DHT Orders Four VLCCs

DHT Holdings announced it has entered into agreements to build four very large crude carriers (VLCC) in South Korea for delivery between April and December 2026.Two of the large tankers will be constructed at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and the other two at Hanwha Ocean (formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering), for an average price of $128.5 million. The contracts include options for an additional four vessels that can be delivered during the first half of 2027.The vessels have been ordered to Super Eco-designs and have carrying capacity of about 320,000 metric tons.

Performance Shipping Orders Two LR2 Tankers

Greek shipowner Performance Shipping Inc. announced it has signed two shipbuilding contracts with China Shipbuilding Trading Co. Ltd. (CSTC) and Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. Canada Clamps Down on Cruise Liners Dumping Sewage

Call for Stricter Regulation of Scrubber Washwater

Golden Ocean Acquires Six Bulk Carriers

Dry bulk shipowner Golden Ocean Group on Monday announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire six 208,000 deadweight tons (dwt) Newcastlemax vessels for a total consideration of $291 million. The newly-acquired vessels—each equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems, or scrubbers—will be chartered back to their former owner, an unrelated third party, for approximately 36 months at an average daily time charter equivalent rate of approximately $21,000 net.Following the acquisition, Golden Ocean will be the world's largest publicly-listed dry bulk company in terms of dwt."This acquisition cements our position as the largest owner of modern Capesize vessels.

Safe Bulkers Lines Up More Scrubber Retrofits

In recent years, Greek shipowner Safe Bulkers has retrofitted Alfa Laval PureSOx exhaust gas cleaning systems on 20 of its bulk carriers. The company has just installed its 21st PureSOx scrubber, and four more retrofits are scheduled through the first half of 2023.Safe Bulkers is expanding the retrofit program for exhaust gas cleaning within its fleet. Having now retrofitted an open-loop PureSOx system on the MV Pelopidas, the company will retrofit equivalent systems on four Capesize bulk carriers: MV Aghia Sofia, MV Lake Despina, MV Maria and MV Michalis H.

Cruise Industry Making Headway Toward Net Zero

Wärtsilä, Maersk Developing Solution to Prevent Scrubber Discharge Pipe Corrosion

The technology group Wärtsilä and Danish ship operator A.P. Moller - Maersk have provided a means for preventing corrosion in scrubber discharge pipes. The permanent in-pipe solution is designed to solve corrosion problems associated with open-loop scrubber washwater discharge.The majority of the estimated 5,000 scrubber systems installed across the global fleet are of open-loop configuration. Wärtsilä and Grimaldi Unveil System to Filter Ocean Microplastics

Wärtsilä and the Grimaldi Group have unveiled a system that uses exhaust gas scrubber washwater to tackle microplastics in the world’s oceans.According to the association Plastic Europe, 368 million tonnes of plastic were produced in 2019 worldwide, and around 3%, or 11.4 million tonnes, of this plastic ultimately ends up in the ocean. To tackle the growing amount of microplastics in the world’s seas, Grimaldi has developed and patented a system that filters out microplastics from open loop scrubber washwater.Wärtsilä, in partnership with the Neapolitan group, will take the microplastics filtration system - which traps plastic particles before the washwater is returned to the ocean - to market.

SFL Buys LR2 Tanker Pair from Frontline

SFL Corporation Ltd. on Monday announced it has agreed to acquire four Aframax LR2 product tankers from tanker shipping company Frontline for an aggregate purchase price of $160 million in combination with long term time charters to a subsidiary of commodity trading and logistics company Trafigura.The vessels are built in 2014 and 2015 and have modern eco-design features including exhaust gas cleaning systems, SFL said.
