British Frigate Escorts Russian Ships through English Channel

A British frigate escorted Russian ships through the English Channel on Monday, Britain’s defense ministry said, adding that it was the latest sign of an upsurge in Russian naval activity near UK waters over the festive period. Liability when Both Vessels Violate COLREGS

The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld the determination of the federal district court regarding allocation of liability in a collision case where both ships had violated the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). In the instant case, defendant’s tanker was entering Puget Sound. In accordance with federal law, it hired two of plaintiff’s vessels to provide escort service. In accordance with the pre-arranged transit plan, one of the escort vessels was to be tethered to the stern of the tanker and the other escort vessel was to position itself on the tanker’s port shoulder. Robert Allan Completes Design for Escort Tug

Robert Allan Ltd. has completed the design for a major new escort tug for Norwegian tug owners Johannes Østensjø dy AS of Haugesund. The tug will be dedicated to tanker escort operations on the west coast or Norway. The construction contract has been awarded to Astilleros Zamakona A/S of Vizcaya-Bilbao, Spain, with an expected delivery in early 2000. The tug will be built in accordance with DNV regulations as an escort tug, with fire-fighter I and oil recovery certification. It is equipped with the highest standard of oil spill containment and recovery equipment, all of which is stowed in a large "garage" adjacent to the enclosed winch room. A large knuckle-boom crane will serve to launch and recover the equipment, as well as handle deck equipment and stores.

Escort Tugs in San Francisco Bay

Responding to the oil spills of the Exxon Valdez in 1989 and the American Trader in 1990, California enacted the Lempert-Keene-Seastrand Oil Spill Prevention and Response Act (OPA 90). Thus, an evaluation of tractor tug development and construction on the west coast led to tugs providing bollard pulls of +/-90 tons. San Francisco Marine Exchange (SFMX), a non-profit whose maritime history in San Francisco dates back to 1849, acts on behalf of California’s Office of Oil Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR). They help to monitor the compliance of these OSPR regulations.

Although the U.S. Navy ships joined HX-150, which left port escorted by British ships on 16th, the official escort duty began on 18th. 1947 - National Security Act becomes effective.

Voith Turbo Schneider Propulsion to Equip Escort Vessels with VSP

Oil wells in the North Sea and the North Atlantic are still bubbling with Black Gold. With two new high-performance Voith Water Tractors, the harbor authority of the Shetland Isles (Shetland Island Council) is set to widen its opportunities and will soon be able to unload even larger oil tankers in the harbor of Sullom Voe at affordable cost. In spring 2010, the two new vessels will enter service at the most northern point of Scotland. The two escort vessels will be built in Spain by Union Naval Valencia. With 77 tons bollard pull ahead and 71 tons bollard pull astern, they are in the highest output class for this type of Escort Voith Water Tractors. Each of the two Voith Water Tractors is fitted with two electronically controlled Voith Schneider Propellers size 36R6/255-2.

Edison Chouest to Build 13 Damen Tugs

Marine transportation provider and the United States’ largest operator of OSVs, Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO), has teamed up with Damen to build 13 heavy duty mooring assistance and escort tugs. The vessels will be built in the U.S. using ECO’s network of five shipyards with support from Damen under its Technical Cooperation program. The new tugs will be deployed on two major maritime projects for which ECO has recently won contracts. The first of these is a contract that ECO won earlier this year with a new Corpus Christi based LNG export terminal.

BV Accepts Standardized CFD Predictions

Bureau Veritas (BV) has authorized on an “Approval in Principle” basis a new Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)-based performance prediction methodology developed by Robert Allan Ltd. as the basis for formally granting the service notation Escort Tug. While previously some classification societies have approved computer-based escort predictions for new tugs on a case by case basis, the majority still require a full-scale trial before issuing an escort notation and the associated escort numeral.

