Perkins Powers New Scottish Ferry Lady of Lismore

Perkins distributor DiPerk Power Solutions has completed the installation of two Perkins M92B engines into Argyll and Bute Council’s passenger ferry, the Lady of Lismore.Built by Mainstay Marine and powered by Perkins marine engines, the Lady of Lismore is a 12-metre ferry, which is ready to transport up to 23 passengers between Scotland’s Port Appin and the Isle of Lismore.DiPerk Power Solutions supplied two M92B marine propulsion engines that have been packaged together with PRM 500D gearboxes to provide a complete offering to Mainstay Marine Solutions in Pembroke Dock…

Grupo Lindley was approached by Administração dos Portos do Douro, Leixões e Viana do Castelo in Portugal to improve the reliability of the aids to navigation in the Douro River. Along this stretch of navigable waters there are many piles that when the river floods become totally submerged.In conjunction with Instituto Hidrográfico (Portuguese Navy), Almarin together with sister company Lindley in Portugal has been working on a topmark that performs as a buoy floating off from the pile in high water.

Op/Ed: Shipping's Energy Challenge

There is no more economically and environmentally efficient way of transporting the world’s goods than by sea. Compared to air or road freight, based on per ton of cargo shipped, shipping’s carbon footprint is small. Yet with the 60,000 or so ships that transport 80 percent of the world’s goods emitting about 1.12bn tons of CO2 each year, almost 4.5 percent of all global greenhouse gas emissions, it is unequivocal that we need a viable way of reducing our environment impact. As other sectors reduce their carbon footprint shipping’s is likely to increase as an overall percentage.

LNG Fuel is Not a Cure-all Solution

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is not a panacea to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and its increasing use as a marine fuel could be worse for the environment than burning heavy fuel oil, said Ian Adams, the former CEO of the International Bunker Industry Association. “Whilst it is well documented that LNG is an excellent solution for reducing SOx and NOx emissions, I am dismayed to see it being promoted as a solution for reducing GHGs,” Adams said, in stark contrast to claims that the use of LNG as a marine fuel can reduce the industry’s CO2 emissions by as much as 75 percent. Kalmar's 18 forklifts for Vix Logistica

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has announced an order from Vix Logistica S.A, Brazil, for 18 heavy forklift trucks. The order consists of eight Kalmar DCF300-12LB, two DCE120-6 and eight DCF200-12LB forklift trucks, adding to Vix Logistica's substantial existing Kalmar fleet of 16 heavy forklift trucks. They will be employed primarily on materials handling applications allied to steel products. The delivery is scheduled for the third quarter of 2015. Vix Logistica is Brazil's leading logistics operator and is currently expanding to meet the growing needs of the industry. The company offers different services including stowing cargo in ships, bonded cargo transportation, port building/cleaning, and cargo handling - all relying heavily on the use of forklifts.

Gilat SatCom System Ordered for a SE Asian Navy

Gilat Satellite Networks Ltd contracted to upgrade undisclosed navy's IP-based satellite communications system. As part of the contract, Gilat will deliver redundant SkyEdge II hubs, RF transmission capability and VSAT terminals that offer increased bandwidth efficiency throughout the Navy units. The increased bandwidth will allow enhanced connectivity to the Internet, video and other high-speed, broadband services while also enabling strategic military communications on board the Navy's mobile vehicles. "Gilat's SkyEdge II solution was selected for its advanced bandwidth utilization capabilities, a crucial commodity for any navy operating on limited and restrictive allocation of bandwidth resources," said Stephane Palomba, Regional VP for Asia, Gilat.

Vector Maritime Announce Satcom Partnership Agreements

Vector Maritime Services has signed a partnership agreement with France Telecom for the provision of all Inmarsat Services including Inmarsat A, B, C, mM and Fleet. “We selected France Telecom because of their reputation for quality and working with their partners to provide the best customer service” said Paul Ashton. At the same time Vector have announced a partnership agreement with Broadband Maritime for the provision of VSAT services to ships. Broadband Maritime provide a global VSAT service for a low all-inclusive flat rate per month.
