New Book on Ship Stability

Dr. Vadim Belenky, a naval architect in the Simulations and Analysis Branch at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, holds a copy of Contemporary Ideas on Ship Stability: Risk of Capsizing on Jan. 23, 2019. To say this book is a collection of research would be an understatement. “Contemporary Ideas on Ship Stability: Risk of Capsizing” is more like a preservation of knowledge covering the last nine years.Dr. Vadim Belenky, a naval architect in the Simulations and Analysis Branch at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, was the editor in chief for the book, the chapters of which are papers from engineers, naval architects and professors from around the world. Brazil Ship Collision Reveals Offshore Regulatory Gaps

Brazil has more than doubled the number of risky ship-to-ship oil transfers this year, but its monitoring of such offshore maneuvers is lax, to a point where a July 2017 collision between two tankers was not reported, according to a Reuters review of government and shipping records.Transfers are projected to keep rising as the country's deep-water discoveries have lured major companies including Exxon Mobil Corp and Royal Dutch Shell Plc to recent offshore auctions. During these maneuvers, ships pull alongside one another and oil is transferred to a vessel via high-pressure hoses.

Brazil Offshore: Petrobras & Subsea Engineering

Brazil’s Petrobras has been one of the leading players in deepwater, subsea development projects since the turn of the century. These projects include pre-salt and post-salt plays, which require extensive and complex subsea engineering and construction efforts. It would be impossible for Petrobras to develop all of its projects alone, therefore much is done by specialized companies, mostly of foreign origin. “We could not have advanced in this project (pre-salt) conventionally, developing the production individually. We needed a global vision of the projects, starting from a high level plan,” said José Formigli, Petrobras’ Executive Director of E&P, speaking of the primary plan for the development of the pre-salt at the Santos Basin, the Plansal, which was created in 2008.

OSX Appoints New Shipyard Operations Officer

Mr. Danilo Baptista, who currently occupies the position of Executive Manager at OSX´s Açu Shipbuilding Unit (UCN Açu), has been nominated the new Shipyard Operations Officer replacing Mr. Eduardo Costa Vaz Musa. Mr. Baptista is one of the Company’s 52 engineers that have an average of 26 years of experience in naval construction. Mr. Baptista has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and has a specialization degree in Equipment and Maintenance Engineering and Managerial development by the University of São Paulo. Mr. Baptista began his career in 1978 as an Equipment Engineer at Petrobras where he worked for 33 years in the engineering and international areas of the company.

AVEVA Training Partners with Brazilian Schools

AVEVA extends training programs to Brazilian universities in Pará and Pernambuco. Degree programs to include software products from the AVEVA Plant and AVEVA Marine portfolios. AVEVA has announced it will expand its training programs with Brazilian universities. UltraJet UJ575 Powers Diving Vessel Sistac Esperança

Having provided services to the offshore industry since 1995 Sistac Sistemas de Acesso S/A saw the opportunity to provide an offshore dive operation centre and proceeded to commission a new Offshore Dive Support Vessel. Designed by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro this 82 ft aluminum dive support vessel is unique in its design. The aluminum semi-planning hull design matches load capacity to fuel consumption at excellent speed. The load capacity is needed to carry all equipment and fuel on board. The vessel cruises at 11 knots consuming 185 l/h.

Projemar Contracts with Sener

The reference ship and offshore design consultancy in Brazil, Projemar, has entered a license contract with Sener for the use of FORAN. After the implementation of FORAN in its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro, Projemar is conducting an on the job learning process that includes the actual detail design a mineral carrier for a Brazilian shipyard, covering the complete structure and outfitting 3D model and the manufacturing outputs. Projemar joins the Brazilian FORAN users base that includes, among others, the Brazilian Navy Shipyard (AMRJ) and Ship Design Center (CPN) in Rio de Janeiro, the STX shipyard in Niteroi, the Itajaí shipyard and the School of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers in the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

GL to Holds International Ship Stability Workshop

More than 70 experts from the international maritime industry met at Germanischer Lloyd headquarters to discuss the current status of the development and research in ship stability. The two day workshop dealt with the probabilistic assessment of intact stability, showed trends in progressive flooding prediction, presented new cognitions of investigations on severe stability incidents like the MV Estonia and informed about the simulation of parametric rolling. Surf-riding, broaching and capsizing in following/quartering seas, numerical prediction of intact stability as well as probabilistic approach to damage stability and survivability assessment plus intact capsize investigations rounded off the program of 28 presentations.

Transas to Supply Simulator for Brazilian Waterways Training Center

Transas USA has been selected to supply full mission Navigational and Dynamic Positioning Simulator systems to the Waterways Training Center, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The entry was one of eight projects submitted by students from universities around the world. The UFRJ team was honored with a cash prize of $1,500 and the opportunity to present the “Maracanã” floating production/storage and offloading unit (FPSO) to industry at the SNAME Annual Meeting in Boston on Sept. 25-28. “We created this competition to promote the challenging and exciting opportunities in the offshore industry,” said John Filson, Design Competition Coordinator. “Plus it offered the chance to increase awareness of good engineering talent as well as develop closer relationships with industry professionals and academia.” Filson says this first year was successful in terms of the participation level and quality of entries.
