GAC Offers African Oil & Gas Market Insights to Houston

The GAC Group says it is bringing its African market knowledge to US clients in and around the global energy hub of Houston, Texas, with the posting of Gerrit Laubscher, Business Development Manager - Oil & Gas for Sub-Saharan Africa, to share his expertise and focus on promoting trade and cooperation between key energy players in the USA and African oil producing countries. From the GAC North America Logistics (formerly known as GEMS) base in Houston, Gerrit will serve as a bridge between the two regions, offering regional expertise and guidance, in-depth local insight and market intelligence direct to customers looking to work in Sub-Saharan Africa. He will work closely with GAC’s Houston oil & gas team to broaden the exposure of global clients in his home market.

Monster Barge in Port Abidjan Serviced by GAC-OMA

The massive installation barge 'Hyundai 60' weighs in at 34,125t, is 187m long, equipped with a 1,800t crane, and was earlier engaged in pipe-laying & offshore installation works off the coast of Escravos. GAC Nigeria, with its local partner OMA Ivory Coast. says it provided a range of ship agency, husbandry & logistics services for her and her attendant fleet of support vessels in the Port of Abidjan. The barge was demobilised and moved to Abidjan for maintenance work while she's being held in stand-by until she is needed for the next phase starting in October 2014. Upon arrival, GAC worked with TRACE-certified local partner OMA Ivory Coast to provide the range of agency, supplies, crew and logistics support the 'Hyundai 60' needed for her stay in port.

GAC-OMA Extends Ivory Coast Shipping & Logistics Service

GAC is further strengthening its presence in West Africa with the extension of the GAC-OMA network agreement to include the Ivory Coast. The extension of the network comes after the Ivory Coast's return to stability in late 2011 and its rapid re-establishment as one of the world’s leading cocoa producers. Exports of other products such as palm oil, coffee, some petroleum products, bananas, pineapples, cotton and fish are contributing to forecast year-on-year GDP growth of about 8%. GAC-OMA Ivory Coast supports that growth with a complete range of shipping and logistics services from its main office in the country’s main port city, Abidjan, strategically located between the port and airport. In West Africa, the GAC Group also has an established presence in Nigeria, Angola and Congo.

GAC Re-locates Regional Office to Capetown

The GAC Group's Regional Office for Africa, Russia and Central Asia has relocated from Cairo to Cape Town in South Africa. transport, communication and energy sectors are factors which provided a strong motivation for the relocation. The Regional Office will assist the individual GAC companies' in the Region to implement their strategies. Cape Town is the hub for many oil & gas customers in Sub-Saharan Africa and the relocation of the office better places the team to support this niche market.

Agreement Strengthens GAC’s West African Presence

GAC has signed a Global Network Agency (GNA) agreement for ports in Ghana, Togo and Benin with Oil and Marine Agencies (OMA) Ltd, effective from 1 January 2013, as part of the Group's strategic expansion in West Africa. The two companies have been working together to provide a range of shipping and logistics services since June 2010. OMA is an established leader in agency and support services for port operations in West Africa, having started from its home port of Lome in Togo 30 years ago. In 2007, it expanded to other countries in the region, including Benin and Ghana, with a base in the Ivory Coast on the cards for 2013. Under the agreement with GAC, it covers all ports in Ghana, Togo and Benin.

GAC Keeps Shipping Moving in Egypt

As political developments continue to unfold in Egypt, GAC is playing its part in keeping shipping moving in the country, Group Vice President for Africa, Russia & Central Asia, Erland Ebbersten is assuring clients. Despite the unrest, transits through the all-important Suez Canal have continued as normal, and port operations are being conducted as much as possible under the circumstances, he said from his Cairo office. The biggest challenge that GAC and its clients faced was the shut-down of access to internet and mobile phone networks during the first week of the crisis. “Alternative means of keeping in touch with clients had to be immediately established,” said Ebbersten.

Global shipping, logistics and marine services group GAC has announced the merger of its UK operations to better meet clients’ needs, effective 1 January 2010. Shipping services company GAC-OBC, with more than 20 offices throughout the UK, becomes GAC Shipping (UK) Ltd, alongside GAC Logistics (UK) Ltd, GAC’s UK freight forwarding arm.
