Crowley and the Port of San Diego broke ground for the shoreside charging station designed to provide clean energy for the company’s forth-coming zero-emissions tugboat, eWolf.The charging station is a microgrid charging facility that will allow vessels to recharge quickly while reducing peak loads on the community energy grid. It is equipped with two containerized energy storage systems provided by Corvus Energy. The station is designed to operate on off-peak hours from the community’s energy grid, and it includes a solar power array to support renewable energy use.

U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced more than $703 million to fund 41 projects in 22 states and one territory that designed to help improve port facilities through the Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program. Supply chain issues tied to liner shipping have been front page news throughout 2021; just about everyone agrees that there’s a problem. On December 13th, Brazilian company WEG Electric Equipment, and Dutch company Praxis Automation Technology, both leading companies within their respective fields, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the bid of Damen Shipyards Group and Saab for the construction of four corvettes for the Brazilian Navy. Kalmar's new all-electric terminal tractor is helping the Port of Long Beach (POLB) meet its eco-efficiency objectives while satisfying the commercial demands of the users of the second-busiest container seaport in the US.According to a press release from Kalmar, a part of Cargotec Corporation, POLB  in California handles trade worth in excess of $180bn from 175 shipping lines connecting to 217 seaports around the world. In 2017, more than 7.5 million container units passed through the port.US port operators are increasingly demanding more environmentally friendly machines and Californian ports have taken a lead in this respect by setting a target of having fully electric fleets by 2030.Ports present some unique environmental challenges given their frequent proximity to residential areas.

Officials from the Port of Long Beach, Southern California Edison and the California Energy Commission today launched the nation’s largest pilot project for zero-emissions cranes and other cargo-handling equipment for seaports. Funded mostly by a $9.7 million grant from the California Energy Commission, the project will bring 25 vehicles that are zero- or near zero-emissions to Port of Long Beach marine terminals for one year to test their performance in a real-world setting. The launch event was held at Pacific Container Terminal at Long Beach’s Pier J — operated by SSA Terminals — one of three terminals participating in the project.

A maritime Solutions Company in Dubai has just taken delivery of ASIS 9.5m Cabin RIBs for Security Patrol and Pilot Services. The multi-purpose custom built crafts will be used for Dubai International Port Operations on a daily basis. The 9.5m Rigid Inflatable Boats have a heavy duty fiberglass hull and an extra reinforced aluminium cabin superstructure. Deigned and certified under Category “B”, these RIBs have great stability and seaworthiness. They can withstand waves of up to 4m height and wind of Beaufort force 8. They are powered by Yanmar diesel Inboard engine of 315 Hp.

The Ulstein Verft subsea newbuild, Island Performer, was delivered today to shipowner Island Offshore. The flexible, state-of-the-art RLWI/IMR vessel will serve her first five years for FTO in the Gulf of Mexico. “The vessel is customized to suit the scope of work in the FTO contract, in which RLWI (Riser-less Light Well Intervention) and IMR (Inspection/Maintenance/Repair) are the main tasks. She is able to perform operations at depths down to 3,000 meters, and the contracted work start at year’s end,” said Managing Director Håvard Ulstein, Island Offshore.

The ship uses Volvo Penta diesel engines for both propulsion and generator set that helps to reduce emissions significantly. The two standard Volvo Penta D16 MG Gensets on MTS Duandra generate power for on-board electricity, thruster, cargo pumps and two electric engines which are part of the propulsion system. This setup reduces the total installed diesel power on-board the Duandra with approximately 30% compared to a conventionally built ship.

The 83-year-old British man was homeward bound from the Azores Islands when his yacht became disabled through storm damage. The crew of the Russian warship Vice-Admiral Kulakov responded to the lone yachtsman's MAYDAY call from his yacht Elixir in the North Sea. The yachtsman was given medical aid, telling the Russian sailors his yacht was pounded by a strong gale more than ten days ago while traveling to the UK from the Azores Islands. The yacht engine and electric equipment were disabled, and the main sail was torn. The Russian sailors brought hot food and drugs to the yacht. Ship technicians repaired the yacht's electric equipment and started up its engine.

By Edward H. The U.S. Navy's "Cruiser Modernization" program will extend the service life and enhance the combat capability of 22 of the Navy's 27 multi-mission AEGIS cruisers (CG-52 through CG-73). The Cruiser Modernization is necessary to enable the CG-47 class to participate effectively in support of joint littoral campaigns. Missions include land attack, littoral undersea warfare, force protection, and anti-air defense, as well as allowing for a possible future Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) mission. The program extends the service life of each ship to 35 years. Combat systems will be upgraded while crew size and maintenance requirements will be reduced.

Sweden's Saab sold its Marine Electronics unit to U.S. electric equipment maker Emerson Electric Co. for $85.5 million. The price corresponded to 1.6 times the unit's 1999 turnover. "The deal would have a positive effect on Saab's net cash flow", Saab said in a statement. The disposal was part of Saab's strategy of realizing value for shareholders from the commercial operations of the group's military technology, it said. Saab's marine electronics unit is a world leader in radar equipment that measures tank levels. The unit's products are sold to customers in the shipping and oil industries.

Wonson International Holdings Ltd. said that it would spend $ 449.6m purchasing the 100 percent stake in Jiangzhou Union Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The Hong Kong-listed company will pay the deal with $64.2 million cash and $385.4m worth of convertible redeemable notes. The Jiangxi-based shipyard, in South China, specializes in making and operating metal ships, matching products and equipment of ships, cranes and electric equipment as well as repairing ships.
