ESL Uses Multiple Modes to Cut Carbon Emissions 20%

Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) reports that it has cut 20% emissions on 75% of its fleet using a multi-prong approach of equipment technology and operational technique.A central aspect of the program involved a re-design of ESL’s vessels' propellers. In collaboration with designers from Mecklenburger Metallguss GmbH (MMG), ESL and the Peter Döhle group jointly developed and installed upgraded propellers on each ship. The use of these propellers reportedly yielded a significant improvement in overall flow and efficiency.

Making Hydrogen Work: Demo Project in San Francisco Port

Hornblower Energy LLC, in partnership with the Port of San Franciso, the U.S. Department of Energy and six corporate partners, including Air Liquide and Glosten, is leading a project to demonstrate the feasibility and viability of using hydrogen (H2) as a maritime fuel.The project is located at Pier 68 in San Francisco. DOE selected the project for funding in 2020. It’s supposed to be completed in 2025 but there are important decision dates before then. So far, project activities have concentrated on planning and modeling.

Russia Says It Is Assisting Exports of Ukrainian Foodstuffs via Azov Sea

Los Angeles Twin Ports Aim Zero-Emissions

The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have released a report on the current state of clean cargo-handling equipment technology as they begin working toward the Clean Air Action Plan’s 2030 goal of a zero-emissions fleet at the nation’s largest seaport complex.A draft assessment was released in April. It examined the current state of technology, operational characteristics, economic considerations, infrastructure availability and commercial readiness relating to cleaner cargo-handling equipment. The updated report incorporates community feedback that is available at this link.The CAAP also has a goal to transform its fleet of drayage trucks to zero-emissions by 2035.

Tema Port T3 Welcomes First Cargo Vessel

The first commercial vessel, Maersk Cape Coast has docked at the Terminal 3 at Tema Port after 3 years of expansion and modernization works to complete the first two berths.The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, which operates the harbor is located along the Gulf of Guinea, said that with the state-of-the-art technology and equipment, 1,427 containers were discharged and 730 containers loaded.Incidentally, Maersk Cape Coast was inaugurated and christened at the port of Tema in 2011. Wärtsilä to Supply Marine Simulators in Southampton

ICHCA, IAPH Joins for World Ports Sustainability Program

ICHCA International, the global NGO and membership association for cargo handling operations, technical, HSSE and risk professionals has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH) to pursue cooperative projects of mutual interest. This includes the sharing of the research and findings of ICHCA’s Technical Panel (ITP) with the IAPH membership through its own working groups. The ICHCA Technical Panel has recently launched four new working groups on Dangerous Goods, Digital & Innovation, Straddle Carrier Safety and Dry Bulk Cargoes. LA, Long Beach Ports Unveil Strategies to Cut GHG

Aggressively deploying zero and near-zero emission trucks and cargo-handling equipment and expanding programs that reduce ship emissions are among the core strategies the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are proposing for the next version of San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP). Proposals also focus on freight infrastructure investment, innovation and technology to improve supply chain efficiency, comprehensive energy planning, and increased advocacy for stricter emissions standards and government incentives to help pay for projects that advance testing and commercialization of zero and near-zero emission vehicles. The updated CAAP provides one of California’s first opportunities to implement the vision laid out in the State’s Sustainable Freight Action Plan.

Work Begins on $1.6 bln Container Terminal at Jebel Ali Port

DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem announced the start of construction work on a brand new container terminal at Jebel Ali Port, Dubai. Phase 1 of the Container Terminal 4 (T4) project will deliver new capacity of 3.1 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) by 2018, taking Jebel Ali Port’s total capacity to 22.1 million TEU. He also served as a marine engineer aboard Exxon USA’s domestic tanker fleet from 1980 to 1985. With age comes perspective, and in my 20 plus years reporting on this industry I have seen my fair share of regulation that has served to ‘raise the hackles’ of ship owners. It is quite simple really; new regulation often means new procedure, new design, new equipment and new costs. With the possible exception of the new rules in the wake of the Exxon Valdez which mandated double hulls on tankers, the Ballast Water Management System issue is the most acrimonious debate I have witnessed.

Voith Hydropower Equipment for Thailand's Storage Plant

Voith has been awarded a new contract to supply the complete electromechanical equipment for a pumped storage power plant in Thailand. The order for the extension of the Lam Ta Khong hydropower plant includes the supply of two motor-generators, two 255 MW vertical pump turbines, the automation systems as well as the electrical and mechanical balance-of-plant systems. The contract has been awarded by the Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and has a total value of around €50 million. Lam Ta Khong is the first pumped storage plant equipped by Voith in Southeast Asia and another milestone for the company on this promising hydropower market.

CDLSE Reaches Full Operational Capability

DSME Open Offshore Drill Simulator

Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) opens a drilling and well control simulation laboratory. The DSME R&D Institute has perfectly recreated a drill ship and semi-rig control room in the DSME Seoul office building. This drilling simulator development is the first in Korea and the laboratory is almost identical to the drilling control room on drill ships and semi-rigs. By using this simulator, people can experience lifelike drilling equipment control. There is a 3D display and guide system so people are able to experience a virtual tour of a semi-rig. Through the development of the simulator laboratory, DSME has established itself as an active player in the development of offshore plant equipment technology which was an area previously monopolized by U.S.
