US Army Mariners Rescue Man Overboard

U.S. Army Mariners assigned to 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary) aboard the LCU 2032 Palo Alto rescued an overboard fisherman 10 miles off the western coast of Obi Island, Indonesia Sept. 1, 2023.Sgt. Seth Leonard, a watercraft engineer, was on the bridge of the ship when he observed the typical calm waters in the path of the ship were more active than usual.“I noticed what looked like someone waving their arms, which is the signal for distress in water,” said Leonard.

MAN to Power Thai Navy Newbuilds

MAN Energy Solutions said it has secured a contract to supply the main propulsion engines for two new 41-meter patrol vessels for the Royal Thai Navy. Naval Academy Training Craft Runs on Biofuel

The Naval Academy's Waterfront Readiness Department refueled yard patrol (YP) craft 692 with a biofuel blend Sept. 15 at Naval Support Activity Annapolis, demonstrating the academy's commitment to the Navy's energy goals. The fuel is a 50/50 blend of petroleum and a renewable algae-based biofuel, HRD-76. Last month, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced the Navy's latest initiative to partner with federal and private organizations in creating a sustainable U.S.-based alternative energy source, citing energy independence as necessary to national security. Richard Leung, an engineer with Naval Sea Systems Command who accompanied the shipment of 4,000 gallons of biofuel to Annapolis, also emphasized the need for alternative energy.

This Day in U.S. Coast Guard History - February 18

1842- The House of Representatives passed a resolution requesting the Committee on Commerce to make an inquiry into the expenditures of the Lighthouse Establishment since 1816. This was to explore the possibility of cutting down on expenses, to examine the question of reorganizing the establishment and administration, and also to ascertain whether the establishment should be placed under the Topographical Bureau of the War Department. 1952- During a severe "nor’easter" off the New England coast, the T-2 tankers SSFort Mercer and SS Pendleton each broke in half. Coast Guard vessels, aircraft, and lifeboat stations, working under severe winter conditions, rescued 70 persons from the foundering ships.

RIVGRU 1 Tests Its First RCB Boat

Riverine Group 1 is testing its first Riverine Command Boat, which gives Riverine squadrons the ability to travel not only in rivers, but also out to bays and coastal regions, expanding the capabilities of command and control and the Riverine squadrons' maritime security reach. RCB-1, which the command received in October, has a primary mission of improving maritime security. With its versatility, the boat offers the ability for use as a primary boat in combat missions, patrolling missions, as a combat information center and can even be configured as an ambulance boat. It is designed to land on a variety of shorelines, including solid rock, to drop off and extract personnel from any area.

Swift Assists Vessel in Distress Off Liberian Coast

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Michael Campbell, Africa Partnership Station Public AffairsWhile transiting off the coast of Monrovia, Liberia as part of Africa Partnership Station (APS), March 20 High Speed Vessel 2 Swift received a distress call, relayed from the Maritime Regional Coordination Center (RMCC) in Lisbon, of a Portuguese fishing vessel, the Princesa Di Guadiana, stranded 100 nautical miles off the Liberian Coast with no food, water or fuel. The RMCC contacted Lt. Cmdr. Jose Neto of the Portuguese Navy, who is the APS operations officer aboard the USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), APS flag ship. Cap Lara, a Greek flagged vessel, remained in the vicinity until Swift arrived to assist the Princesa.

Main Engine Lit Off Aboard Makin Island

Seven crew members from pre-commissioning unit (PCU) Makin Island (LHD 8) witnessed a construction milestone Feb. 26, when LHD 8 became the first Navy vessel with a 35,000 horsepower LM2500+ gas turbine engine to successfully complete forward main engine light off (MELO). LHD 8 is part of the Navy's Smart Ship design, which is an effort to reduce manpower through the increased use of technology. Makin is also the first amphibious assault ship equipped with a hybrid electric-drive propulsion system, a 4,160 volt electrical distribution system and an advanced machinery control system (MCS). MSC Moves Vietnam-era Small Boat for Veterans Group

Lee Wahler saw a wrapped boat at the Washington Navy Yard that he thought he recognized. Command, headquartered on the yard, approached the owner of the boat, the Naval Historical Center, to confirm his suspicions. He discovered that he was right. The boat was an MK1 River Patrol Boat, or PBR. patrol officer with a PBR unit during the Vietnam War from 1970 to 1971. He was a member of Task Force 116, the Navy's river patrol force that operated from 1966 to 1971 along the Mekong Delta of South Vietnam. Wahler is a member of the Gamewardens of Vietnam Association, Inc., the oldest Vietnam veterans association, established in 1968 by veterans of Task Force 116. many of its tactics in theater. while denying the Viet Cong access.

