Coast Guard to Hold Antiterrorism Exercise
Numerous local, state and federal law enforcement and emergency management agencies will be participating in a full-scale force protection exercise at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, N.J. Tuesday, April 29, 2014, from 9:30-11 a.m. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, this exercise will better prepare its crews and interagency partners in the community to prevent or respond to a terrorist attack at Training Center Cape May. World's First Full Mission Diesel Electric Simulator Launched
RTM STAR Center® (Simulation, Training, Assessment and Research) has installed what it dubs the world's first Full Mission Diesel Electric Simulator. It is referred to as the DE III. The simulator is located at STAR Center's Dania Beach, Fla., facility and is based on a previous design by Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems. This simulator however has enhanced mechanical and electrical systems enabling it to meet the demanding STCW '95 requirements for Class "A" full mission simulation. The simulator is based on a large cruise ship requiring 40 MW of power at 6,600 volts. There are four diesel generator sets each rated at 11 MW connected to two 14 MW synchronous propulsion motors. In addition there are four thrusters (two forward and two aft) and two 600 KW emergency generators.
MC Shipping Buys Three LPG Tankers
MC Shipping Inc., said it bought three vessels from the Komaya Group of. The AP reported that the company plans to fund the purchases with current cash and credit. MC Shipping expects the vessels to add about $10.5 million in revenue during their first full year of operation, as well as about $6.3 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization. MC Shipping will put the tankers on charter with Vitol SA, an oil and gas trading company, for periods of up to three years after delivery in August. The vessels, built between 1995 and 1997, will reduce the overall age the company's fleet and bring the number of tankers under full or partial ownership to 22 of which 18 are LPG carriers. BP Collects Some Oil from Gushing Well
According to a June 6 report from The Wall Street Journal, BP collected 6,077 barrels of oil on Friday, June 4, the first full day after a new containment cap was placed over the deepwater well in the Gulf of Mexico that has been leaking for more than six weeks. The first daily estimate of oil collected indicates that possibly between half and one-third of the oil that is spewing from the BP-owned Macondo well is being captured. Last week, scientists led by the U.S. Geological Survey estimated that between 12,000 and 19,000 barrels a day were gushing into the Gulf, though some scientists have said the rate is likely considerably higher. Teekay Announces Dividend
Teekay Tankers Ltd. announced a cash dividend of $0.70 per share for the quarter ended March 31, 2008. This dividend is payable on May 30, 2008 to all shareholders of record on May 23, 2008. "We are pleased to declare Teekay Tankers' first full quarter dividend since its initial public offering," stated Bjorn Moller, Teekay Tankers' Chief Executive Officer. "Spot tanker freight rates in the second quarter to-date have exceeded the average rates in the first quarter. Coupled with our recent acquisition of two Suezmax tankers in April 2008, we expect to generate more cash available for distribution in the second quarter."
Tidal Energy from Deep and Slow Waters
Deep Green, an underwater kite construction from the Swedish company Minesto, is set to be deployed in 2017 at the Holyhead Deep site off the coast of Anglesey, Wales. Delivering a customized turbine solution in 2016 for the underwater power plant project will be SCHOTTEL HYDRO. And while the turbine complements the first full-scale Deep Green device, 19 more devices are due to follow during the coming three years and will eventually form an array with an overall capacity of 10 MW.
StatoilHydro’s Floating Wind Turbine
The world’s first full-scale floating wind turbine – StatoilHydro’s Hywind pilot – was officially inaugurated in the North Sea, 8 September. StatoilHydro is investing about $57.4m in the project, with Enova providing $9.9m. The latter is a state-owned company which promotes environment-friendly changes to energy production and use in Norway. Hywind comprises a 2.3-megawatt wind turbine installed on a traditional floater of the kind previously used for such applications as production platforms and offshore loading.
Maritrans Reports Good Quarter Results
Maritrans Inc. reports net income for the quarter ended December 31, 2000 of $2.3 million on revenues of $32.2 million. Net income for the year ended December 31, 2000 was $5 million on revenues of $123.7 million. Commenting on the results, Stephen A. Van Dyck, Chairman and CEO, said “The year 2000 was the first full year of operating with a smaller fleet and a reduced shoreside staff. Our lower operating costs reflect this. The results in the second half are more representative of our expectations for the next several quarters. In December 2000, Maritrans 244 went back into service after her successful double hull rebuild.
Coast Guard Establishes Incident Management Assistance Team
The Coast Guard formally established the Incident Management Assistance Team during a ceremony held at Base Portsmouth Thursday morning. The IMAT is the first full-time, national incident management team comprised of 41 active and reserve military and civilian personnel. The IMAT supports the operational commander in complex incident crisis management for all-hazard, all-threat incidents and events. The team is a rapidly deployable, scalable resource that addresses capability gaps within an incident management organization wherever required.
Danaos to Acquire Three Containerships
Danaos Corporation has signed contracts to acquire three 1998 built, 2,200 TEU containerships. These vessels, the Hyundai Progress, the Hyundai Bridge, and the Hyundai Highway were built by Hyundai Heavy Industries. The size of this deal is in the region of $90m and the vessels are expected to be delivered to Danaos on February 11, March 17 and March 18, 2008. The acquisition will be financed by existing credit facilities and own funds. Danaos also announced that subsequent to the acquisition agreement it has arranged ten-year charter agreements for these three vessels with Hyundai Merchant Marine at fixed daily rates which reflect current market conditions. Upon delivery to Danaos, all three vessels will have just concluded their five year dry-docking planned maintenance.
Corvus to Power Hybrid Fish Farm Processing Vessel
Corvus Energy has been selected by Wärtsilä as the supplier of a lithium ion based energy storage system (ESS) for the world’s first full service hybrid fish farm processing and transport vessel. The Orca Energy ESS from Corvus will supply electrical power to the vessel's propulsion system to enable environmentally-friendly and lower cost operations. Wärtsilä has been contracted to deliver the ship design and hybrid propulsion system for the vessel to be built at the Balenciaga shipyard in Spain, on behalf of Hav Line AS of Norway. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in summer 2018.
Danaos Orders Five Containerships
Danaos Corporation (NYSE: DAC) announced that it has ordered five 12,600 TEU containerships. All five Post Panamax containerships will be built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and are expected to be delivered to Danaos gradually starting from January until August of 2011. Danaos has also arranged for a large international liner company to charter all these vessels for 12 years each, at accretive rates. The deal increases Danaos’ contracted fleet to 32 vessels with a total carrying capacity of 217,421 TEU or 150% of its current fleet. ClassNK Amends IGC Code Rules and Guidance
Classification society ClassNK has amended its Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships in response to the latest industry developments, including amendments made to the International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code). IMO decided to carry out the first full review of the IGC Code to reflect the latest technological advancements and increasing ship size. Amendments to the Code were adopted as resolution MSC.370 (93) at the 93rd session of the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 93) held in May 2014.
Casino Cruise Ship Financing Ready
Viva Gaming & Resorts has reported that all financing required for the company's Texas Treasure casino cruise ship project in Corpus Christi, Texas is now fully secured and in place. The Texas Treasure, presently the only casino ship in the state of Texas, will operate twice daily cruises, each five to six hours in duration, seven days per week from Harbour Island, with its inaugural cruise and soft opening set for Friday evening, September 15 as previously announced. "Despite numerous and unexpected delays, we've moved at an extremely fast pace to ensure this project opened on schedule," Viva Gaming President and Chief Executive Officer, Marty Gross said.

