EPA Settles Ballast Water Violation Claims

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has settled with two shipping companies over claims of violations of EPA’s Vessel General Permit issued under the Clean Water Act.Under the terms of the settlements, Swire Shipping Pte. Ltd. will pay $137,000 in penalties and MMS Co. Euronav VLCCs Named at Hyundai Samho

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries on January 10 hosted a naming ceremony for a pair of new very large crude carriers (VLCC) it is constructing for Belgian shipowner Euronav.The Cassius and Camus are being built as liquefied natural gas (LNG) ready with the ability to cut CO2 emissions compared to current market standards. Each is also fitted with exhaust gas scrubber technology and a ballast water treatment system.The 299,158 dwt, 238-meter-long Cassius joined the Euronav fleet on January 11, and Camus is still under construction.

Euronav Orders Two Suezmax Tankers from Daehan Shipbuilding

Oil tanker firm Euronav has ordered two Suezmax tankers from South Korea's Daehan Shipbuilding for an undisclosed fee.The vessels will be sister ships to Cedar (2022 -157,310 dwt) and Cypress (2022 – 157,310 dwt), built at the same yard. Both vessels are scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2024. Wärtsilä and Grimaldi Unveil System to Filter Ocean Microplastics

Wärtsilä and the Grimaldi Group have unveiled a system that uses exhaust gas scrubber washwater to tackle microplastics in the world’s oceans.According to the association Plastic Europe, 368 million tonnes of plastic were produced in 2019 worldwide, and around 3%, or 11.4 million tonnes, of this plastic ultimately ends up in the ocean. To tackle the growing amount of microplastics in the world’s seas, Grimaldi has developed and patented a system that filters out microplastics from open loop scrubber washwater.Wärtsilä, in partnership with the Neapolitan group, will take the microplastics filtration system - which traps plastic particles before the washwater is returned to the ocean - to market.

Euronav Orders Two Ammonia-ready VLCCs at Hyundai Samho

Belgium-based Euronav has ordered two very large crude carriers (VLCC) from South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Samho, with an option for a third.The fuel-efficient newbuilds will be liquefied natural gas (LNG)-ready, and Euronav said it is working in cooperation with the yard and classification society to include an Ammonia-ready notation with the potential to reduce CO2 emissions to zero when technology, logistics and the regulatory framework allows for it.The ships will also be fitted with exhaust gas scrubber technology and ballast water treatment systems.Hugo De Stoop…

New Great Lakes Bulk Carrier Delivered to Algoma

Canadian shipping company Algoma Central Corporation announced Monday that it has taken delivery of its new dry bulk carrier Captain Henry Jackman from the Jiangsu Yangzi-Mitsui Shipbuilding Company in China.The vessel is expected to begin trading on the Great Lakes in late June following its transit from China to Canada via the Panama Canal. The voyage is scheduled to commence in mid-April.The Captain Henry Jackman is the fifth Equinox Class gearless dry-bulk carrier and the tenth Equinox Class vessel to join the Algoma fleet. It is also the most efficient.

Euronav Acquires VLCC Newbuild

Belgian tanker owner Euronav said Friday it has entered into an agreement to acquire a resale very large crude carrier (VLCC) for $93 million.The modern eco-tanker is currently under construction at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea and is due for delivery early in the first quarter of 2021, Euronav said.The vessel is identical to a trio of sister ships Euronav acquired last month slated for delivery early in the fourth quarter of 2020 and in January and February 2021 respectively.

Euronav Acquires 3 Newbuild VLCCs

BIMCO Offers Bunker Fuel Price Monitoring

BIMCO has developed a monitoring service for bunker prices, with data provided by MABUX, which is now available to all BIMCO members. The new interactive graphs allow price fluctuations in the major bunkering hubs of Singapore and Rotterdam to be tracked. They will show the bunker prices for 380cST HSFO (high sulphur fuel oil) and MGO LS (marine gas oil low sulfur), both in USD per metric ton, as well as the spread between the two fuel types, with data available since June 2017.

Interlake Orders Great Lakes Newbuild

Valmet to Supply Scrubber Systems to DSME

Finnish technology company Valmet Oyj will supply exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber system) for seven new building container vessels, which will be built in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) for Korean Shipping company Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM).The developer and supplier of technologies, automation systems and services  said in a press release that the building container vessels are the largest in the world, over 23,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) each. The scrubber system deliveries will start in 2019.The scrubber system order was included in Valmet's fourth quarter 2018 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed.Valmet has a long track record in supplying scrubber systems to different vessels types.

Keppel Wins New Marine Contracts

Singaporean conglomerate  Keppel Offshore & Marine said that it has secured new marine contracts with a combined value of S$300 million (USD 220 mln) through its subsidiaries. According to a press release from the company, the first contract is by Keppel Singmarine with Shturman Koshelev LLC for the design and construction of an ice-class LNG bunker vessel. When completed in 4Q 2020, the vessel will be chartered to Gazpromneft Marine Bunker Ltd (Gazpromneft) for operations in the Baltic Sea.
