Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, navies adjusted how they operate at home and while deployed, to keep their forces ready for any missions as they keep their Sailors, families, communities, as well as allies and partners safe from the coronavirus.Navies have taken a number of prudent preventative measures to limit outbreaks, mitigate cases of infection and reduce the community spread of the virus.Speaking during his May 29 “On The Horizon: Navigating the European and African Theaters” podcast, Admiral James G. Eisenhower Strike Group Ready for Action

Approximately 6,000 Sailors from the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (Ike CSG) are conducting a sustainment exercise (SUSTEX) to maintain their readiness and capability to deploy anywhere in the world on short notice should the need arise. "Ike CSG is doing a great job on SUSTEX. Sustaining the readiness of this strike group--so it is ready to respond to a crisis anywhere on the planet--is a bargain and an important part of what our Navy's Optimized Fleet Response Plan does for the nation," said Adm. Phil Davidson, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces. SUSTEX is designed to test and train the carrier strike group's ability to perform and effectively respond as an integrated team during scenarios the group may encounter while deployed or during high-end warfare.

US Navy Calls off Search for Missing Sailor

U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard assets ended the search April 12 for a missing sailor assigned to USS Carter Hall (LSD 50). The sailor was reported missing April 9 while the ship was conducting routine training operations in support of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group Composite Training Unit Exercise, approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. The Navy immediately initiated search and rescue operations. Various Navy and Coast Guard helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft participated in the 72-hour search that covered more than 22,388 square nautical miles.

US Navy Searching for Missing Sailor

A sailor on board the dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) was reported missing April 9 as the ship was conducting routine training operations in support of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group Composite Training Unit Exercise off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. The Sailor was identified as missing at approximately 4:20 p.m. and the ship immediately launched a search and rescue operation. Several Navy and Coast Guard units are assisting in the effort. “We are continuing to search tirelessly with every asset at our disposal.

McFaul Crew Captures Suspected Pirates

The crew of the guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul captured 10 suspected pirates and rescued eight crewmembers from the Indian cargo dhow Faize Osamani near Salalah, Oman, April 5 after a dhow and three skiffs attempted to attack the Motor Vessel Rising Sun the same day. Rising Sun sent a distress call that morning to alert maritime forces that pirate skiffs had pulled alongside and were firing small arms and rocket-propelled grenades at their vessel. The Omani warship Al Sharquiyah and the USS McFaul immediately responded.

Anzio Rescues Stranded Sailors

The guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68) responded to a distress call May 20 from Amerauto, a 34-foot sailing vessel. The vessel was slowly sinking and the four crew members were transferred to Anzio. Amerauto was 425 miles from Bermuda when they put out their distress call and 1,700 miles from their next destination of the Azores. The vessel and its Ukrainian crew of four had been underway for five days after departing Bermuda on May 15, heading for the Azores.

Eisenhower (CVN 69) and guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68) aided the small vessel, Elena, a Hylas 46 Sloop, by supplying them with fuel and fresh fruits and vegetables May 19, approximately 500 miles west of the Azores. Charles P. Drakos of Cold Spring Harbor, New York, and Rudy Halbart of Huntington, New York, left St. Martin on May 4, bound for the Azores on their first Atlantic crossing. They had a few days of favorable sailing when trouble came.

Strike Group Ships Complete ULTRA-S

Ships assigned to the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (ESG) and John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group (JCSSG) successfully completed Unit Level Training and Readiness Assessment-Sustainment (ULTRA-S) April 9-14 during their deployments to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. ULTRA-S is an assessment of the ship’s training proficiency level in warfare areas such as engineering, damage control, combat systems, medical, aviation, and maintenance and material management. USS John C. Stennis Now Operating in Persian Gulf

Ike’s S-3 Division Receives “Best of Class” Designation

The Supply Department aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) received the Atlantic Fleet “Best of Class” designation for the 2006 Ship’s Store Retail and Service Excellence Award on March 23. The “Best of Class” designation signifies a superior level of service beyond the normal service provided on other ships in Ike’s class. The designation is a culmination of a year’s worth of accomplishment by S-3 Division. “This award really is a testament to all of the hard work everyone in S-3 Division displays on a daily basis,” said Lt. Cmdr. Greg Lask, Ike’s principal assistant for services. The designation meant success by S-3 from top to bottom.

USS Anzio Provides Assistance to Pakistani Dhow

USS Anzio (CG 68) came to the rescue of a Pakistan-flagged dhow in distress in the Arabian Sea on Feb. 13 while conducting maritime security operations (MSO) in the 5th Fleet area of operations. The 13-person crew of motor vessel Al-Sanaullah, from Pasni, Pakistan, signaled Anzio’s airborne helicopter as it flew by them by waving rags and pointing to gas cans. The helicopter crew, at the time some 30 nautical miles from Anzio, directed the ship to the stricken dhow’s location. A rescue and assistance team boarded the dhow as part of their MSO mission to provide supplies and assistance to the crew. The vessel was out of fuel and had been drifting for four days. The boarding team provided the dhow’s crew with approximately 500 gallons of fuel and water, fruits, bread and meat.

USS John C. Stennis Deploys with Carrier Strike Group 3

USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Sailors said goodbye to their family members and friends Jan. 16, as the ship departed Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton for San Diego to onload Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9. The carrier, with its embarked air wing, USS Antietam (CG 54), and USS Preble (DDG 88), will deploy from San Diego Saturday, Jan. 20. USS O'Kane (DDG 77) and USS Paul Hamilton (DDG 60) will deploy from their homeport of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Stennis is the flagship for Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CCSG) 3, headed by Rear Adm. Kevin M. Quinn. “I’m ready for deployment," said Machinist’s Mate Fireman Josh Layton. Stennis’ embarked air wing consists of the F/A-18C Hornet, F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, EA-6B Prowler, E-2C Hawkeye 2000, C-2A Greyhound and SH-60F/HH-60H Seahawk.
