The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has published Edition 2014, Version 4.00 of the NMEA 0400 Installation Standard, which contains information on new technologies, updated sections and additional appendices. NMEA 0400 is a tool and reference guide for installing any piece of marine electronics equipment. Edition 2014, Version 4.00 includes two new sections—Black Box Installation and Cameras & Security Installation. Every section listed below was reviewed and updated by industry experts consisting of NMEA member manufacturers and NMEA accredited installers. Three new appendices were also added: NMEA 0183 Sentence Information, NMEA 2000 PGN Descriptions, and VHF/DSC Wiring Information.

Kohler’s newly designed Decision-Maker 3500 (DEC 3500) controller is equipped with paralleling and load-management software – allowing for automatic paralleling of two generators without the cost and extra footprint of switchgear. “While load requirements have increased due to advanced electronics equipment, onboard space is still at a premium,” said Frank Formas of Kohler Power Systems. The DEC 3500 offers a newly designed customer interface for easier data entry and retrieval. Advanced features include bus sensing, first on logic and synchronization.

A group of offshore companies, including Bluewater, Damen and Van Oord among others, has partnered for a floating tidal energy platform a project to generate clean electricity, marking the first time that a floating tidal platform is used for electricity production into the Dutch grid. Set to become operational in the first half of 2015, the BlueTEC platform, which will be moored near Texel in the Waddenzee, is of modular design and uses a new type of permanent mooring lines. It will also serve as a trial for remote locations worldwide, such as islands in Indonesia, Philippines or the Pacific.

The Navy's new Deck Simulator Shock Machine (DSSM) improves shipboard electronics reliability while reducing testing costs as equipment evaluations began in Philadelphia, saving the Navy $75,000 per test, as it meassures the effects of simulated underwater explosions on electronic equipment, informs Naval Sea Systems Command. The mammoth machine evaluates state-of-the-art, vibration-sensitive electronics cabinets weighing up to 1,500 pounds on shock isolation mounts. One of two such machines worldwide, the mechanism sits on 22,000 pounds of steel and concrete and records the effects of simulated underwater explosions on electronics equipment.

Commercial and military users of electric propulsion systems have experienced failures of the variable frequency drive (VFD) and harmonic filter (HF) systems because the system design, including the VFD, did not have adequate self-monitoring and protection. On a ship, a variable-frequency drive (VFD) can be used to control the speed and direction of rotational motors, such as pumps, propellers and azipod systems. In some cases, these failures have resulted in catastrophic equipment failures causing arcing, fire and explosions of capacitors. DRS Technologies, Inc. has been awarded a contract to continue to design advanced propulsion steam turbines for the U.S. Navy's next-generation CVN-78 class of aircraft carriers. The $5.6 million award was received by DRS from Dresser-Rand Company in Wellsville, New York, a unit of Ingersoll-Rand Company Limited (NYSE:IR). The design effort for this contract will be performed by the company's DRS Power Technology unit in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) introduced a stanrdized methodology clarifying and outlining the appropriate standards for installing marine electronics equipment, the NMEA Installation Standards. The Standards have been designed primarily for after-market installation that traditionally occurs at either boat dealers or marine electronics specialty shops. Over the last 20 years, the marine electronics market has exploded with new safety devices and other equipment. However, different from than some years ago, many retail outlets lack the expertise and manpower to install such equipment properly, which is why the NMEA developed these installation standards. The primary focus for these standards is electronics for boats ranging in size from 25 to 150 ft.

According to reports, the U.S. Coast Guard may not renew its $24 b contract with Lockheed Martin Corp. and Northrop Grumman Corp. to modernize the service's aging ships, the Coast Guard's top eofficial said. The service is considering a number of options as it negotiates with the two companies about renewing their contract to continue the Deepwater modernization program, Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen told reporters after a Senate subcommittee hearing. The $3bcontract extension would start in June and continue for 43 months. Senators from both parties said the Coast Guard has done a poor job of managing a program which, since its 2002 inception, has experienced delays, cost overruns and design flaws.

The joint venture company, MLS Corporation, represents a full service partnership arrangement between industry and government, and leverages Japanese and U.S. industry expertise in life cycle support and integration services to benefit the JMSDF. Taking a moment to think back to when Holland America Line (HAL) first announced the formulation of the new Vista Class at the Sea Trade Cruise Shipping Show in Miami, Fla. in March 2001, it is almost as though we are living in a different world. The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) is expanding its efforts to develop uniform standards for interfacing and installing marine electronics equipment. At its Annual Convention last November, the membership approved plans to issue a beta version of the new NMEA-2000 Interface Standard, and to draft a code of Installation Standards in early 1999. The new Standard, which is being developed in cooperation with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), will be a low-cost, bi-directional serial data protocol, permitting "talkers" and "listeners" to share data.
