Erik Thun Orders Four New Vessels

Swedish shipping company Erik Thun has ordered four new vessels, including two methanol-ready coastal tankers and two next-generation multi-purpose dry cargo vessels.The vessels will be built by Shipsveerf Ferus Smit in the Netherlands, bringing the current orderbook from Shipveerf Ferus Smit up to 14 vessels.The contracts cover two multi-purpose dry cargo vessels with 5100 mts dwt and Ice class 1B, which are next generation Lake Vanern Max fit for operating Lake Vänern in Sweden.The

Erik Thun Unveils New Lake Vanern MAX Bulk Carrier Series

Sweden’s Erik Thun Group has unveiled its next generation battery-hybrid, dry cargo vessel series being built at Shipyard Ferus Smit in the Netherlands.The Lake Vanern Max is hybrid, with a battery pack for peak shaving and power smoothening, reducing the reliance on auxiliary engines for electricity generation. The vessel is designed to stay at anchor without using auxiliary engines. Shore connection enables clean and silent port operations and allows the vessel to shut down all engines onboard

Thun Orders Product Tanker at Ferus Smit

Thun Tankers, part of the Swedish shipping company Erik Thun Group, said it ordered a second 4,250-deadweight product tanker from Dutch shipbuilder Scheepswerf Ferus Smit, sceduled for delivery in May 2022.The newbuild, together with its previously ordered sister ship due in November this year, will be operated under long-term charter with U.K.-based Geos Group.Both 79.9-meter vessels will be built with NAABSA design (Not Always Afloat But Safely Aground), meaning they'll be able to call tidal restricted niche ports.

Thun Tankers Adds New Tanker to Gothia

Swedish shipping company Thun Tankers has taken delivery of the third of five L-class product tankers from China’s Avic Dingheng. Just like her sister ships, Thun Lidkoping and Thun London, the new vessel Thun Liverpool will enter the Gothia Tanker Alliance network.Thun Tankers took delivery of the 18,650-dead-weight product tanker on Wednesday (November 13).The L-class series have been designed and developed in-house, using the Erik Thun group’s long experience of building sustainable, high quality vessels.Focus on environmental care, new regulations and customers’ needs has been key in the design and building process of this vessel type.The new tanker will enter into the Gothia Tanker Alliance network with crewing and technical management done by MF Shipping Group.

Thun Orders New Tanker for Geos Charter

Swedish shipping company Thun Tankers BV has placed an order for a 4,250 dwt product tanker at Dutch Ferus Smit shipyard.The ordered tanker will be delivered October 2020 and enter into a long term agreement with UK based Geos Group Ltd, said the coastal shipping company.The vessel will be built with “NAABSA” – Not Always Afloat But Safely Aground – design being able to call tidal restricted niche ports.Thun’s long experience of building resource efficient, high quality vessels has been used in the design process.Focus has been to maximize the vessel´s cargo intake and increase in-port performance; with the scope to allow further increased cargo lot sizes going into restricted niche ports.

Thun Tankers Takes Delivery of Two Vessels

The Swedish tanker operator Thun Tankers takes delivery of first L-Class and second E-Class on the same day. Both vessels will enter the Gothia Tanker Alliance network.On May 9th, Thun Tankers took delivery of the 18,650 deadweight product tanker “Thun Lidkoping”. This L-Class vessel is the first in a series of five resource efficient, high quality tankers built by Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding Ltd in China.On the same day, the 8,000 deadweight “Thun Evolve” was delivered to Thun Tankers by Ferus Smit BV in the Netherlands. The dual fuelled vessel, that will use natural gas or biogas as fuel, is the second in a series of four ordered E-Class tankers.

Dual Fueled Cement Carrier Christened

The christening and launch of the 8,000 deadweight, dual fueled cement carrier M/V Shetland took place  at the Ferus Smit yard in Westerbroek.M.V. Shetland is the third dedicated cement carrier built for JT Cement AS, a joint venture between KGJ Cement, NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers Ltd and Erik Thun AB. Shetland is a sister vessel of the M/V Ireland and M/V Greenland.The vessel is equipped with an LNG fuelled propulsion system. "This unique design incorporates a 200 m3 pressurised LNG tank positioned in the foreship," it said in a press release.While sailing on LNG, the vessel will meet the most stringent emission criteria, as well as new norms that might be in place in futures for environmental sensitive areas

Furetank Orders Dual Fuel Product Tanker

Sweden's Furetank Rederi AB has signed a contract for one 17,999 dwt dual fuel product tanker at Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding.The agreement with the yard includes an option for one further vessel, said a press release from the provider of marine transportation services through product and chemical tankers.The new vessel will be identical with the series of six sister vessels built by Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding for Furetank Rederi AB, Rederi AB Älvtank and Erik Thun AB during 2018‐2019.All vessels are designed with special focus on minimal impact on the environment and has dual fuel capability, run on LNG and has several features that reduce fuel and energy consumption resulting in extensively lower emissions of CO2

Ferus Smit Launches Arklow Wind

Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit successfully launched ‘Arklow Wind’ at the Ferus Smit yard in Leer."M.V. Arklow Wind is the second vessel in a series of 4 that will be delivered to our client from the city of Arklow, Ireland," said a press release.By design, Arklow Wind (which will sail under the Irish Flag) is an enlarged version of the 8500 DWT ships that we have delivered to Arklow Shipping in the past.In comparison with these vessels, Arklow Wind has almost twice the carrying capacity of 16500 DWT. She is equipped with a 3840kW main engine in order to achieve low fuel consumption.Meanwhile, Ferus Smit informed that it  will launch M.V. ‘Shetland’ at the Ferus Smit Westerbroek Yard on 11th of April.M.V.