USS Pearl Harbor Arrives in Panama

This two week course is designed for E5 and above, or E4 personnel who have taken the Store keeper basic course. The course will assist Storekeepers in regaining skills that may not have been practiced during drill weekend due to non-availability of training platform. Designed for E5 and above, and E4 who have taken the Yeoman (Basic). The purpose of the course is to provide students at the E5/E6 level with training that will refresh their basic Yeoman skills and introduce them to materials specific to the requirements for the next Advancement examination. By providing organized and intensive training, students can make practical application of current Navy administrative concepts and procedures under limited supervision.

Anzio Rescues Stranded Sailors

The guided-missile cruiser USS Anzio (CG 68) responded to a distress call May 20 from Amerauto, a 34-foot sailing vessel. The vessel was slowly sinking and the four crew members were transferred to Anzio. Amerauto was 425 miles from Bermuda when they put out their distress call and 1,700 miles from their next destination of the Azores. The vessel and its Ukrainian crew of four had been underway for five days after departing Bermuda on May 15, heading for the Azores.

NRD NW Holds Training Aboard Lincoln

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) hosted Sailors from Naval Recruiting District (NRD) Portland for the district’s Biannual Recruiter In Charge (RINC) Conference April 9-13. The conference provided recruiters from the region with an opportunity to meet and discuss important issues facing their community, as well as to receive training and meet other recruiters from the district. “This represents an opportunity to get all my frontline supervisors from five states together and have them interact and share ideas,” said NRD Portland’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Caroline Nielson. Chief Navy Counselor Steve Schaljo said that about 40 Sailors, including RINCs, supervising officers and guest lecturers attended the conference which was held in Lincoln’s squadron ready rooms.

U.S. Mobile Training Team Teaches Djiboutian Navy

Personnel from the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa’s (CJTF-HOA) Mobile Training Team (MTT) conducted Preventive Maintenance Systems (PMS) training March 28 with the Djiboutian Navy. The classroom instruction gives Djiboutian Sailors the opportunity to learn high-quality engineering practices for their vessels. The training consisted of setting up and adhering to maintenance schedules. “Introducing them to the Preventive Maintenance System we use on our ships will help them better do their jobs, increase the life expectancy of their equipment and encourage them to be proactive vice reactive when it comes to doing required maintenance,” said Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class (SC) William Hawkins III. Ocean 6 Conducts Operations with BOXESG

Combined Task Force (CTF) 158 command and control center’s afloat forward staging base, known as Ocean 6, conducted maritime security operations (MSO) in the North Persian Gulf with USS Boxer (LHD 4) Expeditionary Strike Group (BOXESG), Nov. 21-24. Ocean 6, a converted civilian barge, is a central command and control hub for MSO in the North Persian Gulf. U.S. Sailors assigned to Ocean 6 coordinate all MSO activity with coalition ships in the North Persian Gulf. Its primary mission is the protection of Iraq’s oil platforms by coordinating U.S. and coalition forces for optimum defense, tactical operations and intelligence gathering in the region.

USS Grasp Decommissioned, Transferred to Military Sealift Command

The recovery and salvage ship USS Grasp (ARS 51) was decommissioned after 20 years of service and transferred to Military Sealift Command (MSC) in a ceremony at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek Jan. 19. Past and present crew members attended the 11 a.m. ceremony to say farewell to the ship. “There’s always a little bit of sadness at the end of a career,” said Grasp’s executive officer Lt. Cmdr. As a U.S. Navy ship, Grasp had a crew of approximately 100 Sailors. As an MSC asset, the ship will now have a crew of 26 civilian mariners and four enlisted military personnel. According to many on board, the relatively small crew enabled them to come together more so than on other ships.
