Wärtsilä and Swedish shipping company Furetank are co-developing and testing two technologies showing the potential to halve the methane slip.Running vessels on LNG or bio-LNG reduces emissions of CO2, NOx, SOx and harmful particles, but the downside is methane slip: the release of unburned gas fuel, not fully combusted in the engines.Although the fraction released is small, methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2.Two technical solutions have been tested in Furetank’s Vinga series tankers.

Alfa Laval and Swiss engine designer WinGD have established a joint program in which Alfa Laval will develop the fuel supply system for WinGD methanol engines. The agreement was signed on September 8 at the SMM exhibition in Hamburg, Germany.To support shipping decarbonization, WinGD has announced that its engines will be able to run on methanol as of 2024. WinGD and Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) signed a joint development agreement to together develop engine solutions that further reduce GHG emissions from methane while improving engine efficiency and footprint for reduced costs. The signing ceremony was hosted by HHI-EMD President & Chief Operating Officer Kwang-hean An and joined by WinGD’s Vice President R&D, Dominik Schneiter and Global Director Sales, Volkmar Galke who travelled from their headquarters in Switzerland.The cooperation will aim to further enhance WinGD’s dual-fuel, low-pressure X-DF engines.

Damen Marine Components (DMC), the manufacturer of rudder and steering systems, nozzles, winches and controls, said that it has won a contract to supply a steering system for the trawler Cape Arkona.Currently in build at the Baatbygg yard at Måløy in western Norway for Austral Fisheries, the 1,150m³ vessel is capable of alternating between operating as a freezer trawler, long liner and a potter vessel, all within the period of a single trip.According to a press note, DMC will be supplying the 70-metre vessel with a Van der Velden TIMON flap rudder with heal bearing and a Van der Velden COMMANDER rotary vane steering gear.The slim-profile TIMON flap rudder is a popular and proven system which delivers superior maneuvering and course-keeping performance compared to conventional rudders.

Visitors to one of Europe’s premier marine exhibitions will be able to test Volvo Penta’s 13-liter IMO Tier III solution complemented by its latest state-of-the-art Inboard Performance System (IPS) propulsion package. A test boat fitted with a Volvo Penta D13-IPS900 (700 hp) package and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust after treatment system will be available for sea trials by customers at Seawork commercial marine and workboat exhibition and conference, in Southampton, UK.

The auto manufacturer got caught using software to trick emissions control software during testing on some cars – nearly 500,000 2.0 liter and 83,000 3.0 liter diesel vehicles – in order to get a passing grade, after which the cars operated in violation of the Clean Air Act. The years of cheating on vehicles from model years 2009 to 2016 sold and leased in the U.S., resulted in emissions of up to 40 times the permitted level of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter.

Wärtsilä launched a new anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel design at this year's Sea Asia exhibition held in Singapore from April 21-23. According to the designer, the focus of the new design is on simplicity, efficiency, low fuel consumption, and a reduced environmental impact. The equipment solutions are suitable for medium to large size AHTS vessels, where one of the key components is a two-speed gearbox system selected to meet the design targets of reduced costs and less complexity without compromising operational safety.

Caterpillar Marine is pleased to announce MaK™ diesel electric propulsion (DEP) solutions have been selected to power four Maersk Supply Services (MSS) newbuilds to be constructed by COSCO (Dalian) Shipyards. Each vessel will be equipped with 4x MaK M 32 E generator sets with a power output of 4,400 kW each and 2x MaK 8 M 20 C at 1440 kW each. The new M 32 E engine solutions boast an increased power rating of 550 kW per cylinder @ 720 and 750 rpm, with total output ranging from 3,300 kW for the six cylinder configuration to 4,950 kW for the nine cylinder configuration. Additionally, the M 32 E generator sets feature the recently-introduced constant speed part load kit for the M 32 E, providing fuel savings up to 10 g/kWh with a 3x33% load step capability.

Wärtsilä and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture, which will take over Wärtsilä’s 2-stroke engine business. Through the agreement, CSSC will own 70% of the business through its affiliate CSSC Investment and Development Co. Ltd, while Wärtsilä will hold a 30% ownership position. The parties will co-operate in 2-stroke engine technology, marketing, sales, and service activities. The parties have agreed to transfer CSSC’s whole position as shareholder to a joint venture established by an entity connected with the Municipal Government of Shanghai and CSSC. Responsibility for servicing Wärtsilä’s 2-stroke engines will remain with Wärtsilä Services through its global network to support customers in a more dedicated and efficient way.

The latest batch of orders for Deltamarin's B.Delta design bulk carriers comes from international shipowners, all to be built in China. The B.Delta43 order by the German ship owner HBC Hamburg Bulk Carriers at CSC Qingshan Shipyard and the B.Delta37 order by the Tunisian ship owner Transbulk at Yangfan shipyard are the latest additions to Deltamarin’s B.Delta series. On top of these new orders, China Navigation Company (CNCo) has exercised an option for another four B.Delta37 vessels at Chengxi Shipyard, d’Amico an option for one more B.Delta37 at Yangfan Shipyard, and M.T.

Switzerland's Hoerbiger technology group & Germany's L’ Orange GmbH establish a new company, D'Blue, to serve the Asian market. Hoerbiger and L’Orange GmbH, Stuttgart, a subsidiary of the Tognum Group, are working together to enhance their product portfolio for the equipping of two- and four-stroke engines in the power class of 100 kW per cylinder and higher. Under the name D’Blue, the two companies will be acting as a system supplier for injection and control technology for large engines with compression ignition—e.g. for ships and locomotives. Deltamarin said that it entered into a contract with CSSC/Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard Co. Ltd. (China) for the design of B.Delta25 bulk carriers, the first contract for the 28,000 dwt bulk carrier. Deltamarin will procure the Basic Design, part of the Detail Design and the Technical Procurement handling, and will also have a site team to ensure the continuity all along the design phases to production. The design is a single hull bulk carrier with shallow draft and good maneuvering capabilities intended for operation in restricted water depths, and very low fuel consumption, which has been the focus of Deltamarin in the design.

Deltamarin has entered into a new contract with Yangfan Group (China) for the design of B.Delta37 Bulk Carriers to be built for d'Amico Societa di Navigazione S.p.A. who placed orders with the Chinese builder for a series of six fixed orders with options for six more vessels. Deltamarin will procure the basic sesign, part of the detail design of the vessels and technical procurement handling and will also have a site team to ensure the continuity all along the design phases to the production. Metra's - parent company of Wärtsilä NSD - reported that its 2Q net sales were $663.6 million, comparable growth 19%. comparable growth was $19.5 million. A driving force has been Wärtsilä NSD, which boasts an orderbook up 41%, and intake of new orders up 79% on same period last year. Wärtsilä NSD posted an operating profit of $18.6 million, which is 3.6% of net sales. Wärtsilä NSD became a wholly owned subsidiary of Metra on February 29, 2000 when Metra acquired the 15.4% minority holding owned by Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani for nearly $100 million. The split-up of the Cummins Wärtsilä joint venture took place during February as well.

Wärtsilä signed an agreement to acquire the assets of Gerhardt Holding Co., Inc. The company specializes in the servicing of control and automation equipment for gas and diesel engines and steam turbines. The operations to be acquired have annual net sales totaling approximately $28.6 million and 128 employees. The purchase price is $10 million. Acquisition is part of Wärtsilä's growth strategy in Service. The family-owned company is headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Gerhardt Holding Co.
