Saga announced it has completed the sale of cruise ship Saga Sapphire to Anex Tour, a family-run Turkish tour operator. The ship is scheduled to reenter service as Blue Sapphire operating for Anex Tour’s new cruise line in 2021.While many cruise ships are currently being sold or scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Saga Sapphire sale is unrelated to COVID-19. Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri hosted a float-out ceremony for a new cruise ship under construction for Carnival Corporation’s Italian brand Costa Cruises. The new ship, Costa Venezia, is Costa’s first ship designed and built specifically for the Chinese market.“As our first ship built specifically for the Chinese market, Costa Venezia marks a new era not just for Costa Cruises and Fincantieri but for the Chinese cruise industry as a whole,” said Mario Zanetti, president of Costa Group Asia.

Carnival Corporation & plc will roll out four new ships in 2018 across four of its 10 global brands, as the company will add 18 new cruise liners to its fleet between 2018 and 2022. Shipbuilder STX France hosted a coin ceremony for MSC Bellissima as well as the cutting of first steel for the MSC Cruises’ first Meraviglia-Plus class ship, representing construction milestones for two of the cruise line’s four new ships simultaneously under construction. The other two vessels, MSC Seaside and MSC Seaview, are currently being built at Fincantieri in Italy. Rolls-Royce is marking another milestone on the journey toward the completion of Britain’s new polar research vessel the RRS Sir David Attenborough being built by Merseyside shipyard Cammell Laird. The last of the vessel’s Bergen B33:45 engines/gensets have been craned into the ship’s hull at Cammell Laird ready to be connected to the RRS Sir David Attenborough’s Rolls-Royce propulsion system. The nine cylinder engines are carefully installed in three separate pieces. The first part of the nine cylinder engine to be craned into place was its double resilient foundation.

Two new ships to be built for company’s Holland America Line and Princess Cruises brands will help meet growing demand for cruise vacations and enhance the fleet. Carnival Corporation & plc announced that it has signed a memorandum of agreement with Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri S.p.A. to build two new cruise ships with final contracts expected to be executed in early 2017. Carnival Corporation & plc the world’s largest cruise company, today announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) to explore the possibility of a joint venture aimed at accelerating the development and growth of the Chinese cruise industry, expected to be one of the largest cruise markets in the world with 4.5 million passengers by 2020, according to the Chinese Ministry of Transport (MOT). Oil and gas—and also mining—are the drivers today propelling Arctic maritime operations and the construction of new vessels able to operate in extreme latitudes. While the gas and oil resources can be recovered in the Arctic or far north and shipped to markets by sea or pipeline, the cost of doing must be balanced upon the global market price for those commodities. Ships and marine structures able to operate in the harsh conditions of the extreme latitudes require special designs and construction techniques.

Construction work begins in Fincantieri's Margher Shipyard on the cruise ship 'Costa Diadema'. Weighing in at 132,500 gross tonnage and with accommodation for a total of 4,947 guests, this will be the biggest Italian-flagged cruise ship afloat. She is the 10th Costa ship built by Fincantieri in Italy since 2000, with a total investment worth almost 5 billion euros. The building and fitting-out, which are due for completion at the end of October 2014, will employ around 3,500 workers and 400 contracted suppliers.

Princess Cruises decide to name new cruise ship 'Regal Princess' as Fincantieri, Monfalcone, Italy lay the keel down. Following a traditional blessing by a priest, the ship's keel – which weighs approximately 500 tons – was moved into position by a huge crane onto the keel blocks. The computer-guided maneuver took only minutes, belying the more than 2 million man hours that will ultimately go into building the vessel. The 3,600-passenger, 141,000-ton ship will remain in the building dock until its float-out next summer. The vessel, a sister ship to Royal Princess, will debut in Spring 2014.

Hartmann Logistiks has taken delivery of the first of 12 AHT from Fincantieri of Italy. The vessel, Atlantis, is the first ship of the Hartmann Group which will be equipped with Amos2 Quality, Maintenance and Procurement. The contract, signed in 2008, represents a major breakthrough for SpecTec on the challenging German market. Atlantis will operate in Egyptian waters on behalf of BP.

The natural progression is underway from installation, design and commissioning of GE gas turbines aboard cruise ships to cooperation with users to further enhance operations. GE is focusing its efforts on optimizing maintenance and improved system reliability, the company reported today at the Seatrade Cruise Shipping Convention. "The use of gas turbines to power cruise ships was long in coming, so it seems fitting that the four years since the world's first gas turbine-powered cruise ship set out on its maiden voyage have gone by quickly," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine. Celebrity Cruises' Millennium is the first cruise ship to use gas turbines.

