Propulsion Decisions or Smoke on The Water?

In no uncertain terms, the goal of “future capable” ship’s propulsion is confusing. We have been pressed into a regulatory environment that asks us to reduce emissions, and in the same breath deliver power sufficient to meet commercial schedules and allow the vessel to weather a storm and be safe at sea. To reach that end, owners are presented with a basket of new alternative fuels to achieve the latest January 1, 2023 Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) regulations. Singapore Ranked World's Top Shipping Center

For the sixth year running, Singapore has clinched the top spot among the world's maritime centers in the Xinhua-Baltic International Shipping Centre Development Index.The island city-state in Southeast Asia beat 42 other cities such as Hong Kong, which ranked second, as well as London, which ranked third.Based on the evaluation scores, Singapore shows strength in ship management and shipbroking services, while Hong Kong is benefiting from China’s Belt and Road Initiative and economic opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.London’s first-class services in shipbroking, legal and shipping finance were highlighted.

Restoring the NY-NJ Harbor Estuary

Significant challenges often require a team effort. Restoring the New York-New Jersey Harbor Estuary is one of them. A group of professionals from the Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, joined 200+ scientists, engineers, academics and restoration professionals on June 3, 2014 at a major symposium in Manhattan discussing progress restoring the NY-NJ Harbor Estuary and initiatives to continue improving the area’s ecological health, contributing to the region’s coastal resiliency.

Seagull Debuts Bulker Competence Evaluator

Seagull has released the Bulker Industry Training Standard (BITS), a predefined competence management system for the dry bulk industry. BITS is a computer-based evaluation tool to enhance the competency of officers onboard a ship type whose maintenance, operating and cargo handling practices can be unique. As well as providing a benchmark for industry competence, BITS can be adapted to reflect advanced training standards developed by individual operators. Scania Commended for Climate Change Disclosure

Engine manufacturer Scania is featured in CDP’s “Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index for a second time. This index, a key component of CDP’s annual Nordic 260 Report, highlights the constituent companies within the Nordic stock exchanges which have displayed the most professional approach to corporate governance in respect of climate change disclosure practices. Companies are scored on their climate change disclosure and high scores indicate good internal data management and understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company. The index, compiled by FirstCarbon Solutions on behalf of CDP provides an evaluation tool for institutional investors.

Transocean in Carbon Disclosure Project 2009

Transocean Ltd. (NYSE:RIG) said it has been ranked among the world's top 50 companies in the recently issued Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) 2009 Global 500 Report. For the second consecutive year, Transocean was featured in CDP's "Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index." This index, a key component of CDP's annual Global 500 Report, which represents 475 institutional investors with $55t in assets under management, highlights the constituent companies within the FTSE Global 500 Index which have displayed the most professional approach to corporate governance in respect of climate change disclosure practices. Companies are scored on their climate change disclosure and high scores indicate good internal data management and understanding of climate-change related issues affecting the company.

Alion Wins $31M Navy Contract

Under the five-year contract, Alion will help the NSWCCD expand its Advanced Ship and Submarine Evaluation Tool (ASSET) and enhance the center’s Leading Edge Architecture for Prototyping Systems (LEAPS) software application. NSWCCD, a major component of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is the Navy’s center of excellence for ship design and maritime technology. ASSET software is used to help the Navy evaluate ship design feasibility. LEAPS is an integrated modeling and simulation environment. Subcontractors under Alion include AMSEC, The Columbia Group, BMT Designers & Planners, , ICI Services and Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).
