Viikki Delivered to ESL Shipping
Finland’s ESL Shipping, an Aspo Group company, has taken delivery of liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled bulker Viikki from the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China.Viikki's sister ship Haaga was delivered on August 20. The 160-meter, LNG-fueled vessel of 25,600 dwt emits over 50 percent less carbon dioxide than the previous generation of vessels.Like its sister ship Haaga, Viikki will first head from the shipyard to Japan, from where it will arrive fully laden at the Baltic Sea approximately at the end of October.

Future Frigates: Naval Group Starts Equipment Acquisition
Naval Group has started to select the first equipment suppliers for the five future intermediate-size frigates (FTI) intended for the French Ministry of Defense. In the framework of the execution of the contract awarded by the French Defence Procurement Agency in April 2017, Naval Group initiated its process of selecting the program's industrial suppliers for the five future intermediate-size frigates, the first of which will be delivered to the French Navy in 2023. "We expect a lot from our suppliers," said Frédéric Massa, Director of Naval Group Purchasing.
Royal IHC Completes Two-year Dredger Overhaul
The self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) Huta 14 has resumed operations for Saudi Arabian owner Huta Marine following two-years of renovation work performed by Royal IHC. The overhaul, which involved replacing Huta 14’s three large diesel engines, as well as integrating an electrical installation for the underwater pump engine and drive, was completed by IHC Middle East based in Dubai with support from IHC’s Asset Upgrade Services department in The Netherlands. Interferry: Diverse Operations Common Successes
In October the world’s ferry operators gathered in Split Croatia for the Forty Second Annual Interferry Conference. The 470 or so delegates represented 210 operators and support companies from 27 countries. A trade show included firms from around the world including shipbuilders, naval architects, equipment suppliers, training and others of the diverse group that make up the ferry industry. In a panel on Mediterranean Ferries, Philippe Holthof, of the Belgian-based Shipax explained the huge size and complexity of the fleet.

Following the International Maritime Organization (IMO) ratifications of the ballast water and exhaust gas treaties, government-owned Export Credit Norway offers financing to international vessel owners who purchase retrofit equipment from Norwegian suppliers. The Norwegian export credit agency Export Credit Norway has assembled a specialized team and tailor-made financing solution to support vessel owners who need to retrofit equipment such as gas exhaust cleaning systems, ballast water treatment systems and new coating systems.

“No new fishing vessel has been (added) during the period,” says the email we get from Japan’s largest seafood company, Maruha Nichiro Corp. A year earlier, they had bought shares in New Zealand outfit, Sanford, which had just chartered a Nordic-looking vessel. Seafood rival, Nissui, had just done the same, buying New Zealand and Nordic.