On May 15 Uljanik Shipyards in Pula will deliver Grande Lagos, built on behalf of Grimaldi-Napoli. The ship will be launched by Mrs. Aldi C. Sekibo, the consort of the Minister of Transports of Nigeria. Grande Lagos is the seventh ship, following up a maxi-order of 11 ships, that was built by the Croatian shipyards Ulajnik in Pula for the Grimaldi – Napoli group. In three years the Uljanik shipyard launched and delivered to the Grimaldi – Napoli group Grande Benelux, and Grande Italia in 2001; Grande Spagna and Grande Portogallo in 2002; Grande Roma and Grande Napoli in 2003.

GE Marine Engines has been supplying integrated propulsion systems for a variety of commercial and military marine customers for more than 25 years. GE's complete line of aeroderivative gas turbines includes the LM500 (6,000 hp), LM1600 (20,000 hp), the LM2500 (33,600 hp), the LM2500+ (40,500 hp) and the LM6000 (57,330 hp). For instance, the first gas turbine-powered fast ferry in Greece entered service in the summer of 2001. This Corsaire 14000-class monohull is powered by two GE LM2500+ gas turbines in a combined diesel and gas turbine (CODAG) arrangement with two diesel engines. The ship was built for operator Maritime Company of Levos (NEL), Piraeus, Greece, by Alstom Leroux Naval Shipyard in France.

The advent of software solutions has infiltrated nearly every sector of the maritime market - from propulsion performance monitoring packages to personnel. It arguably has had no greater impact, though, than in the design and construction of new vessels. CAD/CAM/CAE programs are invaluable assets to the designer, builder and operator of vessels of all sizes and dimensions. Not only do advanced programs allow for the creation of the an efficient and cost effective ship structure and outfitting, they provide for enhanced manufacturing practices and techniques, and increasingly help devise a life-cycle maintenance and care plan which can tack profitable years onto a vessel's life.

Transocean SedcoForex of Houston, Texas, has ordered four Wärtsilä 12V200-generating sets for repowering their Transocean 135D semi-submersible offshore platform. These 2020 kWe generating sets will be delivered in October this year and will be installed while the semi-submersible is on station in Brazil. This is the fifth platform for which Transocean SedcoForex has selected Wärtsilä 200 generating sets. In addition, Fincantieri in Italy has ordered two 12V200 main engines to power the diesel-electric propulsion system of a new multipurpose support vessel contracted by the Italian Navy. These engines have a combined output of 4800 kW at 1500 rev/min.

CAE's marine division has signed contracts with a number of commercial marine customers around the world for a total value of more than $12.5M. In the largest of the contracts, CAE has been selected by Croatia's Brodosplit Shipyard to supply both CAE Damatic(TM) automation systems as well as an integrated navigation system with voyage data recorders and bridge consoles for six P-MAX tankers contracted by STENA. CAE Damatic automation systems enable a single crewman to have full control of all shipboard machinery and equipment. FDGM, Inc., a U.S.-based, wholly owned subsidiary of Fincantieri of Italy, was selected to supply Isotta Fraschini-powered Ship Service Diesel Generators (SSDG) to the Lockheed Martin Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) team. FDGM, Inc. is the supplier of Isotta Fraschini diesel engines in North America. Owned by Fincantieri, Isotta Fraschini specializes in the design and manufacture of specialized, high technology, high powered/lightweight diesel engines particularly for niche markets, including the U.S. Navy, Italian Navy, and international navies, as well as most of today's prominent cruise liners. LCS, a revolutionary naval combatant designed to dominate the world's coastal waters, will provide the U.S.

FDGM, Inc., a U.S.-based, wholly owned subsidiary of Fincantieri of Italy, was selected to repower the United States Coast Guard’s 75-ft. WLR and WLIC class cutters with keel cooled Isotta Fraschini MotoriV1312T2 marine diesel engines. The V1312T2 will replace the current main propulsion plant for the Coast Guard cutters that work in conjunction with 130-ft. barges and primarily serve as aids to navigation. Isotta Fraschini has supplied numerous power plants to the Italian Coast Guard and for other patrol vessels and cutters in other countries. This is the first contract for FDGM/Isotta Fraschini products for the United States Coast Guard.

ABB, a power and automation technology group, signed contracts worth more than $100 million in September to supply Azipod propulsion, power generation and distribution systems for four new vessels, ranging from luxury cruise liners to arctic tankers. Two new cruise vessels, one for Holland America Line and one for Costa Crociere, will be equipped with two 17.6 megawatt (MW) Azipod units each, along with medium-voltage generators, main switchboards, frequency converters, bow thruster motors and transformers. The deliveries are scheduled for 2008 and 2009 by Fincantieri of Italy. Two Arctic shuttle tankers for Russian energy transporter Sovcomflot will be equipped with two 8.5 MW Azipod units.
