(Photo: Bureau Veritas)

Bureau Veritas (BV) announced the development of a new notation, CII REALTIME, supporting shipowners to provide reliable and up to date data related to DCS and CII of their ships/fleet in a simplified and consistent process.Shipowners have less than a year to prepare their vessels to comply before the new EEXI and CII regulations come into effect, on January 1, 2023. BV Noted monitoring the evolution of the CII during the year can helpavoid any surprises with the ship’s energy rating and to make early and informed decisions on operational measures. IMO Workshop Promotes Energy Efficiency Measures

An International Maritime Organization (IMO) workshop is raising awareness of the organization’s regulatory regime dealing with improving energy efficiency and the control of GHG emissions from ships. Participants from Malaysian governmental departments, academia and other related bodies are in attendance at the three-day “MARPOL Annex VI and Technology Transfer” workshop, taking place in Johor, Malaysia (16-18 May). The event is organized under IMO’s GloMEEP project, which is supporting uptake and implementation of energy efficiency measures for shipping in developing countries. Malaysia is one of the 10 GloMEEP lead pilot countries.

SEEMP: Potential Win-win for Commercial Vessels

SEEMP can make a fleet more competitive in a difficult business environment while reducing its impact on the environment. In January 2013, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) put into force new regulations intended to improve the energy efficiency of ships over 400 gross tonnes (gt) on international voyages, including a requirement to keep on board a ship-specific Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). This initiative is intended to reduce ship greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by encouraging ship operators to reduce energy consumption. Since that time, there has been much discussion within the shipping industry about the potential domestic enforcement of the SEEMP. Recently, the U.S.

Knowledge is Power

Tim Angerame

World crude production may rise and fall, but the historical trend shows a steady increase in the price of a barrel of oil, and with it, the price of a ton of fuel. Add the demands of shareholders and charterers to increase operational efficiency and profitability, as well as increasing international pressure to reduce fuel consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions. It is no wonder that ship owners have seen a steady rise, as well, in the availability of technologies — from ship design to propulsion and HVAC systems to hull coatings — that are purported to reduce fuel consumption.

In Big Ship Fuel Economy, Finances Trump Regulation

Left to right: Graham Westgarth, EVP Operations and Strategy, GasLog Ltd.; Kirsi Tikka, President & COO, ABS Europe Division and Chris Errington, Director, Engineering Maritime Technical Services, Maersk Line Ltd.

While increased regulation is often cited as the primary culprit driving shipowners to adopt new energy efficient technologies and practices for their ships, one major shipowner has a differing opinion. “You can make the argument that regulations are what’s driving it, but personally I think it’s more economics,” said Chris Errington, Director of Engineering at Maersk Line. Errington, along with industry veteran Graham Westgarth, Executive Vice President of Operations and Strategy, GasLog Logistics, was part of a panel discussion led by Dr.

Shipping’s CO2 Tipping Point: Managing Carbon Emissions

Market fundamentals and impending emissions regulation demand that shipping takes the next step in formalizing and professionalizing its approach to sustainability, reflecting its increasing importance as a business-critical asset. As bunker prices rise, difficult market conditions persist and regional carbon emissions regulations strengthen, minimizing carbon management risk and encouraging shipping to become more sustainable and share this transparently with all key stakeholders will be critical to securing a competitive advantage.

Energy Dashboard to Reduce Fuel Consumption

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) installed the Energy Dashboard proof-of-concept system in USS Kidd (DDG 100), April 2. Energy Dashboard is one of several shipboard energy efficiency initiatives that provides Sailors with a real-time assessment of energy usage and recommended actions to reduce fuel and electrical power consumption."Energy Dashboard is similar to the systems in today's newer vehicles that show drivers their instantaneous miles per gallon, allowing drivers to modify their driving behaviors to maximize fuel efficiency," said Glen Sturtevant, Team Ships director for Science and Technology. In addition to Kidd, NAVSEA has installed the Energy Dashboard on board USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Sampson (DDG 102) and USS James E. Williams (DDG 95). USS Wayne E.

Navy's Great Lakes Energy Project Moves Ahead

Naval Station (NAVSTA) Great Lakes and Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Midwest are taking the next step toward decentralizing the base's steam heat delivery system, one of the largest energy efficiency initiatives in the 100-year history of the base. Teams of prospective project contractors and NAVFAC representatives will conduct site visits in mid-January at many of the buildings on base to be affected. As part of the bidding process, this will give the companies a better sense of what will be involved in the project, to be awarded by summer 2012. "This is one of the most significant projects undertaken within the region," said NAVFAC Midwest Commanding Officer Capt. Scott Bernotas. "Not only is the project large in scope, but also in future benefit.