Pirates Attack EU NAVFOR Warship

During the night of November 6, the EU NAVFOR warship SPS Infanta Cristina was attacked off the East coast of Somalia by a vessel identified as the MV IZUMI, a ship that had itself been pirated on 10 October. The EU NAVFOR warship had been escorting the MV Petra 1, which had been chartered by the African Union Military Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), at the time. This is the first ever attack on an EU warship conducting an AMISOM escort. During the incident, the Spanish warship increased speed and maneuvered immediately in order to place herself between MV Izumi and her escort.

The U.S. Patent Office has  issued Patent s/n 9,056,655 to inventors Brandon Durar (JonRie Marine Winches) and Gregory Castleman (Castleman Maritime) for A Staple Torque Aligning Winch System for Escort Tugs. Coast Guard Frees Vessels Frozen on the Hudson

The U.S. Coast Guard helped free two vessels beset by ice in the Hudson River this week as frigid temperatures in the U.S. Northeast continue to hamper the region’s commercial shipping. A Coast Guard icebreaker vessel freed tug Stephanie Dann near Kingston, N.Y. on Tuesday, as well as the tug Brooklyn stuck in ice near Saugerties, N.Y. on Sunday. The 140-foot icebreaking tug Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay was able to clear an area for Stephanie Dann to continue its transit after the tug had been beset by ice for a full night.

USCG Escorts Supercarrier through Puget Sound

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) escorted U.S. Navy supercarrier USS Nimitz during the carrier crew’s homeport shift from Naval Base Everett, Wash., to Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton, Wash., Jan. 13, 2015, the USCG reported. The crews of the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutters Osprey and Swordfish, as well as two Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team Seattle small boats, were involved in the escort. Both the Coast Guard and Navy crews had to keep a stern lookout as they navigated the foggy Puget Sound waterways, the USCG said.

Arctic Offshore Rig Gets USCG Escort

U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) crews escorted heavy lift ship Blue Marlin as it toted a controversial 38,000-metric-ton drilling rig into Port Angeles, Wash., Friday. Blue Marlin, Dockwise’s 674-foot semi-submersible heavy lift ship, was escorted into its anchorage location in Port Angeles while carrying Polar Pioneer, a column-stabilized offshore drilling rig expected to be a key piece in Arctic operations for Royal Dutch Shell. Six Greenpeace activists climbed the rig while in transit on April 6 approximately 750 miles northwest of Hawaii following the U.S. Dept.

'CNS Mianyang' takes over escort duties of a World Food Programme (WFP) aid ship from Italian warship 'ITS Zeffiro'. The Italian warship had been escorting the WFP vessel since she entered the pirate High Risk Area in the Western Indian Ocean a few days earlier. At an agreed location, CNS Mianyang took over the duty to escort through the Gulf of Aden to Djibouti. The WFP ship being due to arrive in the African port shortly. Emergency Response Tug Helping Escort Container Ship

The Gladiator, the state-funded seasonal emergency response tug stationed at Neah Bay, will help escort the 918-ft. container vessel APL Australia part way through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The container ship lost its secondary hydraulic steering system, but its primary steering system is functional. Due to high winds and other unfavorable sea and weather conditions, the Coast Guard today issued a Captain of the Port order requiring a tug escort for the container ship all the way to its destination in Seattle. The Gladiator will meet the APL Australia near the entrance to the Strait of Juan de Fuca and provide escort halfway to Port Angeles. A different tug will escort the ship into Seattle. The APL Australia left Hong Kong on Jan.

Eastern Delivers Escort Tug to Bay-Houston Towing

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. announced the delivery of the Escort Tug ZYANA K for Bay-Houston Towing Co. on May 5, 2016. This series of Robert Allan, LTD. (RAL) designed Z-Tech 2400 Class Terminal & Escort Tugs is currently under construction at Eastern’s Nelson Street facility. The ZYANA K (ESG Hull #238) is the second in a series of four Z-Tech Class Terminal & Escort Tugs being constructed for Bay-Houston Towing Co. The H. DOUGLAS M (ESG Hull #236), the lead vessel in the series, delivered on February 5, 2016.
