal quay in the Rotterdam harbour and will remain there until Thursday afternoon.The vessel, 400 meters long and with a beam of 62 meters, has a 23,756-TEU (twenty-foot standard containers) capacity, making it the world’s largest container ship.MSC Gülsün is the first container ship capable of transporting 24 containers side by side across the breadth of its hull. North West Central Corridor Gets Terminals

The inland terminals CTU in Lelystad, HOV Harlingen and Westerman Multimodal Logistics in Hasselt joined the North West Central Corridor in June.The new partnership of deep-sea terminals, inland terminals and inland shipping companies on the Amsterdam-Utrecht-Rotterdam route was established in February 2019.The number of inland terminals connected to the North West Central Corridor has increased in three months from five to eight terminals, resulting in a total shipment volume of 6,500 TEU per week. Green Box Vessel Arrives in Rotterdam

Evergreen’s container vessel arrived in Rotterdam during its maiden voyage. Ever Glory called at the ECT Delta Zuid terminal at Amazonehaven in Rotterdam around noon on Thursday afternoon 13 June.It is the shipping company’s first vessel in the 20,000 TEU class to be equipped with scrubbers, significantly reducing harmful emissions from the Ever Glory."To emphasise this environmentally-friendly measure, the outside of the vessel has been fully stowed with green Evergreen containers," pointed out a press release.The Evergreen 20,000 TEU-type is a series of container ships of the shipping company Evergreen Marine , of which some ships are still under construction or intended to be.The ships of the class, of which eleven are planned, were ordered in January 2015.

Hapag-Lloyd Christens “Al Jmeliyah” in Rotterdam

Hapag-Lloyd's 15,000 TEU ship "Al Jmeliyah" was officially christened in Rotterdam. Naming patron is Inge Sijbesma, the wife of Feike Sijbesma, CEO of the corporation DSM – one of Hapag-Lloyd’s biggest customers in the Netherlands.The name “Al Jmeliyah” is Arabic for “the beautiful one.” With its ten sister vessels, the “Al Jmeliyah” numbers among the so-called “Ultra Large Container Vessels” in Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet.However, this was not the first time that Hapag-Lloyd has christened a ship in Rotterdam. Rotterdam Box Terminal Union Plan 24-hour Strike

Workers at container terminals at the port of Rotterdam's Maasvlakte harbour were due to begin a 24-hour strike on Thursday afternoon, a union official said. The port said the strike, which followed a breakdown in talks with port authorities aimed at averting feared job losses due to modernisation projects, would affect seven ships at the port's terminals. Rotterdam Port Receives Largest Box Ship

The MSC Oscar arrived on Tuesday (yesterday) at the APM1 terminal in Rotterdam. With a capacity of 19,224 TEU (20-foot containers), the 396 meters long and 59 meters wide ship is the largest container ship in the world. The MSC Oscar arrived from Algeciras and will leave for Bremerhaven on Wednesday evening, 4 March. On 9 March the ship will return to Rotterdam, where it will be moored at the ECT in the Delta East terminal. After that the MSC Oscar will leave for the Mediterranean via Felixstowe.

ECT Delta Terminal Receives Three Mega-Ship Cranes

After a voyage of more than two months, yet another three new giant  super post panamax ship-to-shore cranes from Shanghai arrived at the ECT Delta Terminal at the Maasvlakte, in Rotterdam. The remotely-operated cranes have a lifting height of 50 meters under the spreader and can reach across 24 containers wide, making them capable of handling even the world’s largest containerships. Furthermore, the cranes can be remotely controlled from the office by ECT’s crane operators. With this subsequent investment, ECT is further expanding its facilities to handle Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS's). Last year, ECT also commissioned five of such cranes. The cranes were manufactured by the Chinese company ZPMC.

Rotterdam Implements Paperless Container Transfers

In the near future, a physical Customs document will no longer be required to transfer containers from one Maasvlakte terminal to the other within the Port of Rotterdam. Participating terminals APMT, ECT and RWG have made agreements with the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration for a so-called ‘paperless transfer’ system, which, beginning July 1, 2016, will considerably reduce the administrative workload – particularly for shipping lines – and simplify the exchange of containers between Maasvlakte’s five deep-sea terminals.

Rotterdam Unions, Container Firms Reach Deal on Job Security

The trade unions FNV and CNV Vakmensen, the Rotterdam container companies and the Port of Rotterdam Authority concluded consultations on employment in the container industry. The trade unions will present the outcome of the negotiations to their members with favourable advice. The most important part of the negotiation result is that the companies involved will offer a job security guarantee until 1 July 2020, to those of their employees who already had an employment contract for an indefinite period by 1 January 2015 and who are covered by a CLA of the corresponding company. Furthermore, the Port Senior Fit Scheme will be extended to employees aged 60 years. It has also been agreed that the 120 employees of ailing RPS will be offered a customised solution.

Container Company ECT Under Investigation

The Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) is reportedly investigating alleged market manipulation by Europe Container Terminals (ECT), the largest container company in the Rotterdam harbor. According to anonymous sources, ACM raided ECT last summer and found it was giving priority to inland shippers it hired itself to take goods to and from the port in its European Gateway Services. Several companies complained about the preferential treatment ECT. Dutch newspaper Financieele Dagblad (FD) says its sources want to remain anonymous because of the powerful position ECT holds within the port. Several sources told the FD that about 18 employees of ACM invaded the headquarters that they. They seized computer files and questioned some managers.
