Cargoes have come off ships at sea it seems like forever. Some years ago a ship suffered a casualty transiting the English Channel in a storm. Much of its cargo of lumber and other floating items washed ashore on the southwest English coast. Before the authorities could arrive, enterprising local residents gathered it up.Nowadays, the majority of non-bulk cargo is carried in containers. Container ships have gotten larger and are capable of carrying thousands and thousands of containers. The ships have greater length, greater breadth, and greater draft. They also have greater air draft.

Marine Robots Survey D-Day Rehearsal Wreckage

Mission commemorates 70th anniversary of World War II Tragedy. A mission off the coast of South Devon, England has surveyed two U.S. Landing Ship Tanks (LSTs) that were torpedoed and sunk during the D-Day rehearsal Exercise Tiger on April 28, 1944. Using state-of-the-art autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology to collect data from the wreckage site, the mission has produced the first high-definition sonar images of this World War II tragedy. This was the first time in history that an AUV had surveyed the area. The mission, which was executed by Hydroid, Inc., a subsidiary of Kongsberg Maritime and the leading manufacturer of AUVs, with additional data provided by the Royal Navy's Maritime Autonomous System Trials Team (MASTT), commemorates the 70th anniversary of Exercise Tiger.

Versatile Boat With Specialized Options

When one hears “off shore energy” in the marine sector, it is the petroleum industry that comes most readily to mind. Now a Shetland vessel chartering company has taken delivery of a boat with specialized equipment to support the maintenance of off shore wind-powered electrical generating units. Serving a function similar to that of Gulf of Mexico jack-up boats the new vessel has two 15-meter spud legs to hold it in position while servicing the wind mills. The portside push bows have a gap to suit the four-meter base of wind-farm piles, allowing the vessel to push up against the pile without fear of sliding off. The harder you push the less motion is felt at the bow of the vessel therefore allowing the safe transfer of personnel and heavy parts…

Damaged Ship Threatens Pollution

A damaged container ship, off the English coast and listing badly, has started to shed some of its load of cargo containers in heavy winds. Coastguards said they were on alert because the vessel could break up. The stricken MSC Napoli was deliberately run aground in waters close to Sidmouth, southwest England, after it was damaged during a storm on Thursday. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has confirmed two of the containers are carrying dangerous materials, including battery acid and perfume, and that oil has also leaked onto the shore. Navy helicopters rescued the vessel's 26 crew members in rough seas, 45 miles off Lizard Point on England's southwest tip.
