Berge Bulk has returned to Yara Marine Technologies for additional in-line scrubbers in a new retrofit deal aiming to help the dry bulk shipowner to reduce emissions from its vessels.Berge Bulk is currently on a journey to zero carbon operations, and Yara Marine has already installed in-line scrubbers on about 30 of its bulk carriers."We have had good experiences using Yara Marine for emissions reduction. Around 360 cruise vessels are operating on the ocean today, transporting thousands of passengers to both new and established locations across the world. The Cruise Boom relishing the industry in recent years has driven growth and advancement with 93 new vessels now under construction showcasing the latest technology available today. Now, the rising popularity of remote and adventurous routes such as the Polar Regions and UNESCO heritage sights has raised concerns about the impacts on marine environments and coastlines. The stakeholders continue to wait for environmental legislation to be set that will determine the green strategies adopted by different operators. Here, we take a brief look at some of the most promising technology available to the cruise industry today.

The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) has raised concerns regarding the possible delay to the adoption of a global limit on fuel oil sulphur emissions, which is to be considered by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in October 2016. The international association, which represents more than 25 member companies dedicated to reducing sulphur oxides (SOx) and particulate emissions from marine exhaust gas, says there is a need for action to prevent SOx emissions from continuing to cause health problems and damage to the environment, and stress that the technology to achieve SOx emissions equal to or even below the regulation limits is already proven, cost effective, and widely available.

Trends in pricing are an obvious factor to consider when examining the feasibility of new fuels, but sustainability and safety also have an impact on the ultimate affordability of change. DNV GL has released a position paper that presents a methodology for evaluating alternative fuels, adding sustainability and safety considerations in the discussion. “The Fuel Trilemma: Next Generation of Marine Fuels” looks at the rapidly diversifying fuel market from the perspective of affordability, sustainability and safety.

Alfa Laval reports its scrubber solution PureSOx has been the subject of many repeat orders. One of the major returning customers is the Grimaldi Group, which has now ordered its 10th installation of Alfa Laval’s exhaust gas cleaning system. The Grimaldi Group is a multinational logistics group specialized in the operation of RoRo vessels, car carriers and ferries. Through the maritime services of Atlantic Container Line, Finnlines and its other companies, the Naples-based group transports passengers, nearly any type of rolling cargo as well as containers and general cargo.

In a move intended to help ease the financial burden on shipowners seeking to install scrubber systems to meet sulphur emissions legislation, Wärtsilä and Clean Marine Energy (Europe) Ltd. (CME) have signed a collaboration agreement that will provide a funding solution to drive the uptake of exhaust gas cleaning technology. The financing solution, similar to those in the building environment space, enables a shipowner to repay the cost of the scrubber system installation via a fuel adder, i.e. a fuel premium on the price of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by which the shipowner repays the cost of installing the scrubber. This provides a return from the differential between HFO and marine gasoil (MGO) for a period of four to six years, depending on price spreads.

Carnival Corporation & plc released the results of its multiyear Fleet Fuel Conservation Program that states by the end of 2014 the cruise company will have saved more than one billion gallons of fuel and reduced fleet carbon emissions by 12 billion kilograms over a seven year period. By the end of 2014, Carnival Corporation's Fleet Fuel Conservation Program will have improved the fleet's overall fuel efficiency by 24 percent compared to 2007, while saving approximately $2.5 billion in fuel costs, the company's single biggest expense.

The Clean Tech Awards are given out by The New Economy, a quarterly publication whose goal is to engender financial investment and encourage discussion and debate of appropriate strategies for the promotion of global economic growth. Algoma Central Corporation has chosen Wärtsilä to supply complete propulsion systems with integrated scrubbers for six Great Lakes vessels. The full propulsion system with integrated fresh water scrubber lowers operating costs while reducing the vessel's environmental footprint by allowing owners to use high sulphur fuels in Emission Control Area (ECA) Zones and meet sulphur emissions restrictions. This represents the first order for the new integrated Wärtsilä scrubber concept.

Wärtsilä has signed a turnkey contract with Containerships Ltd Oy. The agreement covers the retrofitting of a Wärtsilä fresh water scrubber for the vessel Containerships VII, which is equipped with a Wärtsilä W7L64 main engine. This is Wärtsilä's first commercial marine scrubber project for a main engine. The scrubber will be delivered to the customer in August 2011. The conversion will enable the vessel to meet future sulphur oxides (SOx) emission requirements in Sulphur Emission Control Areas.

The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) was launched March 30 to provide a sustainable operating environment within the marine industry for exhaust gas cleaning system technologies. The EGCSA has been formed from companies and organizational divisions that manufacture exhaust gas cleaning systems for the marine sector. The founder companies of the association are Aalborg Industries, Clean Marine, Krystallon, Marine Exhaust Solutions, and Wartsila. Work on reviewing regulations to reduce emissions of air pollutants from ships was high on the agenda when the IMO Sub-Committee on Bulk Liquids and Gases (BLG) met for its 11th session from 16-20 April 2007. It followed on from an intersessional meeting of the BLG Working Group on Air Pollution, which took place from 13 to 17 November 2006, in Oslo, Norway, to develop the necessary MARPOL amendments. The Working Group on Air Pollution was reconvened during the current session, chaired by Mr. Bryan Wood-Thomas (United States), to progress the work in hand.