Hoegh LNG Partners closed the acquisition of 51% interest in Höegh LNG Colombia Holding, the owner of the entities that own and operate the Höegh Grace on January 3, 2017. The results of the Höegh Grace contributed to the Partnership's earnings for the full first quarter of 2017, says the company. Having closed the acquisition of 51% of the Höegh Grace at the beginning of the quarter, the Partnership has expanded and diversified its fleet to five FSRUs and added Colombia to the growing list of markets utilizing floating storage and regasification units to participate in the global LNG trade.
Kongsberg Lift Simulator Chosen in Montreal
Kongsberg GlobalSim has been awarded a contract with the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) of Montreal, Canada to supply several K-Sim Lift Training Simulators for heavy lift port equipment. The simulator system will include training modules for seven different types of heavy lift equipment, and will feature three different student-training stations to expand the training program in Montreal. “The simulator will be the first step of every training program, for each type of equipment we use in Montreal,” said Sebastien Lambert, MEA’s Training Coordinator.

Shell Launches Phase II of Parque das Conchas, Brazil
Shell announced investment to support phase II of the prolific Parque das Conchas (BC-10) project more than 100 kilometres (62 miles) off the coast of Brazil. This significant investment develops the fourth field in the BC-10 block and continues a successful wave of production growth in Shell’s Upstream Americas business. The full project delivers an energy resource of approximately 300 million barrels of oil equivalent, with production of some 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. “This is another important milestone in our delivery of substantial growth in the Americas," said Marvin Odum, Upstream Americas Director. Shell began production from the first phase of Parque das Conchas in 2009 with production from nine wells in three fields – Abalone, Ostra, and Argonauta B-West.

On April 1, Xantic became the world’s first company to offer the new maritime Inmarsat Fleet 77 service globally. It is also the first provider to have its service commercially approved for global operations by Inmarsat. Crowley Vessels Receive AMVER Awards
Crowley Maritime Corp. announced that 65 of its vessels were recently recognized for participation in the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) program, a computer-based voluntary global ship reporting system used worldwide by search and rescue authorities to arrange for assistance to persons in distress at sea. The awards were given during the U.S. Coast Guard’s NAMEPA Safety at Sea Seminar dinner, an event designed to bring industry and government leaders together each year in Washington D.C. All 65 Crowley vessels were given a certificate of merit for participation, with eight company vessels receiving additional pennants for their continuous, long-term dedication to the program.
Kongsberg Completes Oceanographic Vessel Refit
Kongsberg Maritime has completed the mid-life refit of the hydrographic survey equipment onboard the (Oceanographic Research Vessel) ‘B.I.O Hesperides’. The vessel, originally commissioned in 1991 and based in the Antarctic seas for 6 months a year, was one of the first large survey equipment installations for KONGSBERG. Likewise, this is the first full mid-life refit of survey equipment carried out by the company. The survey package supplied and installed by Kongsberg Maritime was based on the EM120 1°x2° multibeam echosounder. The EM120 is a tried and tested multibeam sounder for deep water mapping with the 12 kHz operating frequency being the optimum choice in order to achieve efficient mapping of larger ocean areas.
