The Panama Canal is a strategic crossroads for maritime traffic, and is arguably one of the most important maritime developments in the past century. Here we take a deeper dive into the history behind that famous strip of waterway.The present canal, which saw its first vessel transits in 1914, along with possible alternatives through Nicaragua and Mexico, had actually been on the minds of merchants, explorers and military/political strategists since the Age of Exploration in early 1500’s.

Nine Share in US$6-B DoD Contract Modifications

The US Department of Defense informs that nine companies have each been awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity fixed-price option-year two modifications for international ocean and intermodal distribution services (Universal Services Contract-7). Matson Navigation Company Inc., Oakland, California, estimated $9,645,286 (P00034 to HTC711-12-D-W014). The modifications bring the total cumulative face value of the program to $5,932,834,105. Work will be performed worldwide as specified on each individual order, with an expected completion date of Aug. 31, 2015. Type of appropriation is fiscal 2014 and 2015 transportation working capital funds to be obligated on individual task orders. U.S.

Dr. Ilario Hilary Rolih passed away at the age of 82 on February 16, 2014 while on vacation in Cancun, Mexico. Dr. Rolih had more than 58 years’ experience in the marine industry. He was the chairman of the Board at George G. Sharp, Inc. since 1983. He had a Doctor of Naval and Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Trieste in 1956…

U.S. Transport Command Issues Multiple Awards

-  Maersk Line, Ltd., Norfolk, Va., is being awarded a $2,100,000,000 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity fixed-price contract for international ocean and intermodal distribution services. Work will be performed worldwide as specified on each individual order, and is expected to be completed Aug. 31, 2013. Contract funds will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. There were 22 proposals received. Bahrain's ASRY Turns in a Profitable Q1

The Kingdom of Bahrain’s Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard Co (ASRY) has turned in a profitable first quarter of 2012 despite the continued shipping recession and increased competition in the region. As of the beginning of May ASRY was running at close to capacity and had work in hand for the next 12 weeks. This, says CEO Chris Potter, is quite some achievement in a region which already has plenty of repair capacity, even before two major new repair facilities opened for business recently in Qatar and Oman.

MLL Welcomes Aboard 50 Cadets This Summer

Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) and Farrell Lines, a subsidiary of MLL, will provide sailing opportunities this summer to 50 Cadets of U.S. maritime academies. The Cadets will be able to apply classroom lessons at sea while aboard U.S. flag commercial container and roll-on/roll-off vessels. For more than a decade, MLL has contributed to the training of future U.S. Merchant Mariners through its summer sailing program. This program is similar to a traditional internship for college students who want to familiarize themselves with their trade of interest; but these Cadets will live aboard the ships and travel to ports around the world. Cadets will take on various roles and responsibilities, including standing watch, voyage planning and cargo handling, learning from experienced American seafarers.

Farrell Lines 2 Additional U.S. Flag Vessels

Farrell Lines announced the addition of two U.S. flag roll-on, roll-off vessels into its fleet, the Alliance Beaumont and Alliance Charleston. These ships complement the Alliance St. Louis and Alliance Norfolk, which have been U.S. flag vessels since February 2008. The Farrell Lines fleet now consists of four roll-on, roll-off vessels. The Alliance Beaumont was brought under the U.S. flag on February 21 in Dubai, and this vessel will participate in the Maritime Security Program (MSP). The Alliance Charleston was reflagged on February 12 in New York. Both vessels have 710,000 sq ft of total stowage capacity, representing 7,900 car equivalent units and over 250,000 sq ft of deck space for military cargo.

Lowman Helps Less Fortunate In Times Of Crisis

According to the International Hall of Fame Committee, the recipient of the 1999 Humanitarian Award must possess qualities such as contributions to the well being of a broad spectrum of the world population and a demonstration of a rapid response to world humanitarian efforts or appeals in times of emergency. George F. Lowman, chairman and CEO of Farrell Lines more than adequately exemplifies these qualities since becoming chairman of the board with the company in 1978, and chief executive officer isnce 1979. Active on both the East and West Coasts of Africa, Farrell Lines operates major runs of relief supplies in the Black, Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas. It is because of Lowman's generosity that this program continues to run successfully in bringing aid in times of crisis.

McLean Named Man Of The Century; Lowman Earns Humanitarian Award

The Maritime Association of the Port of New York and New Jersey sponsored a tribute to Malcolm P. McLean, founder of Container Shipping and George F. Lowman, chairman and chief executive officer, Farrell Lines at the International Hall of Fame Awards Dinner on the evening of May 12, 1999. Held in the Delegates Dining Room of the United Nations, the gala event honored McLean, who is the founder of Container Shipping as Man of the Century and Lowman, who received the Hall of Fame's premiere Humanitarian Award. Described by Forbes Magazine as "one of the few men who changed the world," McLean founded the trucking company that bears his name in 1934 - which later became one of the largest trucking firms in the U.S.

P&O Nedlloyd To Buy Farrell Lines

It is reported that P&O Nedlloyd reached an agreement to buy U.S. Farrell Lines Inc for an undisclosed sum. No timing was set for the purchase, which is subject to approval by the U.S. Maritime Administration and other agencies. Farrell is a privately-owned U.S. shipping company based in New York City which employs 165 staff. It operates five U.S. flagged container ships in a service between the U.S. East Coast and the Mediterranean. Farrell's services will be upgraded to enable it to link with P&O Nedlloyd's global network to operate weekly service to a number of eastern Mediterranean ports. P&O Nedlloyd is a 50-50 joint venture held by Dutch Koninklijke Nedlloyd Groep NV and Britain's P&O.