Gothia Tanker Alliance Delivers Fure Valö

Europe's leading network for smaller and intermediate size tankers Gothia Tanker Alliance announced the delivery of the fourth vessel LNG-fueled vessel  Fure Valö.The vessel was named on the 17th of November and delivered to owners Furetank on November 27, the company tweeted. Fure Valö has been delivered at the Chinese Avic Dingheng shipyard.Fure Valö is vessel number four in a the serie of six climate smart, high quality new buildings that will join the Gothia Tanker Alliance.It is a part of the six-vessel series ordered by the Gothia Tanker Alliance members Furetank, Älvtank and Erik Thun, Gothia Tanker Alliance said.Furetank Rederi AB, Rederi AB Älvtank and Thun Tankers BV are building six intermediate size tankers at Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding Ltd.

Skangas Inks LNG Bunker Deal with Gothia Tanker Alliance

Skangas entered into an agreement with parts of the Gothia Tanker Alliance to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel.The new agreement comprises current as well as new vessels with LNG propulsion soon to come, said a press release from the supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Nordic markets.The main Swedish shipping companies that will get the advantage of the supply agreement with Skangas are Furetank Rederi AB, Erik Thun AB and Rederi AB Älvtank. These shipping companies have invested in total six new LNG fueled vessels and together with the existing Fure West they are all jointly operated by the Gothia Tanker Alliance.The Swedish Shipowners’ Association is actively contributing to reduce any negative environmental impact of the shipping industry.

Sweden: A Pioneering Nation in Green Shipping

Sweden is a role model for the global shipping community, and other countries have a great deal to learn from the work being done by the Swedish shipping industry to reduce emissions. This is one of the findings in a new report – Decarbonising Maritime Transport: The Case of Sweden – where efforts aimed at bringing about a greener shipping sector in Sweden are described as a “success story”. OECD’s International Transport Forum (ITF) published a new report –  Decarbonising Maritime Transport: The Case of Sweden. The report examines the various elements which it is stated have put Swedish shipping firmly at the forefront environmentally. “We are extremely proud that Swedish shipping has been highlighted in this way by such an eminent organisation.

Ferus Smit Launches Bulk Carrier for Erik Thun

Shipbuilder Ferus Smit said it has launched newbuild bulk carrier Snow Crystal on October 21 at its shipyard in Westerbroek, Netherlands. Snow Crystal (Ferus Smit newbuild 445) is the first ship in a series of two for Swedish ship owner Erik Thun AB. Designed for specific trades in the Baltic region, the vessels are “mini bulkers” with two cargo holds and ice class 1A, the builder said. The breadth of the ships is limited to 13.35 meters, in order to fit into the locks of the Trollhattan Canal – which will only be applicable for Snow Crystal.

Thun Tankers Orders another Newbuild

Thun Tankers said it has declared an option for a fifth tanker to be added to the previously contracted four 17,500 dwt IMO II product/chemical tankers on order at Avic Dingheng Shipbuilding Ltd in China. Wärtsilä Dual-fuel Engines for Tanker Newbuilds

Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to supply the engines, propellers and fuel supply systems for four new tanker vessels. The ships will run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel, and are being built at the Scheepswerf Ferus Smit yard in the Netherlands for Sweden based Erik Thun AB. The order with Wärtsilä was booked in the first quarter of 2017. In 2014, the Scheepswerf Ferus Smit yard built two cement carriers on behalf of Erik Thun AB. These are now operated by JT Cement; a joint venture company with Norway based KG Jebsen Cement.

Since it started publishing in 1939, Maritime Reporter & Engineering News has recognized excellence in ship construction. Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit delivered what it is calling the world’s first LNG-powered cement tanker, MV Greenland. The delivery was preceded by an extensive program of trials and tests in which the proper working and safety of all systems was verified. On December 23, MV Greenland left the harbor of Delfzijl on its first commercial voyage to Rostock where it was scheduled to receive its first cement load. M.V.

Second LNG-powered Cement Carrier Delivered

Dutch shipbuilder Ferus Smit has delivered the second LNG-powered cement carrier, MV Ireland, to owners JT Cement, a joint venture between Swedish shipping company Erik Thun AB and Norway’s KG Jebsen Cement. MV Ireland, along with sister vessel MV Greenland delivered in December 2015, are the first ever dry cargo vessels with an LNG fuelled propulsion system and LNG tanks integrated inside the hull, the builder said. The newbuild’s design incorporates a pressurized LNG tank positioned in the foreship.

Sea trials aboard Greenland, the world’s first LNG-fuelled short-sea dry bulk vessel, have validated the performance of Thordon Bearings COMPAC propeller shaft solution, indicating that seawater-lubricated bearing systems are applicable to all ship types and are definitely here to stay. The first unique LNG powered ship that Ferus Smit has on order for Erik Thun A.B. will be built and equipped as a dedicated cement carrier. The ship will be delivered to the joint venture JT cement, in which Erik Thun AB cooperates with KG Jebsen Cement from Norway. There is an option for a second vessel of the same design. The vessels cargo system will consist of a fully automated cement loading and unloading system, based on fluidization of cement by means of compressed air. The cargo system is designed and delivered by KGJ cement, a company also part of the KG Jebsen group.
