MethanQuest: Test Results In for Renewable Hydrogen, Methane as a Fuel
As the maritime industry embarks on 'the path to zero', it is widely acknowledged that there is currently not a 'silver bullet' solution, nor is it likely that a solution will emerge from a vaccum. Collaboration is the path forward, and efforts such as MethanQuest offer promise.The project MethanQuest was launched in September 2018 with 29 partners from research, industry and the energy sector to work on processes for producing hydrogen and methane from renewables and for using them to achieve climate-neutral mobility and power generation.
LNG Carrier Bottleneck at Panama Canal Could Last Until March
Congestion delaying LNG shipments via the Panama Canal is expected to last through the peak demand winter months, traders close to the situation said, although the canal's regulator said it had made changes to speed up transit.The price of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and shipping rates have hit record highs because of the bottleneck, supply constraints and heavy demand from Asia, where freezing weather has placed the energy supply system under strain.Ships carrying LNG from the United States to meet the Asian demand waited for up to two weeks in December to navigate the canal.
MOL to Develop Zero Emission Alt Fuel
Japanese shipping group Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced that it has joined the Carbon Capture & Reuse (CCR) Study Group and launched the "Cross-industrial Working Group Related to Zero Emission Alternative Ship Fuels".The CCR Study group was established with the objectives of proposing effective carbon neutral measures to reduce the use of fossil fuels by offering alternative energies such as synthetic methane, which is generated by combining CO2 generated by industries with renewable energy-derived hydrogen, and contributing to the establishment of new energy supply system by 2050.The working group aims to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in international shipping's value chains by using synthetic methane (methanation fuel) as an alternative to fossil fuel…
ClassNK Collaborates in Zero Emissions Working Group
Classification Society ClassNK is participating in the “Cross-industrial Working Group Related to Zero Emission Alternative Ship Fuels” established by the CCR Study Group (*). This working group which ClassNK acts as secretariat to aims to reduce CO2 emissions in the international value chain by use of methane synthesized through methanation technology which combines CO2 and hydrogen produced from renewable energy sources.In the international shipping sector, the IMO is carrying out initiatives to counter the global emission of greenhouse gas (GHG).
Adriatic LNG Receives 600th Cargo
Adriatic LNG, the company which operates the regasification terminal located off the Veneto coastline, announces the arrival of the 600th carrier, the Al Jassasiya. The carrier left Ras Laffan Port in Qatar, delivering a cargo of about 140,000 cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), equivalent to nearly 85 million cubic meters of gas. The event was celebrated on the terminal with a brief ceremony that involved the vessel's personnel and Adriatic LNG's staff, including the Operations Manager Fabian Erle, who delivered a recognition to Georgios Pissaris, the Captain of the Al Jassasiya. Adriatic LNG's Commercial Manager, Corrado Papa commented: "Once again our regasification terminal confirmed its strategic role for the national and European energy supply system.
DNV KEMA Energy Sets Up Beijing HQ
DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability is setting up its Asia Pacific Headquarters for services towards the transmission and cleaner energy sectors in Beijing. “DNV is committed to help China develop a safer, more efficient and reliable energy supply system with improved fossil and renewable power generation to support China’s growth ambitions and development towards a low carbon economy,” said DNV’s Group Chief Executive Officer Henrik O. Madsen at a press conference in Beijing. The establishment of this second clean technology headquarters for Asia Pacific follows DNV’s acquisition of 74.3% of KEMA shares in February 2012, resulting in a new company called DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability.
J D Neuhaus: Largest Ever Crane System
The largest crane system constructed to date by J D Neuhaus has been delivered to Westcon Lofteteknikk AS (WCL) of Norway for use on an offshore drilling rig. The semi portal design comprises an A-frame supporting twin overhead horizontal track beams providing a 7.5 meter span. The crane has an approximate height of 11.5 meters with a total weight of 32 tons. It is equipped with JDN hydraulic EH 40-H monorail hoists operating on each of the twin beams, each hoist providing an individual lift capacity of 40 tons.
