Jack W. Fisher Passes Away at 73

Jack W Fisher

Jack W Fisher, president of JW Fishers Mfg. passed away at home after a brief illness on February 20, 2015. He was 73 years old. The JW Fishers business was started because Fisher, an avid diver, needed an underwater metal detector to use on a salvage project in the mid 1960s. He discovered there was no such device available. Over the next several years he designed and constructed his own underwater metal detector. JW Fishers Mfg. was formed and Jack began building and selling his detectors to other divers.

Damen Delivers Second Oil Tanker to James Fisher Everard

The Damen Double Hull Oil Tanker 8000 Kestrel Fisher was delivered end 2013 to Dutch managers De OpfeartBeheer. In a two-tanker deal, the Kestrel Fisher’s sister vessel King Fisher was delivered in June 2013. Both have been built by Damen Shipyards Bergum. The oil (product) tankers’ names are a reference to James Fisher Everard Ltd., which have taken up their commercial management. The 7,076-deadweight, 8,363-cubic-meter tankers were christened at the DSB-yard in Harlingen where they were outfitted; their hulls were built by Damen Shipyards Galati, Romania.

Henry Takes Helm at James Fisher & Son

James Fisher & Sons plc, the UK marine services provider, this week announced the appointment of Nick Henry (43) as Group Chief Executive with immediate effect following the resignation of Angus Buchanan. Nick Henry joined the company from P&O in February 2003 as Managing Director of James Fisher Tankships. Angus Buchanan has been Group Chief Executive since 2002 and is resigning to enable him to give more time to his family.

JW Fishers inform that Bancroft Global Development is using its side scan sonars to locate and make safe Somalia's harbor in the capital city, Mogadishu, which was heavily mined during the civil war in that country. Somalia’'s Transitional Federal Government (TFG) launched the Mogadishu Port Rehabilitation Project and  assisting in this work is Washington-based Bancroft Global Development, an organization that receives some funding from the United Nations and the US State Department.

Pioneering Tech for Offshore Wind Farm Maintenance

James Fisher Renewables conducted an innovative trial of Ship-to-Turbine (STT), an oil change system set to significantly improve safety, efficiency and reduce down time in offshore wind turbine gearbox oil changes. James Fisher Renewables reports that it has successfully trialed an innovative oil transfer system for the direct extraction and refill of offshore wind gearbox oils from a conventional access vessel, a trial performed on an offshore wind farm off the Norfolk coast.

Operating for over 200 years and with a global office network, Mammoet is a specialist in engineered heavy lifting and multimodal transport solutions. In 2006, following their involvement in the recovery of the sunken Russian nuclear submarine Kursk, they formed Mammoet Salvage B.V., and in recent years that division has experienced substantial growth.

ITF Points Finger at Suspect Indonesian Crewing Agency

The International Transport Federation says it has reported a Taiwanese and an Indonesian crewing agent to Interpol for suspected human trafficking after 74 Indonesian fishers working on board seven Taiwanese vessels were abandoned in September, 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa. It is alleged that the agents withheld the fishers’ wages, in some cases for over a year; produced counterfeit documents relating to crew members’ employment; and charged the fishers [fees] before they boarded the vessel.

ExtremeOcean Innovation Inc. is a marine technology company focused on developing marine solutions for the offshore market.

Sunken Vessel Backs Up Mississippi Traffic

The Mississippi River near the Kentucky-Tennessee border reopened to southbound barge traffic early Thursday (Feb. 17) after the motor vessel Navigator sank Tuesday night and backed up barge traffic, the U.S. Coast Guard said. About 20 southbound tows were awaiting passage when the river was reopened at 8:15 a.m. CST (1415 GMT) Thursday, said Lt. Cmdr. Bruce Fisher, the Coast Guard's chief of port operations in Memphis. "At this point it will take about a day and a half to move that line of vessels," said Fisher. There should be no delay for northbound barges. The river was reopened to northbound traffic Wednesday afternoon and the tows that were awaiting passage had cleared the area by Wednesday night, Fisher said.

USCG Saves Vessel near Provincetown, Massachusetts

A Coast Guard crew from Station Point Allerton, Massachusetts, assisted a disabled clam boat 11 miles northwest of Provincetown, Massachusetts, Friday. At about 8:30 p.m., Thursday, the four-person crew aboard the 40-foot Angel Fisher notified Coast Guard Sector Boston that their boat lost steering. Because of the deteriorating weather, with 5-foot seas and 16-knot winds, the Angel Fisher crew put on their immersion suits. On scene, air temperature was 37 degrees and water temperature was 49 degrees.

Alstom Wins Repeat Order For Cable Layer

The Marine and Offshore division of Alstom Drives & Controls has been awarded a contract by James Fisher & Sons to provide a replacement power management, alarm and monitoring system for installation on the C/S Nexus cable layer. This is the second such order for Alstom from James Fisher, who granted the company a contract in 1993 for the supply and installation of a DPS901 Simplex Dynamic Positioning System onboard the same vessel. The new power management system utilizes the same hardware as the positioning system, complementing the Alstom equipment already in use of the C/S Nexus.

The Dart Fisher, which was berthed in the Fendercare Marine base in Great Yarmouth, is a 26-meter catamaran specifically designed to service the offshore energy industry with the capability to transfer up to 12 engineers, three 20-foot containers with a total combined cargo weight of 30 metric tons.
