USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) departed Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) for Sea Trials July 21 following a 10-month Planned Incremental Availability (PIA). Truman's Commanding Officer, Capt. Ryan B. Scholl, praised ship forces, NNSY and civilian contractors for working together to stay on schedule and making an on-time departure from the shipyard. The risk of cyber attacks on vessels at sea continues to be significant, and it’s not going away any time soon. Each year, it seems, there are more and more reports of hacks that have resulted in loss of critical data, financial loss or problems with IT systems or shipborne systems functionality. Shipowners have been reluctant to share information on actual or attempted breaches for fear of being identified. However, there’s no shortage of examples of cyber attacks on vessels.

Sea trials for the newly refurbished U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) commenced on October 5, following a 20-month Extended Planned Incremental Availability (EPIA) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. Northrop Grumman Corporation informs it has completed the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) program's design, development and limited deployment phase for the U.S. Navy. CANES is a programmatic and technical consolidation of five legacy shipboard network programs. CANES provides a modern, common computing environment across the fleet to upgrade cybersecurity, command and control, communications and intelligence (C4I) and streamline logistics. Since winning the contract for the design and limited-production run for CANES in early 2012, Northrop Grumman has delivered 37 shipsets for various ship classes. The company leveraged its cyber expertise to ensure cyber-robust CANES systems.

Grumman Corporation informs it has been selected by the US Navy as one of five contractors for the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) full deployment production contract to upgrade cybersecurity, command and control, communications and intelligence (C4I) systems across the fleet. The indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity multiple award contract has a potential value of $2.5 billion over eight years. "Northrop Grumman is deeply committed to helping the Navy transform its afloat C4I computers and networks into a single integrated, cyber-protected computing network," said Sam Abbate, vice president and general manager, command and control division, Northrop Grumman Information Systems.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) has today departed the dry dock at Puget Sound Naval Shipyards and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF) . The event marked the conclusion of the 9-month dry dock portion of Stennis’ Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) maintenance period. “This milestone is a big win, not just for the Stennis and PSNS & IMF team, but also for the Navy,” said Stennis’ commanding officer, Capt. Michael Wettlaufer. To date, Stennis and PSNS & IMF personnel completed more than 11,000 critical repair jobs including the restoration of Stennis’ multi-ton propellers, shafts and rudders, as well as refurbishing all four aircraft catapults.

The U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman Corporation have installed Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) on the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS McCampbell. The installation was completed during the ship's approximate five-month scheduled maintenance at U.S. Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan. Prior to installation, Northrop Grumman produced, integrated and tested the CANES system and delivered it for acceptance to the Tactical Networks Program Office, Program Executive Office of Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I).

Serco Inc wins production & engineering services contract in support of United States Navy's Automated Digital Network Systems (ADNS). The five year contract exercises a one-year base period and four one-year option periods, with a total value of $68 million, if all options are exercised. Hawaii Sen. Daniel Inouye, Lt. Gov. James Aiona, and Pacific Fleet Commander Adm. Gary Roughead joined past and current crew members of USS Honolulu (SSN 718) to bid farewell to the nuclear-powered attack submarine at a ceremony April 15, at Naval Station Pearl Harbor. Keynote speaker, U.S. 7th Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Jonathan Greenert, who commanded Honolulu from 1991 to 1993, said the submarine performed exceptionally well throughout its career. “She was consistently the most reliable ship in the squadron, whatever squadron she was in," he said. Inouye said Honolulu, and all other Los Angeles-class submarines, have served the Navy in a variety of roles. “These submarines constituted the front lines during the Cold War," he said.
